A LITTLE BACKSTORY I built the first Speedvagen in 2006. It was a singlespeed cross bike and was my own personal race bike. It had a homemade extended seat mast with a Thomson seat post, carved down to a stub and bonded in place to accommodate my saddle height. I stripped an SLR saddle down to the shell, drilled it out and painted it matte army green along with the frame; the perfect color, I thought, for a homemade hot rod prototype. That first bike wasn t called Speedvagen. Around the shop, for efficiency sake, and maybe because we like to think that we re clever, we tend to take words and smash them together (when I say we, I mean me). The Cross concept bike was affectionately referred to as the croscept. Kind of an unwieldy name, right? Well, I raced that prototype for the season and loved the heck out of the bike s sparse design, light weight and sure footedness. Around this time my wait list for Vanilla was exploding. I was faced with the conflict of not wanting to compromise what I was doing with Vanilla (it was important to me that I be the builder of my bikes and continue to pursue my craft). At the same time I didn t want to be exclusive to the point that I couldn t build bikes for my teammates, the Gentle Lovers, and fellow racers that liked the direction we were going and wanted to go that direction too. That year, 2006, Speedvagen was given a name and a clear direction: a small run of race bikes produced several times a year. The wait would be months, not years. The bikes would be built in-house with the help of A list guest builders and a take away everything non-essential and innovate with what was left design approach. Now, as we enter 2015, we have changed things up a bit. Instead of two big batches a year we are on a rolling monthly schedule. That means you can place your order for a Speedvagen any time of year and expect to receive it within a few months, at the most. They will ship around the world and our family of friends will grow a little better for it. Speedvagen have been piloted by their owners in everything from beginner to pro level races including top tens, podiums and wins at National Championships and International UCI events. In the past eight years, with feedback from our race team and our growing family of SV riders, Speedvagen has been gradually evolving. In the early years, our frames were built using many off-the-shelf tubes; we hashed through making our own seat post heads out of machined stainless steel (if you listen closely, you can hear me pulling my hair out); we built our own seat tubes, we went through version after version of our Berserker Drop-out in R&D, and as I write this it s evolved again to accommodate our new disc offerings. Now in contrast, nearly every tube that we use is custom drawn to our specified size, shape, and thickness; we offer carbon Speedvagen seat post heads, and have a super light carbon seat tube option on our road and cross frames. Small parts like our cable stops, our stainless steel reinforced brake bridges, our head tube reinforcing rings and our down tube adjusters are all of our own design. These may seem like small steps, but the thousands of hours that have gone into researching, designing and fabricating parts and tooling, come together to make a better bicycle. We re looking forward to making this run of Speedvagen the most innovative and meticulously built to date. I hope you are as excited as we are. photo: jeff curtes

NEW FOR 2015 photo: jeff curtes We re excited about some new offerings this year: We re unveiling our road and CX machines with disc brakes. Discs look clean and mean and they re a pleasure to use. The way we re mounting the caliper is unlike any other bike out there. It s stronger and lighter and, well, we re darned proud of it. For paint we ve got a few debuts: we re doing a Choose Your Own Horizon option, where you get to pick, from a larger SV color palette, the color combination for your horizon scheme. This opens up the look of the bike to the creativity and style of our customers, which invites a different result than what you d find if we were dictating the mix. Another new paint option is a color fade in the graphics of the Hollow Text scheme. With a 3 color fade, the scheme is fuller; more complete and fun. Last but not least, is a brand new base level paint scheme that we call Ghost. We want you to ride your Speedvagen, hard! And that can mean a crash from time to time. Our new Crash Repair Program puts your bike at the front of the queue so that you can get back to riding. Find out more about these and other options as you read through the rest of the guidebook!

STANDARD FEATURES SPEEDVAGEN We design the Speedvagen road bikes to be good stage race machines. Here is the best description we can offer: they are comfortable for long days in the saddle and very stable at high speeds. When riding curvy roads, the bike feels better and more fun the faster it goes. Speedvagen are nimble and well balanced while climbing (this comes from how the wheels are laid out under the rider and how that design compliments the fit). The bottom bracket is on the lower side, which gives the rider more agility. This means that you ll be able to take tighter lines than you could on a bike with a higher center of gravity. The tubing is light, but stout enough to inspire confidence. We have the fastest sprinters in Oregon racing our bikes and they have nothing but good stuff to say about the bike s stiffness. At the same time, people also tout the comfort. I guess it sounds too good to be true...but we ll leave that up to you. photo: jeff curtes

STANDARD FEATURES TUBING Our tubing is made up of the strongest alloys from True Temper and Columbus. The stronger the alloy is, the thinner it can be drawn and remain strong. The thinner the tubing, the lighter it is. When you go thin and light, you also need to make the diameter of the tube larger to keep the frame stiff. Look at one of our frames; you ll see larger diameters up at the head tube to deal with the twisting forces and smaller diameter at the seat tube / top tube joint; a place that you want a little cush. The down tube is bi-axially ovalized (fancy words for ovals being oriented at 90 degrees to each other) because you have vertical force up at the head tube and side to side force where the down tube meets the bottom bracket. The seatstays have too much going on to get into, and are crazy difficult to make compared to the stock offerings. They re a big contributor to the inexplicable ride quality of a Speedvagen and that makes it all worth while. Each tube is selected and shaped specifically for its owner and based on the size of the bike. We do this in-house for an even ratio of strength, suppleness and sexualissimo. photo: the vanilla workshop

STANDARD FEATURES BRAKE BRIDGE A typical brake bridge between the seatstays has a painted face where the brake mounts. On every bike in the world, the paint gets squeezed out when the brake is bolted on and that paint eventually falls off of the frame leaving bare metal to rust. We like to use stainless steel in high wear and tear areas and this spot fits the bill. We took cues from our Berzerker dropout with the removable brushed metal face. The inside of the bridge has been machined out, turning the chunk of metal into what is essentially a very light tube. The bridge tapers to a larger diameter where it attaches to the stays, creating a stiffer joint. This results in less flex and better braking. photo: bob huff

STANDARD FEATURES BERZERKER DROPOUTS This new generation of dropout is our lightest and smartest to date. The Berzerker dropout is cast from a super strong steel alloy and incorporates stainless steel inner and outer faces. The use of dual materials means that we get the strength of the base metal and the protection from wear and tear that the raw stainless offers. For the Speedvagen disc system, we ve modified our Berzerker dropout so that the caliper fastens to the underside of the seatstay. Not only is it cleaner than a standard bolt-from-the-top option, but it also transmits the stresses from braking up into the tube, rather than down onto the dropout. We haven t seen it done this way before and we believe it s a worthwhile innovation that will make for a lighter, stronger and visually cleaner machine. photo: bob huff

STANDARD FEATURES INTEGRATED SEATMAST An integrated seatmast makes for beautiful lines. A couple of things that are unique to our bikes: The length of every Speedvagen seatmast is finished specifically for its owner. We use stainless steel around the top of the seat tube where our post head mounts, rather than the post head wearing on a painted surface. The result is lighter, and cleaner, than a traditional seat post and collar and looks great topped off with our ENVE-made Speedvagen post head. Lighten it up with the ENVE carbon fiber seat tube upgrade and you could be defending your machine to the UCI. Though it is often overlooked with an integrated seatmast, there is another benefit, you won t need to buy a seat post. Our frame sets include the custom sized seatmast and saddle assembly saving you $175-$350 on the final build. photo: jeff curtes

POPULAR UPGRADES SPEEDVAGEN CARBON SEATPOST HEAD We ve worked with ENVE Composites to develop a Speedvagen-specific, externally clamping post head. The design has zero setback, 15mm of vertical adjustment and a custom diameter. At 90 grams, it s half the weight of our original design. This item will be painted to match your frame and will feature a 3-dimensional Speedvagen shield on the front. This upgrade is $250. photo: jeff curtes

POPULAR UPGRADES CARBON FIBER SEAT TUBE We developed our carbon fiber seat tube with our friends at ENVE Composites the same way we have worked with our steel vendors. Using the highest quality materials and processes we created a seat tube made to our exact specifications for thickness, stiffness and weight. Offered as an upgrade on the Speedvagen Road and CX Machines, the substitution of carbon for the traditional steel seat tube will cush out the ride and offer a weight savings of between 1/3 and 1/2 pound depending on frame size. This upgrade is $850. photo: bob huff

POPULAR UPGRADES Di2 / EPS INTERNAL WIRING INTEGRATION Half of the bikes we build are designed to be used with Shimano s Di2, Ui2 and Campagnolo EPS electronic groups. This system eliminates standard shift cable routing braze-ons and routes the wires through the frame s tubing, rather than outside of the tube. Integrating the wiring harness into your frame adds considerable fabrication time and proprietary fittings, but the result is visual cleanliness and precise function. This upgrade is $300. This charge is for frame alterations only and does not include wires or wire installation. If you get a di2 or EPS Gruppo, this upgrade will be automatically added to your order. photo: jeff curtes

POPULAR UPGRADES Di2 BATTERY INTEGRATION We ve developed our own integrated battery system which affixes the Shimano battery neatly inside the top of the seatmast under the seat post head. The system is beautifully designed, weatherproof and requires no tools for installation or removal of the battery for charging; it s a pleasure to use. This upgrade is $300. this charge is for frame alteration, materials & battery. If you order the Di2 Battery Integration, you must also get the di2 Routing upgrade. photo: bob huff

POPULAR UPGRADES SPEEDVAGEN DISC BRAKES Disc makes sense. One finger braking even on the steepest decents. Need we say more? Ok, we will: Lighter rims, because the braking surfaces don t need as much reinforcement. This means less weight toward the outside of the wheel, where centripetal force is going to be the strongest and where weight really hurts performance. We ve been dabbling in using disc on our bikes for the last 15 years, and now that a reliable and lightweight hydraulic disc setup is available for road and CX, we re excited to make our disc bikes more broadly available. Our disc brake machines will include internal routing through the down tube, around the PF30BB and out the chainstays. This upgrade is $300 for a full build. This upgrade is $450 for a frame set which includes a custom mixed tapered Chris King headset, installed. a PF30BB adds $150 to the frame set cost. photo: jeff curtes

POPULAR UPGRADES PRO STEALTH EVO BAR / STEM COMBO We have offered the PRO Stealth Evo bar/stem combo as an upgrade option on our road bikes for a few years now. We like them for their shape and stiffness-to-strength ratio. They also look super sharp when painted up to match your frame set, the surface area on the top is a broad canvas for our color integration. This upgrade option, including paint to match your Ghost, HollaText or Horizon scheme, is KIT A: $700, KIT B: $900, and A La Carte: $1100. Overt schemes add $500 to the above pricing. photo: bob huff

PAINT OPTIONS photo: jeff curtes Vanilla Blue PAINT OPTIONS Every two years Sacha puts together a new color palette for the bikes. These colors are shared by all Speedvagen (Road & Cross) from that year. This creates a family of bikes and a cross section of Speedvagen culture and history. Matte Army The three main colors for 2015 are Molteni Orange, Vanilla Blue and our perennial favorite (the color of the original SV) Matte Army Green. Each of these colors work well with minimal graphics, but will also play nicely in a heavier graphics scheme that incorporates all of the colors. In addition to the three frame colors, you have several graphic styles to choose from: Ghost, HollaText, Horizon and Overt. In the following pages we have included photos as well as a description of each graphic style to give you a sense of layout options. Ghost graphics are included in the frame set cost. Each of the other options carries an upcharge to cover the extra time and materials needed to lay out, mix and hand-paint the scheme. Molteni Orange Of course there is also the Surprise Me!* option. Should be tasteful, but that s relative isn t it? Sacha s choice. No hints, no regrets! * please inquire for current Surprise Me! pricing.

GRAPHIC OPTIONS GHOST GHOST At the heart of Speedvagen is minimalism and bombproof-ness. From the very first of these bikes, we ve loved the look of a great color with very few graphics, leaving the frame and the balanced, racy shape of the bike as a whole, to speak for itself. This year, we re unveiling a new paint scheme that we re calling Ghost, named both for the ghostlike nature of the graphics and for the friend whose bike we experimented on to develop our process. Rather than using contrasting colors for branding, our Ghost graphics are three dimensional and painted in the same color as the frame, so the definition comes from the way the light hits the edges, rather than being a different color. Paint is important to us and a beautiful bike is going to make you want to ride more. It s also important to us (and a core value of Speedvagen) that the way your bike looks (specifically fancy paint) doesn t get in the way of you attacking your goals. For this reason, the Ghost scheme and its simplicity is an evolution in the right direction. photos: bob huff & the vanilla workshop

GRAPHIC OPTIONS HOLLA TEXT HOLLA TEXT Everything in our shop is an evolution. Our standard hollow text is/was good, but Sacha wanted to take it one step further. For years we ve been kicking around the idea of color fading in the text, and as is the case with most new ideas, we had a customer that was game to try it out. We fell in love with the result and knew that this was the right next step for the HollaText scheme. The 2015 version has a three color fade as well as some extra line work to make the graphic sections taper off into the main color. There is a $400 upgrade for the HollaText scheme. photos: bob huff

GRAPHIC OPTIONS HORIZON CHOOSE YOUR OWN HORIZON The three levels of striping in the Horizon scheme give us an opportunity to bring together the 2015 colors with some of the quintessential Vanilla Workshop palette. And while it isn t graphics heavy, it is bold and brash and stripe-y, like a race machine ought to be. For us, this blends our original intentions of a minimalist Speedvagen aesthetic (embodied by the Ghost scheme) with our compulsion to bring more color and more fast into our frames. We had a lot of custom requests for Horizon color combinations in 2014 and it was really fun putting different ideas together for customers. So, for 2015, we re going to try something new: Choose Your Own Horizon gives you the opportunity to pick your three Horizon colors from an 11-color palette. Sacha has selected a mix of subdued colors, fruity colors and punchy/sporty colors. What are you going to do? Are you a modernist Gradient type? An all clashing colors everywhere type? This is your new bike; pour yourself into it! We can t wait to see what you come up with! Bottom Color is the foundation of the scheme and includes the bottom bracket, chainstays, and the bottom section of the down tube, seat tube and fork ends. Middle Color is the center stripe through the fork, down tube, seat tube and center of the seat stays. This has typically been where the pop of something bright will come in. Top Color includes the head tube, stem, top tube, seat mast/post head and tops of the seat stays. When choosing this scheme, please pick up to 4 color combinations. We will then create proofs for your approval before painting the bike. One revision is included in the cost of the scheme with additional design consultation billed at an hourly rate of $75. photos: jeff curtes & bob huff There is a $500 upgrade for the Horizon scheme.

GRAPHIC OPTIONS OVERT OVERT In the Overt paint scheme, three stripes (in this year s colors) run down the seatmast and along the center line of the top tube. The stripes also run under the down tube, on the chainstays and down the fork blades, incorporating the Speedvagen logo and shield. This graphic scheme is the raciest by far. There is a $1800 upgrade for the Overt scheme. Colorwork integration for KIT A will add another $400. Colorwork integration for KIT B will add another $750 photos: bob huff

GRAPHIC OPTIONS SUPRISE ME! SURPRISE ME! It was kind of a crazy idea but it worked. Offer a paint option that no one would see until it arrived at their door. At times it would be a complete departure from what had been done before, at other times a freak out of an existing scheme that we had loved. The colors wouldn t necessarily be part of the palette, but maybe they would, and the bike would be recognized as the definition of that year; not meant to be timeless, but a snapshot of that moment of time in The Workshop. Forums buzzed and patience was tested as the wait to reveal it became unbearable. Coveted by friends and forming a bit of a cult among owners, Surprise Me! is everything we love about Speedvagen: irreverent, ballsy and really f@%#ing well done. So what will 2015 bring? Only one way to find out! No hints. No regrets! There is a $1500 upgrade for the 2015 Surprise Me! scheme. this is a sketch of the 2014 CX Surprise Me scheme.

COMPONENT OPTIONS & PHILOSOPHY COMPONENT OPTIONS & PHILOSOPHY Our component offerings are broken into two kit levels: Kit A is comprised of cutting edge, bred-for-racing components (i.e. lots of carbon, tubular tires, etc.) and also includes custom paint integration on our base level paint jobs*. In contrast, Kit B utilizes hand built alloy wheels, alloy bar and stem, clincher tires, etc., making it both race-worthy and a capable workhorse. Within each kit level you ll have a choice of shifter/drivetrain brand and level (i.e. Campagnolo Super Record, Shimano Dura Ace, SRAM Red, etc.). We would prefer to build you a complete bike. It is our experience that the highest level of customization and performance can be obtained when we see your bike through its final test ride. It s during the final build-process that we can tweak the most minute details and dial in the finishing touches, creating a true racing thoroughbred. Many of the components that we ll feature on your bike are from companies who sponsor the Speedvagen Cyclocross race team. We ve chosen them for our team and for you because they are components that offer performance and good value, but most of all because they are companies that we respect for doing things the right way, companies that we can stand behind. PAINTED & POWDERED COMPONENTS The best looking bikes from the last couple of Speedvagen batches have had the frame colors integrated into the components through paint work on the hubs and the stem (or bar/stem combo). We are offering this Component Colorwork on the high-end kit (Kit A) at no extra charge. If you want the components with their standard colors and graphics, no worries. *Note: We re not able to do Component Colorwork on Chris King components and will be using DT Swiss Straight Pull hubs for bikes getting this level of color integration. Color integration on hubs for KIT B is $300. Overt paint scheme color integration with KIT A is $400. Overt paint scheme color integration with KIT B is $750. photo: bob huff

FRAMESET OPTIONS Every Speedvagen frameset includes the frame, an ENVE carbon 2.0 fork and a Ritchey seatpost head with either 8mm or 25mm setback. Each Speedvagen (stock or custom) includes a seatmast sized specifically for you with 15mm of adjustability. STOCK: $3750 Our stock bikes come in increments of 2cm from 48cm to 62cm. If you know your measurements and you re ready to roll, a stock frame is the way to go. We contact each customer individually on the phone to talk about your new bike. When we chat, all you ll need to know is your saddle height, kit, gruppo, and the colors and graphics that you ll want. FULL CUSTOM: $4650 A full custom Speedvagen is where we can really dial in the proportions for the individual and make a bike that will be perfectly balanced for you. Every measurement, cut and angle is made to fit your exact specifications. A custom Speedvagen includes a fit session here at the Workshop with Sacha. The frame is designed from the ground up just for you and not based on any template. Custom measurements and adjustments include top tube length, seat tube length and angle, head tube length and angle, top tube stand over height, fork rake, chainstay length for balance and bottom bracket drop optimized for the type of riding and / or racing you will be doing. Suggested saddle height range is meant to be a guide for determining the correct sized bike. Actual range of saddle height adjustment, once the seat mast length is set, will be about 15mm. Carbon seat tube frames will need a front derailleur clamp that is 28.6 Steel seat tubes on road frames have a braze on front derailleur tab. a 1 1/8 headset and 68mm english bottom bracket is needed for our standard frames. Dropout spacing for our standard frames is 130mm while disc frames have a dropout spacing of 135mm. *Bureau of Awesomeness

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CRASH REPAIR PROGRAM We want to be sure that, whether you re racing at an elite level, doing trans-state gravel adventures, or just shredding with your pals, that you know your Speedvagen is a tool to meet your goals. This means taking your Speedvagen to its limits and, yes, sometimes crashing it. Nicks, scratches and little dents mean that the bike is well loved. Battle scars are reminders of our achievements and a reality of a tool that gets used. Our Crash Repair Program puts your bike at the front of the queue. We ll begin work on it the day it lands in the shop and will be working on it consistently until it is on its way back to your loving arms. To keep the repairs quick and inexpensive, we have a paint scheme that Sacha devised just for the troubled area. This paint scheme is reserved only for crash repairs; a badge of honor bestowed upon those using their SV as intended. This service comes standard with the purchase of a Speedvagen. It s one more way for us to take care of our Speedvagen Family. Note: Labor and materials charges still apply.
