Wildbedryfgroete! Vital decisions on wildlife The 17 th Conference of Parties (Cop17) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites) was recently held in Sandton, South Africa. During this event, delegations from all over the world gathered to discuss issues around the trade in wildlife. Ironically, parties decided on the future of certain species that they do not even have in their own countries, specifically lion, elephant and rhinoceros. A picture did the rounds on social media depicting an African tribe, gathered in a circle in front of some straw huts. The caption read: A meeting was held in Africa to discuss the management of whitetail deer in the US. This picture paints a thousand words... Fortunately, South Africa united as one voice with WRSA (Wildlife Ranching SA), Chasa (Confederation of Hunters Association of SA), Sapa (South African Predator Association) and SAHGCA, under Hawasa (Hunting and Wildlife Associations of South Africa), to convey the message of SA s conservation success story. SADC countries (Southern African Development Community) and ministers from South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe were making Africa s voice heard by holding a CIC (International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation) press conference entitled Keep calm and let Africa speak just a great pity that Botswana was not part thereof. Some good news was that the Cape mountain zebra s appendix was downgraded, allowing the animal to be hunted. This will increase the value of this animal and accordingly wildlife ranchers who have protected and bred with this species will be rewarded for their conservation efforts. Game farming as private-sector conservation as well as sustainable hunting were topics discussed at the 9 th International Wildlife Ranching Symposium held in Namibia recently. Turn to page 108 to read more about the theme of this symposium, Prosperity of rural communities. There is also good news regarding an announcement made at the symposium about buffalo below the red line in Namibia. Game industry greetings! Inderdaad, n merkwaardige man. Andrew Conroy Jan Louis van der Walt blessed us with his life and the example he had set at work for 68 years of his life of 86 years, right to the end. My personal relation with Jan started somewhere in the 1970s, when I first met him at a Vleissentraal meeting in De Aar. He was involved in a controversy about abattoirs with the director, Fanie van Rensburg. I thought I could never like Jan! However, I was wrong In 1981, the South African Agricultural Union (SAAU, now Agri SA) proposed the creation of a national wildlife ranching body. At the time wildlife ranching had provincial entities (Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, and the former Natal and Transvaal), and I chaired the Northern Cape body. The first gathering and gala dinner was held at the ATKV Buffelspoort resort. The menu was extraordinary, featuring game from hippo to puff-adder. Subsequently, the SA Game Ranchers Organisation (Sagro) was formalised, and I became the chairman. Marinus van Dyk was the manager and SAAU provided the funding, with Jan keeping an eye on things. When Marinus moved on, Jan personally took over. Annual congresses were held. The regulation of the industry grew and so did the wildlife industry. It was Sagro s function to direct it and provide the space for growth, which it did. Due to Jan s hard work, the Animal Theft Act was extended in 1991 to include game. This was announced by former Pres PW Botha at a function at the Erfenis Dam. This was the final act to give game ranchers total ownership of their game animals the rest is history. Then came the IWRS Jan broke the news that an International Wildlife Ranching Symposium (IWRS) was being held in Edmonton, Canada; the second after the first one held in New Mexico, USA. We were to make a bid for the next one to take place in South Africa. As usual, Jan had it all together, including generous funding for the event. It was 1990 and Nelson Mandela had been released from jail we would not have been able to make any proposal had he not. So off we went to Edmonton, where we made the bid and, to our great surprise, got it! Now it was time for extensive organising, with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) providing the venue and the congress secretariat. Included in the funding was provision for an international marketing effort. This also included us, and with the assistance of the department of foreign affairs to arrange meetings at embassies and consulates, Jan and I were off New York, Washington, Denver, Las Vegas, Ottawa, San Antonio, London, Edinburgh, Paris, Vienna, Bonn, home. What did we achieve? Well, over 400 delegates, half foreign and reps from over 20 countries! To date this has never been repeated. Spending six weeks together abroad could be a potential recipe for disaster. Yet Jan and I got on like a house on fire! In the process a friend became like a brother, and I rate Jan as one of the best friends I have ever had. With his wife Marie at his side, we spent many a time together on my farm and at their Pretoria home. We even had a wonderful trip together around the UK as far as the Isle of Skye in 2004. After retiring in 1983, Jan had the courage and faith to start a new career thus GAME & HUNT At the celebration luncheon of GAME & HUNT s 20 th year held on 14 November 2014, were Jan van der Walt (right) with Marie next to him, (ltr) Wiaan van der Linde, Andrew and Linda Conroy, and Peter Oberem. 8 GAME & HUNT NOVEMBER 2016

Andrew Conroy receiving an award at the 20 th celebration luncheon from Jan for his support for GAME & HUNT. magazine was born. Only his love of and belief in the game industry could have carried him in its early days. I remember how proud he was when phoning me to tell me that it was a full 200 pages for the first time that was great stuff! For me this final farewell brings both sadness and a wealth of happy memories, including those of the great, friendly home they always shared with their children, grandchildren and friends. All in all Jan has left a great legacy behind his contribution to the game industry lives on as does his magazine in the very capable hands of his son Hennie. n Groot man het groot spore gelaat n Toekenning wat die Konfederasie van Jagtersverenings van SA (Chasa) by die viering van 20 jaar aan oom Jan oorhandig het, was vir hom n groot verrassing.
