AREA INFORMATION Spanish sailor Don Tristan de Luna arrived in Pensacola on Aug. 15, 1559, establishing the first European settlement in the United States. One month later, a hurricane destroyed supplies, eventually causing the Spanish to flee the area. Having been ruled by Spain, France, Britain, the Confederacy and the United States, Pensacola has earned the nickname City of Five Flags. Pensacola was also the original capital of Florida, and it was here (the park where our Crit races around) that Gen. Andrew Jackson changed flags with Spanish Governor, bringing West Florida under the control of the United States. Top Gun air combat simulators, special walk-through exhibits and more than 150 vintage aircraft will amaze you at the National Naval Aviation Museum. Furnished period houses, several museums and one of Florida s oldest churches at Historic Pensacola Village are located in downtown Pensacola near charming shops and eateries. Food on the Beach: Subway (support our sponsor!) Also: Pappa s Pizza - Flounders - The Grand Marlin - Peg Leg Pete s Food downtown Pensacola: Subway (support our sponsor!)
