New England Combat News VOLUME 26 NUMBER 6 NOVEMBER 2014 THE CONTROL LINE COMBAT NEWSLETTER OF NEW ENGLAND Now Celebrating our 26th year of Publication Fall Championships F2D Combat GREG WORNELL, GRZEGORZ POPOWICZ AND BRIAN STAS TAKE THE TROPHY SPOTS SEPTEMBER 21, 2014- HALIFAX, MA Seasonably warm partly sunny weather greeted the six New England combat flyers who assembled, at the Wingbusters club field, for some F2D combat. With two rounds complete two pilots had already been sent home with two losses. Greg Wornell and Brian Stas were at 2-0 while two other pilots were sitting at one win and one loss. In round three Greg Wornell gave Paul Kubek his second loss while Brian Stas was suffering his first loss at the hands of Grzegorz Popowicz. In round four Grzegorz stayed hot giving Greg Wornell his first loss. Greg then rebounded with a win over Brian leaving Brian in third place. This set up a final match between Greg and Grzegorz for the contest win. This match was hotly contested and at the end Greg had squeaked out a narrow victory. Fall Championships F2D Combat (6 contestants) September 21, 2014 Greg Wornell/Wellesley, MA 4-1 Grzegorz Popowicz/New Britain, CT 3-2 Brian Stas/Kingston, MA 2-2 Paul Kubek/Brockton, MA 1-2 Neil Simpson/E. Brookfield, MA 0-2 Chris Sarnowski/Bedford, MA 0-2 Eastern Mass Championships F2D Combat NEIL SIMPSON, GRZEGOR POPOWICZ AND CHRIS SARNOWSKI ARE TOP THREE Story on page three Fall Finale NEIL SIMPSON IS SHOOTOUT WINNER JOE FUSTOLO IS RUNNER-UP OCTOBER 12, 2014- HALIFAX, MA - This year s Fall Finale attracted only four pilots. This prompted a contest day switch from our traditional Formula GX rules to our Shootout rules which are inspired by a rule structure, from the Pacific Northwest, which is the brainchild of Gene Pape. The rules are so simple that the pitmen can judge the event. This is necessary because if you only have four guys two are flying, two are pitting and there is no one left over to judge the event. The event was flown in triple elimination format. The rules should you be interested can be found elsewhere in this issue. The weather was seasonably warm and sunny with a very light breeze. Following three rounds of action Neil Simpson had two wins and one loss while the rest of the field had one win and two losses. In round four Neil got a two cut win over Paul Kubek handing Paul his final loss. In the same round Joe Fustolo got past Brian Stas when Brian couldn t get airborne before the one minute allotted starting time had expired. This set up the finals with Joe having to beat Neil twice. In the first of these matches Joe, who was ahead by a cut, got the win when Neil s machine stopped running, the result of an exploded bladder. In the next match Joe got an early cut followed by some very good action and then a cut by Neil, followed in the same pass, with the removal of Joe s elevator by Neil s propeller. This gave Neil an ugly match win and also the Shootout win in the process. Thank You to the Wingbusters Model Airplane Club for allowing us, yet again, to use their fine facility. Fall Finale - Speed Limit Combat 4 Contestants (all from MA) - 10 matches Neil Simpson-E.Brookfield, MA 4-2 Joe Fustolo-Stoughton, MA 3-3 Brian Stas-Kingston, MA 1-3 Paul Kubek-Brockton, MA 1-3

The top three at the Fall Championships for F2D Combat were Greg Wornell (1st), Grzegorz Popowicz (2nd) and Brian Stas (3rd) Neil Simpson and Joe Fustolo finished one-two in the Speed Limit Shootout at this year s Fall Finale

Eastern Mass Championships F2D Combat NEIL SIMPSON, GRZEGOR POPOWICZAND CHRIS SARNOWSKI TAKE THE TROPHY SPOTS 10-19-14 - HALIFAX, MA The weather was seasonably cool with a strong wind, but still a pretty good day for some F2D combat. Six contestants were on hand for what was the final contest of the 2014 New England F2D season. After two rounds of action two pilots had been sent home, Chris Sarnowski and Brian Stas had one win and one loss while Grzegor Popowicz and Neil Simpson were sitting at two wins and no loses. In round three Neil handed Brian his final loss while Grzegor did likewise in a match with Chris. This left Neil and Grzegor to battle it out for first place with one of them having to lose twice. In the first match Neil got a two cut win in an exciting and well flown match. In the next match each pilot got one cut with Neil squeaking it out with a just a little more airtime than his opponent. For the second contest in a row Brian brought coffee and doughnuts for everyone. Thank you Brian and thank you to the Wingbusters for the use of their fine facility. At day s end Grzegor, as he did last F2d meet, sent everyone home with some Polish beer. Good guys in our group, great fun. Eastern Mass Championships F2D Combat (6 contestants) October 19, 2014 Neil Simpson/E. Brookfield, MA 5-0 Grzegor Popowicz/New Britain, CT 3-2 Chris Sarnowski/Bedford, MA 1-2 won coin flip Brian Stas/Kingston, MA 1-2 lost coin flip Paul Kubek/Brockton, MA 0-2 The top three were Neil Simpson (1st), Grzegor Popowiczs (2nd) and Chris Sarnowski (3rd)

Shootout Rules These rules, minus a few tweaks, were conceived by Gene Pape. Gene may or may not approve of the tweaks, however, in the interest of giving credit, where credit is due, Gene is the gentleman who is the inspiration behind this concept. Each match will have a 1 minute staring period where the pilot will start his own engine, get to the pilots circle, and be ready for his plane to be launched. At the end of that one minute period, pilots not ready to launch will forfeit the round. If both pilots are ready to launch, the signal to start will be given. Both planes will be launched from 180 degrees apart, and combat will begin immediately for a 3 minute match period. The match will be scored with 1 point for the first cut, 2 points for the second cut and 3 points for each additional cut. The first string cut counts. In the event 1 airplane crashes, or lands for any other reason before the end of the 3 minute period, the other will win the match. If both pilots land before the end of the 3 minute period both forfeit the round. Ties will be re-flown. Can be flown single, double or triple elimination
