ONE-ONE-1 "THE " ACT 1 SCENE 1 (There is only one live actor, The Circus Queen and she is a flamboyant Ringleader with a French accent. The other characters; The Young Girl (Circus Queen as young Girl), Ella, Sarah, and The Lazy Lion are all animated characters and appear on a large video screen on stage during the show.) (Stage right or center depending on the theater is a large screen with video projection of titles, credits and story animation. Stage left is a table 6'X2' with various props. Center stage is a single chair and a magic prop stand. A spotlight is on center stage and there should be no lights stage right that might wash out the video screen. Stage left is well lit. The curtain opens with the Circus Queen center stage raising both hands up holding a book in one.) Slide #1 is already playing a loop of Circus Music as an intro while the audience is arriving. Slide #2 (Forward the remote to next slide that plays the drum roll sound effects.) (DRUM ROLL SOUND EFFECTS BUILDING TO CRESCENDO) Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, bow-legged monkeys and lions with curls. I come before you to tell you a story of which I know a little about. For in this book is a tale of wonder, pages of glory and total blunder. So, watch as I make this story come alive right before... wow uh wow. (Circus Queen opens the book and the book catches fire.) (Continued) Uh, boys and girls it looks as though I have burnt up my book up. My magic doesn't always work. Oh dear. Wait, it is all right. I know the story by heart. Just watch the big screen and I will make the story come alive right before your very eyes.
ONE-ONE-2 Slide #3 (Forward the remote to the next slide. This movie will show a boat in a storm and baby lost at sea.) (Continued) Long ago there was a ship at sea and aboard the ship was a mother to be. And did I mention a storm too that tossed the ship and blew and blew. (Be sure to forward the remote to mirror the text that matches the Circus Queen's poem throughout the remainder of the show.) (Continued) In all this hapless mess, a baby was born and the ship was wrecked. Hey look there she is. It's the baby. Say,"Hello baby." (The Circus Queen switches back and forth between facing the video screen and the audience as he engages on-screen characters and addresses the audience for the rest of the show.) Hello baby. Baby be careful. It is dangerous in the storm. This is no place for a little one. Oh wait! There she goes. Say, "Bye baby." (The baby in the animation moves off screen stage right.) Bye baby. Oh! I hope she is all right. Let's go see. Slide #4 (Forward remote to the animation of baby washing up on the beach and a monkey playing a bassoon.) (Continued) Hey, look at the monkey. As chance would have it and none too soon, the GIRL was found by a big baboon who played upon a little bassoon and danced while tooting a quirky tune. Say, "Hello monkey." Hello Monkey!
ONE-ONE-3 Slide #5 (Forward remote to the animation of the monkey holding the baby) Look how sweet the monkey is. I am glad he is so nice. The monkey carried the GIRL away to his home by a blue quiet bay. Let's go see where the monkey lives. Slide #6 (Forward remote to the animation of the monkey walking away towards the circus. (Continued) Where circus animals roll in the hay and circus actors come to play. Uh oh! Hey, tell the monkey to put on some pants. Monkey, put on some pants. Oh, the monkey does not know any better. Let's go see who is at the circus. Would you like to go to the circus with me? Yes! Slide #7 (Forward remote to the animation of the lion sleeping.) There is Lazy Lion with curlers in his hair, slippers on his feet, wearing a bathrobe there. Hey, Lion wake up! We have to do the show. Tell the Lion to wake up. Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! Never mind him. Let's see who else is there. Slide #8 (Forward remote to the animation of clown trying to juggle upside down.) (Continued) And a crazy clown going round and round, trying to juggle upside down. Tell him to catch the ball. Catch the ball.
ONE-ONE-4 This is terrible. Catch the ball! Catch the ball. Slide #9 (Forward remote to the animation of acrobats.) And twin crossed eyed acrobats flying through the air colliding and crashing without a care. Look out! Watch it! You have to catch him. Tell him to catch him. Catch him! Catch him! Catch him! This circus is a disaster! Let's see who else is there. Slide #10 (Forward remote to the animation of Ella the Elephant.) (Continued) And there was Ella the Elephant with such bad allergies when she tried to sing she could only sneeze. Cover you nose. (Ella sneezes) (Continued) Oh god bless you. Uh no not again. Tell her to cover her nose! Cover your nose. Achoo! God bless you. Slide #11 (Forward remote to animation of the Sarah the Seal. (Continued) And Sarah the Seal who was so big and fat she couldn't clap so there she sat. Hey, would you like to meet Sarah for real?
ONE-ONE-5 Yes. Great! But I must tell you that Sarah is incredibly talented. She can balance a ball on the tip of her nose. It is not as easy as you think. If one of you can balance this ball on the tip of your nose, then I will give you a big bag of candy. Who would like to try? (The Circus Queen selects several audience members to try. As each child tries to balance the ball, he gets the audience to bark like a seal and clap. No child has ever been able to balance the ball on their nose. But a bag of candy awaits just in case.) (Continued) Ah! Give them a hand for trying. It's all right. Let's just let Sarah show us. But, before I get her to come out, I must make something for her to eat. It's a fish dish. You like a fish? NO! No, It's good huh! You like fish ice-cream? NO! It's so good! You should try it. Well anyway I am going to make her favorite fish dish. It's called fish flambeau. This means fish from fire. But, I need your help. When I say 1,2,3, you must say, "Zoop, Zoop, Zoop." Can you do this for me? (The Circus Queen places fire pan on magic podium center stage then pours lighter fluid into the pan while speaking the above lines. He ignites the lighter fluid. As the fire is flickering he runs around the back of the table and grabs the fire pan's lid and places it on the fire. The fire goes out.) 1,2,3 Zoop, Zoop, Zoop! (Continued)
ONE-ONE-6 Zoop, Zoop, Zoop! No! No! No! Ah poop, poop, poop! You have to say it with more feeling! Say it like you mean it. 1,2,3 ZOOP, ZOOP, ZOOP! (The Circus Queen lifts the pan lid and a rabbit appears where the fire once was.) Ah, this is a disaster! This is not a fish. Does this look like a fish to you? What is it? It's a rabbit! Of course it's a rabbit. This is horrible. I have been tricked by the rabbit again. He is trying to ruin me. During every show, he comes out when he is not suppose to. Look, you have to help me. I am going to put the rabbit away in this bucket and you keep an eye on the bucket and do not let him out. (The Circus Queen places the rabbit in the bunny bucket while talking. The rabbit will keep sticking his head out of the bucket until the Circus Queen hurriedly shuts and fastens the lid.) Say, "Bye, bye rabbit!" Bye rabbit! (Continued) No! Get in the bucket rabbit. No! No! I said get in the bucket. Get in! (The Circus Queen places the bucket stage right in front of the audience. While speaking the following lines she looks into the audience members eyes in the front row selecting a few members.)
ONE-ONE-7 (Continued) Now you guys have to make sure the rabbit does not get out or he will ruin my show. OK! Let's get Sarah to come out. Oh, but we need a fish. Everyone say,"fish!" Fish! (The Circus Queen goes behind the table on stage looking for the fish.) Ah, there you are. (He places the fish on to the magic podium.) (Continued) Now every one call out Sarah's name. Sarah! Sarah! Come on louder. SARAH! Slide #12 (Use the remote to advance to the animation of Sarah the Seal coming out.) There you are Sarah. Come on out. We want to see you do your act. SARAH No I don't want to come out. But why? They want to see you do your act. Come on. I'm too fat! SARAH
ONE-ONE-8 No! No! You are not. You are pleasantly plump as a seal should be. SARAH No! I am too fat! I am so fat that I cannot clap. I can't even perform my act. No! Sarah. It's all right. I have a fish for you. Hum... SARAH Come on. It's great. You won't believe it. SARAH Well maybe for a fish! Is it a chocolate fish? No. But close enough. OK. Help me please. SARAH Scoot over. I am coming in to get you. 1,2,3.. Zoop! Zoop! Zoop! (The Circus Queen jumps behind the video screen and appears as an animated character on screen. During a fireworks transition, the Circus Queen jumps back out of the screen with Sarah the puppet. Both Sarah and the Circus Queen have now disappeared off the video screen and appeared on stage. During the following lines, the Circus Queen interacts with the puppet.) Wow! Say, "Hi Sarah." Hi, Sarah. (Continued) You are so beautiful in real life. Look at her big blue eyes and soft soft fur. So shiny and so plump and loveable. Don't you think she is beautiful.
ONE-ONE-9 Yes! She is lovely. The most beautiful seal I have ever seen. SARAH Beautiful. Why no. See, I am so fat that I can't even clap. Wait. Does this outfit make me look fat or is it just me? Oh Sarah! No. Look, you have to be comfortable with who are. Hey, does this outfit make me look like I have black hair? No. We are what we are. You are plump so the other seals will love you and so you can stay warm during the winter. SARAH Uh can I have my fish now? No wait Sarah. The kids want to see you do your act. Can you do it for us. OK! SARAH (The Circus Queen places the magnetic ball on Sarah's nose and she balances it perfectly.) Now everyone help her clap. When she barks, start making the barking sound of a seal like this, "Arf, Arf." Slide #14 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide which plays the musical selection Strauss's "Blue Danube Waltz.") (Audience members join in clapping on beats 3 and 4 of the waltz and barking like a seal as the Circus Queen dances with Sarah across the stage.) (Continued) Give her a big hand everyone. That was incredible. It was so beautiful. I can hardly speak. Sarah you are the most beautiful seal in the world. SARAH Thank you, Thank you. I will always remember you, and you, and you, and you and... maybe not you. (Sarah bows her head to various children in the audience until she )
ONE-ONE-10 (reaches an adult and says "Maybe not you!") Oh Sarah. That is terrible. Don't be so rude. (The Circus Queen faces the adult and apologizes.) (Continued) I am so sorry madame. She is just learning her manners. Every one say, "Bye bye Sarah. Bye, Bye. Sarah, I cannot believe how rude you are. (The Circus Queen takes Sarah behind the table on stage still admonishing her below the audience's line of sight.) (Continued) Look, you cannot insult the audience like this. These people pay our bills. (The Circus Queen looks up from behind the table as if caught in the act.) (Continued) Never mind. Just say, "Au revoir everyone." "Au revoir everyone." "Au revoir everyone." SARAH (The Circus Queen addresses the audience member that Sarah has just insulted.) I am so sorry madame. She is still learning her manners. Never mind this. Let's just go on with the story. Slide #15 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide. It will play an animation of the GIRL sitting and scratching his head.)
ONE-ONE-11 (Continued) Now every day the Girl would watch the circus play and wonder why no one would come their way. No crowds would ever come to see that crazy circus by the sea. This is no good. A circus without a crowd is not a circus at all. Slide #16 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing the animation of the GIRL speaking and stuttering.) (Continued) As the Girl grew she found he couldn't speak. She stuttered and stammered the words caught in her cheek. Speak GIRL. Speak. G-G-G-Good morning Ella. GIRL No not, "G-G-G-Good but say, "Good morning Ella." G-G-G-Good morning Ella. GIRL No not, "G-G-G-Good but say "Good morning Ella." You can do it. G-G-G-Good morning Ella. GIRL No. No not, "G-G-G-Good but say, "Good morning Ella." Come on. You can do it. G-G-G-Good morning Ella. GIRL Oh don't worry GIRL you will get it. All you need to do is practice. Tell her, "It will be all right." It will be all right. And by the time she was ten she just wanted to be an actor in this crazy circus by the sea. But what to do she did not know. She just wanted to be part of the show. Slide #17 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing the animation of the clown trying to juggle upside down.)
ONE-ONE-12 (Continued) So she went to the clown who wore a frown so sad he couldn't juggle up side down. And the GIRL suggested... GIRL Why don't you use your feet? Slide #18 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing the animation of the clown asleep juggling ducks with his feet.) And with that the clown found he could do it even in his sleep. Look at that! Give the clown a big round of applause. Slide #19 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing the animation of the GIRL trying to juggle standing up.) (Continued) But when the GIRL tried to juggle with the clown, she found she couldn't do it right side up or... Slide #20 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing the animation of the GIRL trying to juggle upside down.) (Continued) up side down. Tell her to catch the ball. Ah it's all right. Slide #21 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing the animation of the empty stage.) (Continued) You know all my life I have tried to juggle but found I could not. I am so clumsy. But the other day I went to the juggling store and the man there sold me a tool to teach me to juggle. But he said I was so bad that I would need an assistant. Someone with magic in their hands. Who can help me? (The Circus Queen selects an audience member to come up to the stage and places a clown hat upon their head. After soliciting applause for the child for coming up, she moves the juggling magic trick from the table to the magic podium center stage.)
ONE-ONE-13 (Continued) Now the man told me that there are two rules to juggling. The first rule is: never let the balls hit the ground. Can you do that for me? (The Circus Queen ask the GIRL.) Yes! CHILD ASSITANT FOR JUGGLING Excellent! The next rule is: Always remember the order of the balls. You see the first ball is green, the next one is yellow and the last one is red. (The Circus Queen points to each color painted on the cylinder of the juggling magic trick. Then she addresses the audience.) (Continued) Now everyone this will be your job. So let's go over it again. The first ball is the... Green one Then the... Yellow one And the last ball is? Red. Great! (The Circus Queen speaks to the child assistant.) (Continued) So first you give me the... The green one. Then the..
ONE-ONE-14 Yellow Then? The red one. (The Circus Queen places each ball in the tube in the order specified as the child assistant hands them to him.) Now everyone put your hands in the air and say the magic words: Zoop, Zoop Zoop on the count of three. 1,2,3... Zoop, Zoop, Zoop! (The Circus Queen removes the black cylinder cover to reveal a clear tube. The balls that were placed in the cylinder are out of order. The red ball is on the bottom. The yellow ball is in the middle and the green ball is on top. The Circus Queen does not notice.) And as you can see the order of the balls is perfect. The green ball is on the bottom, the yellow ball is in the middle and the red one is on top. No! No the red one is on the bottom! What? Oh no what have you done? You have played a little trick on me! Eh? You are very good! Give the Boy/Girl a big hand everyone. This is incredible. Look, you just keep the balls off the ground huh. Let me do the magic. Ok. Let's just try this again. (The Circus Queen lifts the tube and clumsily let's the balls fall to the ground forcing the child to pick them up. The sequence is repeated with the same results. The balls are put in order but when revealed the order has changed.)
ONE-ONE-15 (Continued) Not again. Look you need to get your own show. You are so good! What a great magician. Give him another round of applause. Ok! That's it. I am going to do a little magic of my own. I am going to get rid of that pesky red ball. Give me the red one. I am going to place the red ball into the magic box and make it disappear. (The Circus Queen, after removing the tubes, places a magic box on the magic podium. She puts the red ball in the box.) (Continued) On the count of three everyone say the magic words. 1,2,3... Zoop, Zoop, Zoop! (She opens the box and shows that the red ball is gone. She removes the magic box and replaces the tubes onto the magic podium.) Ok! Now we got it. No red ball means no problem. Ok, which one goes in first? The green one. Next? The yellow one. And finally we have it. The green ball is on the bottom and the yellow one is on top and the red one is gone... (The Circus Queen removes the black cylinder to reveal the red one has appeared again and the sequence is once again out of order. The Circus Queen appears not to notice. The audience is yelling at her telling her the balls are out of sequence.) No! No! The red one is back.
ONE-ONE-16 Ah what? No not again. You have tricked me for the third time. You are amazing! You have to come join my circus. Never have I seen such a great magician. Give this Girl/Boy a big hand! Take a bow little one. (The audience applauds and the GIRL takes a bow.) (Continued) Let us go on with the story. Slide #22 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide to the animation of the Lazy Lion sleeping and the lion tamer cracking his whip.) (Continued) Next, the GIRL came to the Lazy Lion. And saw the lion tamer really trying to make that lion jump through a hoop. But the lion just slept and his eyes drooped. So the GIRL recommended.. GIRL Why don't you use a feather instead of a whip? Slide #23 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide with the animation of the Lion Tamer using a feather to tickle the lion.) And with that, the lion did a front hand spring, round off and a back flip. Give the Lion a big hand everyone. Applause. Slide #24 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing the animation of an empty stage.) Would you like to meet the Lazy Lion for real? Yes! (The Circus Queen places an empty circus wagon on the magic podium.) Ok! This is going to be great. On the count of three everyone say the magic words. 1,2,3... Zoop, Zoop, Zoop!
ONE-ONE-17 (The Circus Queen does a flourish with her hands but the Lion does not appear.) Is the lion there? No! Oh, this is not good! Eh? You have to say the magic words as loud as you can. Let's try it again. 1,2,3.. Zoop, Zoop, Zoop! (The lion does not appear again.) Do you see him now? What? Is he there? NO! (The Circus Queen looks puzzled but then an idea comes to her.) Ah! I forgot. The Lazy Lion will only come out if we sing his favorite song. I know you know it. I will give you some instruments to play and you just sing along. Slide #25 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing the music "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".) (The Circus Queen sings "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and hands out percussion instruments to the audience to play along. As she finishes the song, she returns to the empty circus wagon that's center stage.) (We-de-de-de) (De-de-de-de-de) (De-we-um-um-a-way) (We-de-de-de) (Continued)

(The rabbit appears in the box.) (Continued) It's the rabbit. It's not the lion! What? It's the rabbit! Does this look like a lion to you? It's the rabbit. Who let the rabbit out? I told you to keep an eye on the bucket and don't let the rabbit out. Who? Who? Who let the rabbit out? (Mimicking the song, "Who let the dogs out" the Circus Queen dances across the stage. Then she addresses audience members in the front row.) (Continued) Look. Did you let him out? Did you? Eh? I told you not to let him out. Ah, it's all right. The rabbit has played another trick one me. (The Circus Queen opens the bucket to reveal the rabbit has escaped.) (Continued) He has been ruining my show all week. I cannot stand it. This circus is a disaster! Forget it! Let's just go on with the story.
ONE-ONE-21 Slide #26 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide that plays the animation of Ella the Elephant sneezing.) (Continued) Next, the GIRL came to Ella the Elephant with such bad allergies, when she tried to sing she could only sneeze. Tell her to hold her nose. Hold your nose. (Ella sneezes on screen.) Oh, God bless you Ella. Look Ella we want you to come out and sing. Will you come out? Slide #27 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing the animation of Ella the Elephant's dialog.) What? I don t think so! I m miserable. I can t even finish my song. All I ever do is ah ah ah ah choo.. sneeze! God bless you. Oh come on Ella. They want to hear you sing your song! Oh, I don t know. Come on! Kids shout her name. Ella! I just don t know. Say again. Ella! Ella! Oh, OK. I guess I can. If you don t mind my sneezes. No it's ok. I don't mind. Move over. I am coming into get you.

You can't sneeze on everyone like that. What are you doing? What are you allergic to? Maybe we can help you. Oh, I'm still miserable. I'm allergic to everything. Everything? Like what? Grass, fleas and bumble-bees, air, water and even trees. Flowers that bloom and thunder that booms and even to sweet little singing tunes. Why I'm even allergic to tennis shoes, flip flops and kids... kids too! Achoo... God bless you Ella. Maybe if we just sing the song it will make you stop. Let's try it. Ok. (Ella and the Circus Queen sing a duet to the tune of "Pop Goes The Weasel." Ella continues to sneeze on the audience during the song.) Well, she is Ella the Elephant and she sings in the circus but every time she tries to sing she spurts out the mucus.
ONE-ONE-23 You see I have really bad allergies and every time I sing I sneeze. Oh please! Oh Please! Oh please... don't let me...achoo.. Sneeze. (The following is spoken while the music is played.) God bless you Ella. Thank you. What we are going to do? I don't know. (Ella and the Circus Queen return to singing.) (Continued) You see I am Ella the Elephant and I sing in the circus but every time I try to sing it drives me bazurkus. I've tried everything I know to do but nothing seems to work. I'm through. oh boo oho... achooo (Ella sneezes on the audience.) (The following is spoken while the music is playing.) Oh dear! What do we do? I don't know. How about I pinch you here? (The Circus Queen pinches her leg.) Ouch! How about I squeeze your nose? Ouch!
ONE-ONE-24 How about I tickle you? Giggle. Giggle. Oh nothing works. I'm through. (Ella and the Circus Queen sing at the same time the following lines.) (Continued) You see I am Ella the Elephant and I sing in the circus but every time I try to sing it drives me bazurkus. I've tried everything I know to do but nothing seems to work. I'm through. Oh boo oho... Achoo... (Ella sneezes on the audience.) Well, she is Ella the Elephant and she sings in the circus but every time she tries to sing she spurts out the mucus. She's tried everything she knows to do but nothing seems to work. Oh dear she's through. What do we do? (The Circus Queen backs up moving towards back stage to put Ella behind the table.) (Continued) Ella you can't sneeze all over everyone like that. Look it's pandemonium out there. The audience is going crazy. You could be a big star but you have to control the sneezes. A big star? You think I could be a big star? (Ella pops her head up from behind the table) (Continued) I could be a really big star? (The Circus Queen pulls her down out of sight of the audience. She is hiding behind the table admonishing her.) Yes, but you can't sneeze all over everyone. These people pay our bills. You have to.. (The Circus Queen pops her head up from behind the table in embarrassment.)
ONE-ONE-25 (Continued) Give her a big hand everyone. Applause. Every one say, "Bye, bye Ella. Bye, bye. Bye, bye. This is terrible. What a disaster. Oh, let's just go on with our story. Slide #28 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing to the text showing the text below.) (Continued) So the GIRL tried to sing like Ella but found she could not. Slide #29 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing the animation of the GIRL trying to sing.) GIRL All around the mulberry bush the monkey chased the weasel.. Duh. It's alright GIRL. Tell her, "It's all right." It's all right. Not everyone can sing GIRL. We are all good at different things. Some of us can run or throw a ball and others can make music. You just have to find what you are good at. You must persevere. Keep trying. Don't give up. We'll help you. Let's go on with the story. Slide #30 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing the animation of the GIRL growing up and the music "Happy Birthday.) (Continued) Days pass and turn to years and the Girl's hopes became her fears. Say, "Happy Birthday GIRL."
ONE-ONE-26 Happy Birthday GIRL. Slide #31 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing the animation of the GIRL saying, "I'll never fit in.") You see the harder she tried the less she could do. She said,... "I'll never fit in." GIRL She just knew. It's all right GIRL. Do you remember that word I said, persevere? You have to keep trying. Tell her it will be all right. You just have to persevere. It will be all right. You have to persevere. Slide #32 (Use the remote to advance to the next slide playing the animation of the GIRL running away.) Ah, look she is running away. Oh no GIRL don't go. Tell her, "Don't go." Don't go. Look, boys and Girls never run away from your problems. They just follow you every where you go. She is leaving the very people who love her the most. Ah well. (Continued) Now each child will get a chance to do a solo. But you guys in the audience have to help me out. Whenever I say, "Hey now." You have to shout it back. Let's try it. Hey now. Hey now.
