Name: ENVIRONMENTAL INJURIES & SICKNESSES The human body maintains a temperature of about 37 C or 98.6 F. The body does two things to adjust to the environment and maintain a normal temperature. Can you name these two things? S v _ g: - helps make and keep body heat when it is cold. S w t _: - helps to cool the body when it is hot. BUT when the body is exposed to extreme cold or hot temperatures, these things may break down causing cold or heat injuries or sicknesses. COLD INJURIES/SICKNESSES are F b _: - local freezing of skin. H _ t h a: - a general cooling of the body. FROSTBITE: What the First Aider will see: 1. - white skin and waxy-looking 2. - skin is firm to touch, soft underneath appropriately - feel pain at first, followed by numbness 3. - white skin turns greyish-blue - skin feels cold and hard - there is no feeling in the area HYPOTHERMIA: What the First Aider will see: 1. - the patient is shivering 2. - the patient is not thinking right - becomes confused or sleepy - the muscles get stiff and jerky - the patient may lose consciousness 3. - the patient may lose Consciousness What the First Aider will do: 1. - cover the area with warm hands - tell the patient to get to a warm place 2. - stop the activity or dress more - keep the areas from freezing again 3. - get the person into a warm area to warm up slowly - get them to medical help What the First Aider will do: 1. - get the patient to a warm place 2. - be sure the patient s clothing is warm and dry - cover the patient - place them in the recovery position 3. - get medical help REMEMBER: The environment does not have to be cold to suffer hypothermia. You can get hypothermia in the summer if you are not properly dressed. A FIRST AIDER WOLF CUB ALWAYS GETS HELP!!!

Name: HEAT INJURIES/SICKNESSES are H t C s: - pains in the muscles of the legs and stomach, caused by losing too much water and salt from sweating. H _ E _ h n: - loss of fluid through sweating. Name: ANIMAL AND HUMAN BITES Animal and human bites that break the skin are often contaminated by the saliva. This is a risk for infection and sometimes very serious. To be safe, ALWAYS give first aid to the cut/bite as if it is a serious infection until proven differently. NOTE: Try to identify the animal that did the bite. The authorities will want to examine this animal and/or destroy it. It will be tested for any contaminants. FIRST AID: 1. Be safe wear gloves. 2. See if the skin is broken. 3.
