Editor & Publisher: Frederic Roy phone: 561 315 3111 polo@themorningline.com 13 Trophy Inc. all rights reserved Strong Game Day Today with Three Spots to Fill for Semifinals Valiant Jeanette Sassoon and Valiant on the Boyle s C-Spear Ranch in Wyoming adjacent to her own Bow & Arrow Ranch. Valiant is 26 years-old, he has been blind since the age of 6, and together Valiant and Jeannette have inspired people from the East to the West. She lets him give what he wants to give, he really enjoys the exercise and the competition. Story Page 3 Above, Audi from left to right, Nic Roldan, Nico Pieres, Grant Ganzi, Marc Ganzi and Carlitos Gracida was the first of the 1 teams in the Joe Barry Memorial Cup to advance to the semifinals after a mesmerizing 10-9 win over La Herradura, a 21-year old team battling the much younger Audi with 11 years, at Isla Carroll West yesterday afternoon under light drizzle. Schedule & Results ML Polo Update - Sunday, January, 13 - AM Polo at a Glance Joe Barry. Three key games yesterday to start the third round of the Joe Barry. In the first one, Coca-Cola knocked Orchard Hill out of a chance to get to the semifinals with an overtime goal by Julio Arellano for the win 1-13. At one, under light drizzle, Crab Orchard was unstoppable leading Goose Creek 7-1 at halftime and 10-1 in the fourth, winning 12-6. Both teams end the crossbracket 2-1, awaiting tomorrow s Villa del Lago vs. ERG at 3 pm to decide the 2 semifinalists. The third game was more or less a repeat of previous La Herradura games, whereas La Herradura takes a strong lead by the third or fourth chukker only to see its opponent come back in the score in the fifth and sixth. La Herradura was up 7-3 at the half with a clear domination going -3 in the first play of the fourth on a 10- goal play by Carlos Gracida cutting an inside out tap with a lot of English from 10 yards, left of goal. Like father like son, Carlitos Gracida had a similar feat next play keeping his uncle Memo Gracida on his offside hip and controlling the ball with his nearside for a beautiful play and -. Audi duplicated the goal next play for -5 to end the fourth three behind, -5. Audi was coming back strong in the fifth with 2 more goals for -7, Carlos Gracida re-setting the goal difference to two, 9-7, on a huge 60 yard penalty conversion, ending the fifth. Returning to top competition after a 2-year hiatus, Carlos Gracida showed once again the great horseman and player he is, with such economical use of aids, and that wonderful killer instinct near goal. In the first play of the sixth, Nic Roldan scored for 9-, a defensive error for La Herradura cost the team an open goal foul, converted by Nic Roldan, for 9-all with still six full minutes to go. Three times La Herradura knocked on Audi s door Carlitos Gracida making a great save with the wave of his mallet and now with 2:35 on the clock Marc Ganzi was first on the loose ball shooting long across the midfield line, teammates on Audi relaying each other to score on the play for the first lead 10-9. Now with 1:7, La Herradura was again on the attack, this time trying to tie back, once again Marc Ganzi well positioned was able to send the danger away with a well placed 90 yard shot out of reach by La Herradura players, the game ending 25 seconds later by the boards, Audi the winner 10-9 and qualifying as first semifinalist of the 13 Joe Barry. In today s morning game at 10, the winner of Valiente vs. Zacara will advance to the semifinals for Bracket III, and at 3 pm, a win by Villa del Lago will likely qualify that team to the final with a 3-0 record and Crab Orchard in second place, while a win for ERG will send teams: Villa del Lago, Goose Creek, Crab Orchard and ERG, all four teams would be tied at 2-1, in which case a tiebreaker shootout would be scheduled for 10am Monday, January 21, on Field 1. Valiant Ten years ago, Jeanette Sassoon invited me to watch her horse Valiant do a dressage routine at her farm in Wellington. One thing about Valiant, she had told me, was that he was blind. Born to her in 197 Jeanette owned both father and mother the horse went blind at the age of 6 from a reaction to a penicillin shot which caused Uveitis, an inflammation of the uvea. Jeanette kept caring for the horse and their wonderful relationship started developing. 10 years ago I was witness to the most amazing experience a horseman can have. This 16 year-old blind horse under masterful riding was executing a Prix St. George routine in an outdoor ring. The horse was poised and extremely alert put he had a calm demeanor and allure about himself that was truly extraordinary. What blew me away, standing by one of the corner of the ring, was that the horse performed the routine with every amount of space available in the ring, namely the outside track where passing by me at a walk, trot or canter so many times, his feet would each come within an inch or two to a rugged 12 inch board (similar to the boards on the polo field) surrounding the perimeter of the ring. He never touched the board, but he never strayed more than a few inches. It was unique, as if the horse knew at all times and at speed where everything was. Now 26 years old, Valiant has had a fantastic life, bringing awareness to countless people on the East Coast and in the West where Jeanette Sassoon spends Summers with husband Gary Fellers and Valiant, the 26-year old wonder. Last year, Jeanette Sassoon s 25 year old blind horse Valiant competed in the Prix St. George scoring 65.7% and placed 6th out of 15 horses in Wellington among top International competitors. This coming Saturday evening Jan 26, 13 at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center, the audience at the World Dressage Masters will be in for something quite unexpected. Before commencing the popular Freestyle Competition at 7:00 pm, the newly released documentary movie trailer Valiant: Life Is A Horse will be premiered. Valiant and Jeanette will follow the trailer with a musical freestyle performance to the documentary s title song Follow Your Heart accompanied Page 3 The Morning Line Sunday, Jan., 13 live on piano by the acclaimed composer/ musician Eric Bikales. Valiant: Life Is A Horse is an undertaking of love to the legacy of Valiant. As life lessons unfolded, Jeanette and Valiant traveled from the highest levels of dressage to the wide open spaces of Wyoming touching the hearts and lives of many great horsemen such as John Lyons and Michael Poulin, as well as hundreds of other supporters. We are excited to have the opportunity to support such an event comments John Flannigan of Wellington Classic Dressage, the World Dressage Masters sponsor. Says Jeanette Sassoon, Valiant gave his sight, so others could see. He opened up a new world for me, understanding there are reasons for everything and opportunities to grow from them. I think the most important gift he s given me is trust and believing in myself, finding that unwavering friend that lives within each of us. Valiant is just another way of how the universe works when you have faith. The movie trailer Valiant - Life is a Horse is the launch of campaign to raise awareness about our relationship with horses at a deeper level. Watch it at www.valiantdocumentary.com. Page The Morning Line Sunday, Jan., 13 Don t you Hate Getting Sick? How to Combat That Flu Going Around? Photos by Snoopy Productions. Just do NOT get sick! Prevention, prevention, prevention! Boosting the Immune System can be achieved in many different ways, but to boost it strong enough not to get sick requires tough measures, especially if you are 35+: 1. If you are 35+ you probably have Jennine Cabanellas, MD heard about Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) already, if not, you better learn about BHRT because you will definitely need it! -- Replacing and balancing your declining levels of hormones like Testosterone, Estrogen, and Human Growth hormone, will re-boot one s Immune System. Balancing your hormones is so powerful that it is the standard of care for HIV patients for the last 15 years. Their Immune System is restored to the point that they can lead a normal life. Imagine what BHRT would do to a normal Immune System? It is like getting a new engine for your old car. 2. Vitamin Cocktail injections -- Forget about overdosing yourself with tons of pills and bad tasting syrups. Those days are gone. The new era is here, just get a supercharged shot and get it done. The high dose and high absorption of Vitamin B complex (Vitamin B1-B12) + Vitamin C in this injection achieves high enough levels in the body to Polo Is Family Affair for Garbers Simon V. Garber and his three sons Shaun, Jeffrey and Tyler are passionate about polo. Forming the Yellow Cab/SLS JETS Polo team, the Garbers display a lot of amazing energy together on and off the field, while playing in three leagues every weekend. The synergy between father and sons at polo is evident with crisp passes, tough defense and intense discussions. Whatever the outcome, there are always smiles, laughter, fist bumps and high fives afterward. The regular pills of both Vitamin B Complex and Vitamin C can never achieve the levels you need to make a big difference in your Immune System. (If you are afraid of injections, a lozenge version is available, it is almost as good) 3. Antioxidants -- Supplements containing Antioxidants will also boost your Immune System, but not as fast and as strong as the first 2 options. Get Prescription Strength or Pharmaceutical-Grade supplements, meaning those with high levels of absorption and purity. How do you know what grade supplements they are? Simple, if you are buying your supplements in a commercial store, in the mall, or Internet, you are probably getting commercial-grade products. Pharmaceutical-Grade Supplements can only be purchased at doctor s offices. The difference is like Tuna, either you get Sushi-grade tuna or the canned kind. There s a big difference. *Now, if you already have the symptoms, or you already got the flu, then do the Vitamin Cocktail shots to fight it fast & hard. A 9-goaler who played for Myopia teams in the late 19th century and early 1900s, Robert Gould Shaw, II (172 1930) was the committee s choice for the posthumous award. Shaw won all the major tournaments of the era in his time as an active player. For the Hall of Fame Iglehart Award, Tim Gannon, well known for his selfless generosity to polo and other charitable causes and a three-time winner of the U.S. Open (five-time winner with Outback) will be honored for his outstanding lifetime contributions to the sport. To be recognized as the posthumous Hall of Fame inductee for the Iglehart Award is Bill Gilmore, who is remembered as a powerful force in the revival of the game in California after World War II. In the Horses to Remember category the committee elected Fairy Story a celebrated mare bred in England and later owned and played by Stephen Laddy Sanford. Fairy Story was one of the top polo ponies in the 19s, sweeping an unprecedented number of the major awards given at that time. Ever Ready, a chestnut mare, trained and played by Ray Harrington (Hall of Fame 1993), was also selected to be 10 Goal player Mike Azzaro in a play with Owen Rinehart in the mid-90s. (ph Alex Pacheco) honored in this category. Ever Ready was Ray s war horse on whom he depended throughout his extraordinary four consecutive wins in the U.S. Open, 1966 1969. She was awarded the Hartman Award for Best Playing pony of the Open in 1969 and also that year played with distinction in Argentina in the 1969 Cup of the Americas at Palermo. Committee Chairman Horace Laffaye states The Class of 13 represents the best of American polo. The Committee selected 10 and 9-goal players with outstanding records, a pair of supporters of the game which made Tim Gannon winning his 3rd U.S. Open in 1999 with Jeff Blake, Adolfo Cambiaso and Lolo Castagnola. Tim would give the team to Phil Heatley for a th Outback win in 00 and to his son Chris for a fifth title in 01. (ph Alex Pacheco) lasting contributions to polo in this country, and two polo ponies which were at the top of their respective generations. I wish to express my gratitude to all the Committee members who worked hard and long in selecting these inductees from a large pool of highly qualified nominees.
