The 49 th Schools Dance Festival Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Schools Dance Association Limited (HKSDA) and the Education Bureau (EDB) Competition Information 1. Venues & Competition Schedule 1.1 Please refer to the Annex 1 for details. 1.2 The competition schedule for the (Solo/Duet/Trio) in Primary School and Special School, published in July 2012, has been updated. 2. Fixtures Fixtures will be uploaded to the HKSDA website (www.hksda.org.hk) in early December. 3. Competition Categories Section Types of dance 1 Lower Primary (Lower Pri.) Upper Primary (Upper Pri.) Participants who wear buckle shoes or tap shoes are required to provide wooden board to protect the floor mat at the venue. Failure to comply with this shall lead to disqualification. 1
4. Application 4.1 Eligibility: Participating schools must be the school member of the HKSDA. 4.2 The HKSDA School Membership Registration/Renewal: Participating schools shall register/renew as the 2012/13 school member of the HKSDA on or before 31 st October. For the details, please refer to the HKSDA website (www.hksda.org.hk). 4.3 Fee: A fee of $200 will be charged for each dance or each team (DanceSport) entered. Payments should be made by a crossed cheque payable to the HONG KONG SCHOOLS DANCE ASSOCIATION LIMITED. Please state the school name on the back of the cheque. 4.4 Enrolment: Schools are required to complete the Master Entry Form (Annex 2) and the Individual Dance Entry Form(s) (Annex 3-5) (one entry form for each dance, the form can be photocopied if necessary), or the DanceSport Entry Form (Annex 6). Conditions of Entry 5.1 The A.M. session, P.M. session and whole day session of the same school shall be treated as 3 individual units when entering for the competitions. Combining units is not allowed and shall lead to disqualification. (Exception: A session with 6 or fewer classes may combine with another session of the same school.) 5.2 If schools stage upper primary students in lower primary division competitions (except in DanceSport), the result of the dance shall be stripped. 5.3 In DanceSport Competitions, each team shall be composed of two students from the same school. All teams of the same school shall perform at the same time but shall be judged individually. 5.4 Schools shall clear all copyright issues related to their dances. Infringement of copyright shall lead to disqualification. 5.5 The organiser reserves right to distribute and circulate the dances performed by any formats (including but not limited to text, audio and visual record) to the public and the media. 5.6 Unauthorised video recording or photographing are strictly prohibited in the competition venues. Participating schools should remind their teachers, students, parents and supporters to closely observe this house rule beforehand. 2

6. Adjudication Criteria 6.1 All Dance Types 6.1.1 The adjudication panel shall comprise four adjudicators. The final score of a performance shall be the average of the remaining scores after discarding the highest and the lowest. If the number of adjudicators in a panel is three or less, the final score of a performance shall be the average of the scores given by all the adjudicators. 6.1.2 The team shall not be allowed to perform if the costumes cannot meet the requirements stated in the DanceSport Dress Specifications (See Table 5.7). 6.1.3 One point shall be deducted from final score if: (1) Exceeding the time limit of performance (See Table 5.8); (2) The number of dancers in Group dance cannot meet the requirements stated (See Table 5.8); 6.1.4 No point shall be scored if the number of dancers in Solo / Duet / Trio Dance cannot meet the requirements stated (See Table 5.8); 6.1.5 Each dance can only perform in one category, otherwise the result of this dance shall be stripped of all the categories. 6.2 6.2.1 General characteristics of the region or tribe (Choice of music, costume and dancers are capable to present 35% the style of the tribe, including body gestures and rhythm) 6.2.2 Structure (The overall choreography, including whether the movement design can match dancers ability, music 30% arrangement and dancing language) 6.2.3 Performance (The overall ability of dancers, including communication and team work, expression, basic 35% techniques and sense of aesthetics) 6.3 & Oriental Dance 6.3.1 General characteristics of the region or tribe (Choice of music, costume and dancers are capable to present 35% the style of the tribe, including body gestures and rhythm) 6.3.2 Structure (The overall choreography, including whether the movement design can match dancers ability, music 30% arrangement and dancing language) 6.3.3 Performance (The overall ability of dancers, including communication and team work, expression, basic 35% techniques and sense of aesthetic) 6.4 Modern Dance 6.4.1 Theme (Dancers are capable to present the theme through the performance) 30% 6.4.2 Structure (The creativity and the overall choreography, including whether the movement design can match 35% dancers ability, the dancing language and whether the form of performance, e.g. the choice of music, the use of stage, costume, props and equipment, can highlight the theme) 6.4.3 Performance (The overall ability of dancers, including communication and team work, expression, basic 35% techniques, coordination, use of power, sense of rhythm and aesthetic) 6.5 Children Dance 6.5.1 Theme (Highlights the childlike innocence) 30% 6.5.2 Structure (The overall choreography in harmony with the theme, including whether the movement design can 35% match dancers ability, music arrangement and dancing language) 6.5.3 Performance (The overall ability of dancers, including communication and team work, expression and sense of 35% rhythm) 5
6.6 Jazz Dance and Street Dance 6.6.1 Characteristics (Dancers are capable to present the proper characteristics, style, theme and messages of the dance) 6.6.2 Structure (The creativity and the overall choreography, including whether the movement design can match dancers ability, the dancing language and whether the form of performance, e.g. the choice of music, the use of stage, costume, props and equipment, can highlight the theme,) 6.6.3 Performance (The overall ability of dancers, including communication and team work, expression, basic techniques, coordination, use of power, sense of rhythm and aesthetic) 6.7 DanceSport 6.7.1 Characteristics (Dancers are capable to present the proper style of the dance, including body gestures and rhythm) 6.7.2 Structure (The overall choreography, including whether the movement design and choice of music can match dancers ability and the use of stage) 6.7.3 Performance (The overall ability of dancers, including communication and team work, expression, basic techniques, sense of rhythm and aesthetic) 30% 35% 35% 30% 35% 35% 7. Awards and Souvenirs 7.1 Individual Dance Award 7.1.1 Honours Award*# -- will be awarded to a dance scoring 85 points or above. 7.1.2 Highly Commended Award*# -- will be awarded to a dance scoring 80 to 84.9 points. 7.1.3 Commended Award* -- will be awarded to a dance scoring 75 to 79.9 points. 7.1.4 Choreography Award -- will be given to choreographers attaining a high standard (only original choreography without prior stage performance in Hong Kong will be considered for this award. The choreography details shall be provided on the day of competition). * A certificate will be awarded to each school and participating students of winning the Commended Award or above. # A trophy will be awarded to school of winning the Highly Commended Award or Honours Award. A certificate will be awarded to choreographer of winning the Choreography Award. 7.2 Overall Awards 7.2.1 There will be overall awards for the,, Oriental Dance and Modern Dance. 7.2.2 The top three primary and secondary schools, with the most total points in each type of dance (mentioned in 7.2.1) and have to enter at least two performances in the same type of dance, will receive an overall award. 8. Schools Dance Festival Winners Performance cum Prize Presentation The Schools Dance Festival Winners Performance cum Prize Presentations will be held from 1 to 5 May 2013 at Sha Tin Town Hall. To provide more opportunities for students to participate in the performance, it will only include Honours Award group dances; the arrangement is as follows: (1) Schools that are Overall Award winners, with at least one Honours Award group dance will be invited to perform at the event; and (2) The remaining performance opportunities will be allocated through ballot, taking into account the percentage share of Honours Awards group dances of various types. 9. Schools Dance Show The Schools Dance Show will be held on 13 April, 2013 (Saturday) at Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The performance will give priorities to Honours Award of Solo/Duet/Trio of various dances and DanceSports. 10. Others 10.1 Dance Sharing It is a good opportunity for students to share and exchange their dance experiences in the Schools Dance Festival; The Organising Committee encourages schools to arrange students to watch all other dance performances in the same session as far as possible. 10.2 Dance Appreciation To deepen students understanding in art of dance, teachers are welcome to accompany their students to watch the dance competitions. The AM session is from 10:00 to 12:30 noon and the PM session is from 2:30 to 5:00. The maximum number of visitors for each venue in each session is 40. If schools are interested in participated the events, please complete and fax (Fax No.: 3741 2979) the Dance Appreciation Application Form (Annex 7) to Ms Chrissy NG of the HKSDA on or before 17 th Dec., 2012 (Monday).
