WELCOME TO THE 10th EDITION The Portugal Rugby Youth Festival has already established itself as one of the best and most international youth rugby festivals for clubs and school teams in Europe. It is known for its excellent organization and standard of play. The event team (staff, sponsors and volunteers) is very proud of what it was achieved so far in the last nine (9) editions. Big challenge now for our 10th year, where some surprises are expected to be announced in due course. www.portugalrugbyfestival.com Our goal is to keep improving every year in order to provide an unforgettable experience to every participant. To all Portuguese players we hope that they benefit and enjoy the opportunity to play with teams from all over the world. As for the foreign participating teams, we want them to have a taste of our developed standard of rugby and, at the same time, take the best memories from Lisbon and the Portuguese people, which will definitely make them desire to come back again, as happens with most of our visitors. The Portugal Rugby Youth Festival was created to be a meeting point for young players from many parts of the world where Rugby is the common element and the language that all understand. Regardless of each team level, all of them are welcomed in Portugal. In fact, it s exactly that combination of different origins and goals that make the Portugal Rugby Youth Festival an absolutely unique event! Be part of it! THE MOVE SPORTS TEAM
PASSION FOR THE SPORT The passion for rugby is the major key reason to take part in an event such as this. More than 300 Rugby matches in only 2 days. It is an impressive figure that requires great effort in terms of logistics and general organization. A total of 7 rugby pitches, where Estádio Universitário de Lisboa is a theatre of dreams for so many young rugby players. Every year there are more and more foreign teams who wish to participate. With all our experience from the past Festivals, we are confident that soon about half of teams taking part in the event will be coming from abroad (20 last year). However, we will always keep a minimum number of places guaranteed for the Portuguese clubs. One of the main goals of the event is therefore the development of the game in Portugal which can only be achieved with a large participation of Portuguese rugby clubs. The referees, who are many times forgotten, are essential. To all teams and players we ask to always respect them. We also invite refs from different countries and always ask visiting teams if they want to bring one in their touring parties. www.portugalrugbyfestival.com
TOURNAMENT FACILITIES Lisbon, and in particular the Estádio Universitário de Lisboa, offers unparallel conditions for the practice of Rugby. It has hosted in the past international events such as: the Athletics Junior World Championship in 1994, the Iberoamerican Athletics Championship in 1998 and the athletics events of the 2009 Lusofonia Games, and recently the Rugby European Championship U-18 (organized by Move sports in 2016). Included is one of the country s most emblematic rugby stadiums, home venue of the Portugal National Rugby PORTUGAL LISBON CULTURE www.portugalrugbyfestival.com The cultural scene in Lisbon today is a vibrant combination of old and new, as the ghosts of Lisbon s grand past echo evocatively around the city s contemporary venues. Lisbon offers a formidable number of venues and companies can often be found performing in a wide variety of sites, such as outdoor parks and national palaces. MODERNITY The heart of Lisbon is filled with wide avenues, green trees, modernist-style buildings, mosaic decorations and numerous cafes. The city is now being reborn and renovated and was recently considered one of the trendiest cities of the world. After many years of standstill and passiveness, nowadays its modern, lively, energetic and cosmopolitan atmosphere reminds of the times when Lisbon was the trade Centre and the starting point for many sea expeditions. WEATHER Portugal is a country of marked regional diversity, with the lush forests and mountain ranges of the north and centre contrasting greatly with the arid plains and coastline beaches of the south. In general, it boasts a temperate climate all year round with long hot summers, warm spring and autumn months and relatively mild winters. The city of Lisbon and its surroundings are located in the coastal area, facing the Atlantic Ocean.
ATRACTIONS The capital, Lisbon, is a captivating city filled with fascinating history and can be explored very conveniently. Visit the famous neighborhoods of Alfama, Mouraria and Graça, the city s old quarter and perhaps its most atmospheric part. Nearby, Lisbon s dramatically located Castle dates back to Roman times and offers breathtaking city panoramas, over roof-tops and across the mighty River Tagus. The waterfront suburb of Belem, the departure point for Portugal s great discoverers of the 15th and 16th centuries and the impressive Lisbon sights, thoughtfully clustered together. LEISURE The city of Lisbon has a fantastic atmosphere. The options for spending a free day in Lisbon are almost infinite, with its ancient and modern architecture, all kinds of interesting monuments scattered around every corner, exciting touristic activities such as Bus, Tuk Tuk and Sailing Tours, or even its wide selection of high-end Shopping Centres. A must see for anyone who wants to experience southern European lifestyle at its best. EASY ACCESS Lisbon is only 2 hours away from most western European cities and there are now many low cost flight connections to the city main airport. The tournament venue is located 20 minutes from the Lisbon International Airport, and from almost every accommodation facilities. FRIENDLYNESS Portugal is an exceedingly friendly place. Its people are some of the nicest around to visiting tourists and truly have pleasure and enjoy in being good hosts. FOOD & DRINK The Portugal Rugby Youth Festival organization will provide all participants with healthy athlete food and drinks at the accommodation sites. Breakfast and dinner are served on buffet style and dinner is always a warm meal. Lunch is included in the festival package and will be taken on the playing venue. The lunch menu includes soup, salad, main course, dessert and drinks at the event restaurant. Foreign teams travelling to Lisbon and wishing to include lunch at the event restaurant are recommended to book it in advance. This will permit your team to reserve tables in between games avoiding any delays in your competition team arrangements. ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE On Friday, April the 7th, there will be an opening event (Welcome Cocktail) for all team officials, referees, sponsors and organization in a local venue to be announced. First round & preliminary matches start Saturday morning. All finals will be played Sunday. The organization will coordinate and make all travel arrangements for foreign teams arriving by air at the Lisbon International Airport. Teams arriving by coach or train should make their way to the accommodation site on Friday and will be assisted by its own Team Liaison for the whole period of stay. Monday, April the 9th will see the majority visiting teams departing from Lisbon International Airport. Teams wishing anticipate or extend their stay in Portugal can do so by informing the organization at the time of booking.
PRIZES All participants will have their own team photo taken at festival. All participant players will receive a festival kit (including official t-shirt). There are cups for the winner and runners up in the 2 Age Level competitions. There will be a Player of The Tournament Award in the 2 Age Levels. There will be one Fair-Play Award.
FESTIVAL & ENTERTAINMENT We emphasize the friendly get together between youngsters of different nationalities and cultures. Every year we host a trophy ceremony presentation for everyone to attend. Once again the Coaches Corner tent will be available, with complimentary refreshments for team officials, coaches, referees and other adult guests to enjoy their free time in the festival.
THE TOURNAMENT FORMAT The tournament format of Portugal Rugby Youth Festival 2018 secures all teams competitive matches and the chance to play international opponents. The tournament will be played according to the regulations of the WR Youth Rugby Rules and the Portuguese Rugby Federation and is open to any clubs, which are members of a rugby association that is registered with the WR. In the first day of the competition on Saturday, the 7th of April, every team will play 3 matches. The play-off groups and finals (2-3 games) will be played on Sunday, the 8rd of April. The tournament organization reserves the right (if needed) to make adjustments to the tournament format to guarantee that every team plays the same number of rugby matches. www.portugalrugbyfestival.com

This year s competition format will be similar to previous editions with Saturday Round- Robin System. The play-offs and finals will take place on Sunday (April the 8th). All teams will be guaranteed the same number of rugby matches, regardless of their results. COMPETITION

It is our goal that every team stays well & comfortably accommodated at the cheapest possible price.
