Battalion Masse: 1809- Austrian regular infantry (Line or Grenadiers) units had a special anti-cavalry formation called battalion Masse. When a regular infantry battalion is formed into a dense column with the miniatures arranged at least 3 ranks deep then the battalion is formed for a battalion masse formation. When faced by a cavalry charge morale check, the battalion has a +2 CMR adjustment morale modifier to pass the morale check. No modifier is given for infantry shock combat. The front face of the battalion is assumed to be a square formation vs. charging cavalry shock combat. When using musket fire, use the normal 3 rank firing line found on the small arms firing charts. If the battalion is in morale disorder, all benefits for battalion masse are lost. The battalion masse formation can be used against European and Ottoman Turk armies. 1793-1796 Only Austrian armies under Archduke Charles command may use Battalion masse formations. Firing Line Tactics: 1790-1806 See rule at front under National rules. Grenadiers Old & Young btns: 1805-1806 During these years the Austrian organized their grenadiers into Old or Young grenadier battalions under the General Mack reforms of 1805. The grenadier line has two CMR values use the 1 st for the old grenadier btns, the 2 nd CMR value for the young grenadier btns. Kavallerie (Wurst) artillery: 1790- Austrian Kavallerie (horse or wurst) artillery batteries have a base movement of 10 instead of 14 for other horse artillery. This is due to the wurst artillerymen padded seats on the actual cannon carriage. Militia Rule (M): 1790- See rule at front under National rules. Wargamerabbit Page 2 12/26/11
Open Terrain tactics: 1790-1805 See rule at front under National rules. Regimental artillery: 1790- See rule at front under National rules. No artillery brigade batteries are used with Austrian commands using regimental artillery. Third (3 rd ) Rank skirmishers: 1809- Only veteran regular units or units with 7 CMR or greater receive the third (3 rd ) rank skirmisher deployment ability.
