Official Publication Of The Pacific Mariners Yacht Club March 2012 PMYC S 49th OPENING DAY SUNDAY MARCH 11, 2012 COMMENCING 1100 HOURS The Log
Tom Hall - Commodore March is coming in like a Lion at PMYC Is it March already? Time really does fly when you re having fun! PMYC has been a whirlwind of activity during February, and March will be just as busy. It started off with 100 plus people attending Staff Commodore John Black s Tales from Toadsuck. Rolling right into maybe the Best Super Bowl Party yet. Congratulations to the lucky winners and I m not talking about the NY Giants. The food & fun was epic. We also held our first PMYC General Membership meeting in some time. The turnout was great and the meeting was casual, but very informative with lots of great feedback. Please plan on attending the next General Membership meeting on Friday, April 13th at 7pm. This is a great opportunity to let the Bridge and Board hear what is important to you, and for them to talk about their plans for PMYC. Kia & Kent Andersson hosted both a Mardi Gras Friday Night Dinner & our newest annual event the Oscar Party! They couldn t have been more different or successful. Special thanks goes to Tina Michel & Karen Otterbein for the amazing Oscar hors d'oeuvres. As you know, PMYC is dedicated to sharing our Corinthian Spirit with the public. In that regards we always welcome other groups to our Club House. The latest were the Westchester Elks and the parents of Sea Scout Ship 16. Both had a great time. March 11th is Opening Day, so break out the Blazers! Of course, Opening Day means a complete Spring Cleaning of the Club House. Please sign up for work parties ASAP. Have you noticed our beautiful parking lot Gardens? We are ready for Opening Day because of the hard work of Staff Com s Mary Wichser & Sparky Mundo and the green thumbed Janet Okawa-Mundo. They are amazing, and the Gardens are too! The new Guest Dock Safety Ladders have been purchased and are waiting to be installed. Thank you Fleet Surgeon Darlena Monet for the new wall mounted First Aid Kit. Let s use it wisely. Finally, I d like to thank the PMYC Board of Directors. For the first time ever, the Directors have pledged to take on additional leadership rolls in committees & Club functions. The Board is being very proactive & I can see many of them making the climb to Commodore. I m proud to work with them. Let s keep the fun rolling!
Larry Koch - Vice Commodore Let's start with a rhetorical question...do we know how to throw a Super Bowl party or what? As usual, the party was one of the highlights of the year. The food was excellent, the game was hard fought, the commercials were funny and the pool winners shared their joy with everyone. Jim Dalby, Pamela Johnson and Bob Butte were the big winners. We hear Kim Butte actually helped spend Bob's winnings on a vacation to Jamaica after she returned from a stint working on one of National Geographic s exploratory ships, "The Sea Bird", in Mexico. She's now working on the "Sea Lion" in Costa Rica. What a life! Congratulations to all. What a day! Commodore Tom Hall finally got another boat. A 13' Boston Whaler. Actually, we heard him say it's Karin's boat, but he gets to ride along "for good luck and to drink beer". Speaking of new boat owners, we heard Gary Simpson also purchased a new tender. Next time you see Gary, ask him about what happened the day he launched it for the first time. Something about a floating trailer. It's a very funny story, which I'm sure he will enjoy retelling. Megan Clausen, Mike and Lisa's daughter, performed in her first theatrical production of Beauty and the Beast at El Segundo High School. She played three different roles and if I must say so, she was outstanding. I see an Academy Award some day. A group of us attended the play and we had quite the party afterwards. What a fun night. John Black's book signing was a great success. He confirmed to us that there were no ghost writers involved and he wrote it all by himself. Someone needs to call Webster's and get "Toadsuckians" added to the Dictionary. Linda cooked another great meal for everyone to enjoy. Thanks to them...when does the sequel come out and is there a movie in your future? Ellen McKay and Fred Whitman threw a 60's themed Birthday party for Ellen. Lots of family and friends were there. It felt just like Halloween all over again, especially Curt and Roxann and Cal's hairdo. You guys do go all out! What a night. The Oscar party was a giant success. We can't wait till next year when it will be bigger and better. Opening Day festivities are just around the corner. Mark your calendars if you haven't already. March 11th at 11:00 A.M. Planning and preparations are already in high gear, with all the usual volunteers doing what they love to do best and helping to make ours the best opening day in Marina Del Rey. Don't forget to sign up for cleanup day and find something around the clubhouse to clean, polish, paint, fix or repair. Don't be bashful, use your imagination. Lastly, if you have an idea on how to make PMYC a better yacht club, don't hesitate to contact any Flag Officer or Director. We are always looking for ways to improve what we have," The Best Yacht Club in Marina Del Rey". Thank you for all your support and contributions to our club.
Alan Rock Fleet Captain Welcome to Opening Day and what is considered by many members to be the club s finest day! In addition to getting the club house ready, I have the distinct privilege to inspect our fleet. As a boat member of PMYC, you are strongly encouraged to support your club by participating in the 2012 fleet inspection on Saturday March 10 th from noon to 4pm. In addition to trophies, there will be a first place prize gift certificate to West Marine. The fleet inspection offers you the perfect excuse to prepare your boat for the upcoming sailing/boating season. A sign up sheet is posted at the club house or just e-mail me at alanrock1@gmail.com and I will sign you up. I am looking forward to spending some time on your boat, and please keep in mind that I can be bribed! See you all on Opening Day.
Directors Report This is new addition to our Log. Each month, the PMYC Board of Directors will report to the members on our achievements and new goals. The Board of Directors is actively involved in the club and most of us are serving on at least one club committee. We are still learning our roles, but I assure you we will try to make a difference. We also want everyone to know that the PMYC Board of Directors is representing you, the members. We want to hear from you. Email any ideas that you think could make our club better. A new email address has been set up which represents your voice: pmycboard@gmail.com Talk to us. Every idea or comment will be considered. Warmest regards, Gary Panas Chairman, PMYC Board of Directors
