Jaco Snyman, Potchefstroom, skryf: Ek wil eerstens julle almal bedank vir n wonderlike tydskrif. Ek en my twee seuns, Johan (11) en Marco (9), geniet dit regtig baie. Ons mis nie n uitgawe nie. Ek en my oudste, Johan, is kranige hengelaars (varswater en see). Ons kom egter net nie so gereeld by die see as wat ons graag wil nie. Na aanleiding van die Julie 2012-uitgawe waarin n pragtige kabeljou van 46 kg gepubliseer is, dink ek terug aan Augustus 1994 toe ek n kabeljou van 42 kg gevang het. Ek onthou dit nog soos gister. Ek en n paar vriende was op n hengeluitstappie Richardsbaai toe. Die een dag het ons uitgery na n plek met die naam Dorsens, so n klipgooi noord van Richardsbaai af. In daardie tyd kon n mens mos nog op die stand ry met n 4x4 die betrokke plek kon in elk geval net met n 4x4 bereik word. Laatmiddag het ek n elf gevang wat die beperkte lengte net-net gemaak het. Ek het hom in n koelhouer met vars seewater aan die lewe gehou. Net voor sononder het ek die lewendige elf gehaak en voor op die klipbank gaan staan en gooi. Ek het nog nie die penkatrol mooi bemeester nie en so n groot aas was vir my op daardie stadium nog moeilik om te gooi. Met so n woer-woer -gooi het ek darem die lewendige elf in die water gekry, sommer so tussen die klippe in. Die groot wag het begin. Dit was effens onweer en die wind het ook redelik gewaai. Die water was effens troebel. Wat n lang wag moes wees, was toe nie so lank nie. Ná omtrent 15 minute se staan was daar skielik n redelike stamp op my stok. Ek het eers gedink ek verbeel my, maar die volgende oomblik trek iets my stok heel plat en ek moes vir die vale vasklou! Die kabeljou het met sy eerste lopie omtrent 80 m se 19 kg-kingfisher-lyn van my Daiwa Magforce afgestroop. Ek kon die vis draai en die geveg was aan. Die kabeljou het n paar keer tot voor in die branders gekom en dan weer al die lyn wat ek teruggewen het, afgestroop. Die geveg het n hele 45 minute geduur en met die hulp van die regte brander kon ek die vis in n vlak sloep tussen die klippe intrek. Ek kon dit amper nie glo toe ek die kabeljou langs my sien lê nie. Dit het dalk lank terug gebeur, maar vir my voel dit nog soos gister... 6 STYWE LYNE Die Hengelaar se Vriend Augustus 2013

Sukses met nuwe katrol Danie Engelbrecht, Pretoria-Noord, skryf: Baie dankie dat u my wenk van die maand in die Junie 2013-uitgawe van Stywe Lyne geplaas het. Ek is veral baie ingenome met die Alcedo First Run 6504-katrol wat ek ontvang het en met die vinnige aflewering van die pakkie wat ek in die pos ontvang het. Ek het dadelik lyn op die katrol gedraai en het op Donderdag 13 Junie die katrol by Meerhof, Hartbeespoortdam, gaan uittoets. Met my nuwe katrol kon ek die aas verder werp as met my ander katrolle. Ná n rukkie se hengel het n karp die aas opgetel en die Alcedo se palrat laat skree. Met my nuwe katrol kon ek die vis lekker speel en omdat ek alleen gehengel het, kon ek die vis maklik skep. Ek het n foto van die 3 kg-karp tesame met die katrol afgeneem. Op die foto kan u die mooi vis en katrol sien. For the best tigerfishing in the world! REDCLIFF ZAMBEZI LODGE Kiwi-groete Die laaste ding wat n mens aan dink as jy oorweeg om landuit te trek, is of jy daar vir karp sal kan hengel. Marius Koekemoer van Auckland (Nieu-Seeland) het verlede maand in sy artikel vertel dat die meeste oud-suid-afrikaners wat in dié tipe sport belangstel, eers in Nieu-Seeland self uitgevind het dat daar wel karp is. Drie oud-suid-afrikaners, al drie vissermanne en passievol oor karphengel, het besluit om n karphengelklub te begin. Die klub is nog klein maar is besig om te groei. Marius stuur vandeesmaand vars nuus vir ons lesers Red. BRIEWE LETTERS Hoop alles gaan goed daar in Suid-Afrika! Daar is baie groot koi-karpe in Nieu- Seeland se waters. Ons hoor gereeld van 20 kg en meer. By die Aucklanddieretuin asook in Nieu-Seeland se damme is daar bv koi-karpe van meer as 25 kg. Ons gaan nog monsters hier uithaal. Hulle is besig om in die damme en riviere te broei. Karp is hier om te bly en ons gaan nog dié sport onder die oud- Suid-Afrikaners uitbrei. Ons klub het intussen nog drie lede bygekry. Alles van die beste hier uit Kiwi-land. North-West is certainly one of the provinces with some of the best angling waters in South Africa. Bloemhof Dam in North-West is probably the most popular fishing venue in the country and hosts major angling tournaments, such as the annual Bloemhofdam Bonanza and the Carp World Championships. Other popular dams in this province are Roodekopjes, Hartbeespoort, Vaalkop, Groot Marico and Barberspan, to name but a few. Aware of the huge potential of these dams, the provincial government of North-West Province, together with the Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science at Rhodes University, launched a pilot Inland Fisheries Programme in the province. It is very important that all anglers visiting these dams take note of this development. In a nutshell, this programme has two major objectives. One is the development of facilities at certain popular dams in North-West; the other is a small-scale fisheries project whereby netting permits will be issued for certain dams, especially in rural areas. Development of angling facilities ing areas, security, boat launching pads, etc. The aim is to take hands with the local community and use them to improve the facilities and to provide services. Many of the dams are situated in rural areas and these communities need to derive some benefit from these resources. The most important way to finance this project will be through entrance and accommodation fees. However, the community can also benefit through the supply of services, for example security guards and angling guides, selling of goods, etc at the fishing resorts. Small-scale fisheries The provincial government intends to issue netting permits for certain dams in especially rural areas, most of them not popular fishing dams. The netting permits will be issued to catch fish species that are abundant in the targeted dams. Gillnets will be provided in lengths and mesh sizes that are fish-species specific. The species to be targeted and numbers of fish to be caught will be scientifically determined by specialists from universities. Only a limited number of netting permits per fishery will be issued to permit holders. Government holds the view that netting under controlled circumstances can be done in a sustainable way, providing rural communities with an important food source and potential income. By legalising netting, unlawful netting practices will be curtailed by the permit holders looking after their own interests. The permit holders will be trained to use their gear responsibly and will be working with the The provincial government acknowledges the fact that many of the angling waters in North-West need more and better facilities for anglers. The principle of the user must pay will be applied to help finance the project. Facilities will include the upgrading of accommodation, camptraditional leaders to ensure that control systems are in place and that the fishers adhere to the permit regulations. It is in everybody s interest that the fish stocks are sustainably utilised in order not to deplete this resource. The way ahead The launch of the Inland Fisheries Programme took place at Disaneng Dam on 23 November 2012. It was followed by the appointment of fishing guides at Taung Dam, who will assist recreational anglers visiting this beautiful dam in North-West Province. The next dam to be incorporated in the Inland Fisheries Programme is Molatedi Dam near Zeerust. The dam will be zoned to make provision for recreational angling and commercial netting. Other dams on the shortlist for the development of angling facilities are Bloemhof and Boskop. The programme is being implemented in consultation with representatives of the organised and recreational angling community. The angling community welcomes the development of angling facilities at the dams they are visiting. However, the netting of fish will always be a very sensitive issue for sport and recreational anglers. Although we acknowledge that fish is an important food resource for the community, the responsible and sustainable utilisation of this resource is a real concern to our anglers. Only time will tell whether the government will be able to protect fish resources for the benefit of future generations.
