Kids can fill out this game booklet, answering questions about really fun places we ll guide you to visit while you are here. Parents... get ready to take the kids to each spot. Kids... just go to each page and answer the questions about what s on that page. Your parents can help you, and they ll be taking you to cool places where you can see the mountains, rivers, wildlife and fun that s all around our area. Ready to begin? Just turn to the next page and answer the question. After you have filled out all the pages in the Family Fun Adventure Game, and gone to all these places to explore Georgia s Blue Ridge, just bring the booklet back to the Welcome Center. One of our staff members will check your answers, and you can claim your special prize (one per family, please). We hope you had fun on your adventure, and we hope you ll be coming back to see us soon in Georgia s Blue Ridge! page 3

WHERE ARE YOU? Georgia s Blue Ridge is in the mountains of north Georgia. Can you find where the state of Georgia is on the map? See where Blue Ridge, Georgia is? What is the name of the mountain range that starts right in Georgia s Blue Ridge called? Mountains USA APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS GEORGIA S BLUE RIDGE page 4

GEORGIA S BLUE RIDGE - RIVER, LAKE AND TOWNS Georgia s Blue Ridge is filled with fun places to visit. Mother Nature is everywhere you look. Look on the map below and see if you can find the rivers and lakes that are here, and also the towns. Then mark them on the map with these symbols: Toccoa River Lake Blue RIdge Towns of Blue Ridge & McCaysville Ducktown Ocoee River 68 2 Copper Hill McCaysville TENN. GA. N.C. 64 5 3 60 Toccoa River S60 Mineral Bluff ^ N old 2 2 mi 5 km 1 Blue Ridge McD s 4 6 76 515 Morganton 60 515 Ask a Road Lake Blue Ridge to Ellijay 5 page 5

MERCIER ORCHARDS - WORKING FARM, FUN PLACE TO VISIT (#1 on map) Mercier Orchards is a working apple and fruit orchard. You can see how farming is done today in the apple and fruit orchards that surround the main building. Go inside and you ll see many ways fruits are used in delicious pies, pastries, jams and more. Farming here in Georgia s Blue Ridge was once the way people grew and raised all their food, in the days before supermarkets! All around our area you can see farms and fields, some of them still in use as working farms. Name three kinds of apples grown at Mercier Orchards: Apples Apples Apples page 6

STAND ON TWO STATES AT ONCE (#2 on map) The Georgia/Tennessee Line is right in McCaysville/Copperhill. You can stand on the line and actually be in two states at one time! The old iron bridge here is very historic, and was once the only way to get across the river for miles around. On one side of the bridge, the river is called the Toccoa River, and on the other it is called the Ocoee River. The river flows north into the Tennessee River, which flows into the Mississippi River, which flows all the way to the ocean! page 7

HORSESHOE BEND PARK - RIVER ENVIRONMENT, FUN PLACE TO VISIT (#3 on map) Horseshoe Bend Park is right on the Toccoa River and it s a fun place to take a picnic and sit by the river, wade or even play horseshoes! The park is named for a big curve in the Toccoa River. See it on the main map in the front of this booklet? It looks like a horseshoe. A large number of fish and aquatic plants live in the Toccoa River. What kind of fish do you think swim here? Mark with an X: Brown Trout Rainbow Trout Brook Trout Tiger Shark Minnows Sting Ray Bass Bream Octopus page 8

THE BLUE RIDGE TRAIN DEPOT (#4 on map) The town of Blue Ridge was founded in 1886 when the railroad located here. The depot is the home of the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. Find the plaque on the depot that tells you when it was built. page 9

SANDY BOTTOMS - FOREST & RIVER ENVIRONMENT (#5 on map) Sandy Bottoms is an area of the wild Toccoa River as it flows right through the Chattahoochee National Forest. Here the river is more shallow, and the woods on both sides are in their natural state. The Toccoa River starts not too far from here in little streams formed by rainfall in the mountains. The water flows down the river, past Sandy Bottoms, then keeps going to fill up Lake Blue Ridge just upstream of here. What s a Watershed? RAINFALL TOCCOA RIVER DAM LAKE BLUE RIDGE Sandy Bottoms TOCCOA RIVER MOUNTAIN STREAMS See how the little raindrops make big lakes and rivers? It s all part of a watershed which means part of a cycle of water from rainfall to little streams, to big rivers that flow to the sea. Our water comes from these watersheds and we must be very careful to protect them from pollution and over development. If you were a raindrop, how long do you think it would take you to flow from the mountains, or headwaters, of the Toccoa River all the way to Lake Blue Ridge? (don t worry, there is no single right answer) page 10

Why Do We Build a Dam? DAM ELECTRICITY LAKE TURBINE WATER RIVER BLUE RIDGE DAM - MANMADE WONDER, FUN PLACE TO VISIT (#6 on map) Lake Blue RIdge Dam is one of the largest earthen dams in the world. You can drive right over top of it! Stop at an interesting little pulloff area on the left hand side of the road before you cross the dam to see a story about it and why it was created by the Tennessee Valley Authority. When you drive over the dam you will see Lake Blue RIdge on one side, and the Toccoa River below it. What does water going through the dam make? E page 11
