List of Sketches for Winthrop Fleet Book This volume is intended to cover all those who came in the Winthrop Fleet in 1630, along with others who were connected with the Winthrop Fleet. Not all of those who arrived in New England in 1630 are included in this volume, and some who came in 1629 are included. 1) The Massachusetts Bay Company began serious planning for the Winthrop Fleet early in 1629. As a result, the Company sent a number of immigrants to New England in 1629, to prepare for the arrival of the larger contingent in 1630. This included three ministers, a number of lay leaders, and many servants. These immigrants will be included in the Winthrop Fleet volume. 2) Even as the Massachusetts Bay Company began to take over the settlement of this part of New England, the West Country organizers continued to be active and to send settlers. In particular, the passengers on the Mary & John are not considered part of the Winthrop Fleet proper, and are reserved for further study on another occasion. 3) Likewise, there are several individuals who first appear in Salem and also north of the Merrimack in 1630, whose origins in England are as yet unknown, and who have no obvious connection with the Winthrop Fleet. Many of these are probably West Countrymen as well, and will be grouped with the Mary & John passengers. 4) Although we believe the list presented here to be essentially complete, there will undoubtedly be a few changes to the list as work proceeds. Some of the First Residences require some explanation. Medford refers to Mathew Cradock s farm, also known as Mystic. Lynn refers to Nahant Neck and the adjacent mainland. Neither Medford nor Lynn was a properly established town in 1630, but were areas to which servants were sent in 1629 and 1630 by the leading members of the Massachusetts Bay Company, mostly to establish herds of cattle to support the expected immigrants. The category Did not come refers to servants who were hired in England in 1629 by the Company, but for whom there is no record in New England.
