SERIAN WILD WARRIORS FITNESS SPECIAL MASAI MARA, KENYA 7 nights Serian ALEX WALKER S SERIAN An intimate collection of charismatic bush camps in East Africa
Experience the program that keeps Masai warriors at their peak fitness to protect their clans and livestock from predation and tribal warfare. You will notice that there is not an ounce of fat on a Masai warrior. They have this very casual lope to their walk, one that requires little to no energy, but try and keep up with them. It is your equivalent to a power walk covering long distances and keeping your speed and gait consistent and your heart rate constant. Most of the time you will have to run to keep up with them. This regimen combined with a high protein diet sheds pounds and keeps you fighting fit! [ I NI Z Q [ ) [ M ZQ I V V M \ s _ [ M Z Q I V V M \
This fitness programme consists of long daily walks every morning, up an escarpment, along it and down along the Mara River back to camp before mid-day with a breakfast break en route. This will take about five hours in total. After a leisurely lunch you will relax, have massages do some stretching and take a well deserved nap. After tea a game drive to see the abundant wildlife that surrounds the area.
Working with qualified instructors, your courses will be developed to work with you no matter what your level of fitness. Your trainer will always get you limbered up with stretching exercises to get you well loosened up before the walk and Yoga workshops will also be included into your fitness week every day. Our courses will keep you motivated and make you reach your goals while leaving you feeling energised and healthy. This programme is for all levels of fitness. You do not need to be an Olympian to benefit from this challenge, it is not a boot camp and is meant to be enjoyable not a misery. All levels will be categorised at the beginning and taken into consideration.
One challenge set will be a timed exercise everyday up the escarpment. Everyday we want to see you take minutes off your original time. The climb starts straight out of camp, so the terrain inclines immediately you leave for the walk, till you get to the top of the escarpment. It is about an 800 foot elevation, starting at 5,500 ft above sea level. This exercise will get your cardio really pumping and you will feel your fitness progressing on a daily basis. Once you have reached the top, it is a undulating walk through beautiful country, stopping to watch zebra and giraffe on the way.
A point will be reached where you will start to descend down the escarpment where we will stop and have a healthy breakfast and a stretch before continuing down to the river. There are gully s and sand rivers to be crossed, each one having it s own fun challenges, which will put your balancing and climbing skills to the test. The essence of this program is having fun while getting fit. Everyone has his or her own limits and we respect that. This is by no means a military selection exercise. We want you to enjoy being out in the wild and not seeing the beautiful landscapes and wildlife through tear filled exhausted eyes!
There are the Masai Olympics to compete in. This is a challenging but fun event, one which the Masai love to compete in Spear throwing, rungu (a Masai war club) throwing, bow and arrow shooting and plenty other fun activities that will have you all fully embracing the Masai culture and colorful sense of humor. All of you will be measured for a pair of Masai rubber sandals, made out of car tyres. We call these sandals Thousand Milers for obvious reasons. Walking in these sandals encourages proper walking posture and exercises your calf muscles. You long walks will be in your hiking boots but around camp you will be encouraged to wear the sandals, you will be amazed the difference they make.
As you will be in perhaps the richest wildlife area in the world, you will have plenty of opportunity to get out there on foot, and in a specially prepared safari vehicle to see this spectacle. Every day you will get time out to enjoy this and take great pictures as well. There will always be John Moller, Alex Walker or Adrian Allen, all experienced professional safari guides in camp to walk you during your hikes and take you out on daily safaris. They are also photographers so will be able to lend you useful tips to get the best results out of your safari pictures. You will always be accompanied by either of them depending on their rotation. They are all very fit and great company, recognized as some of Africa s finest guides you will leave having learned from the best, rich in local knowledge and wildlife habits. They love the wild and are passionate about every aspect of it. We all look forward to being part of a positive adventure and change in your lives.
