Brevard Tornados Men s Basketball at No. 2 Lincoln Memorial Wednesday, January 28, 2015-8:00 p.m. Harrogate, Tenn. (Tex Turner Arena) 8-10 (6-6 SAC) 18-0 (12-0 SAC) QUICK HITS TODAY S MATCHUP 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Brevard has now won five of its last six games, its most successful stretch since winning seven of eight from Nov. 29, 2010 through Jan. 15, 2011. Of Brevard s eight victories this season, six have been one-possession games and only one has come by more than six points. Brevard is 7-2 in games decided by six points or fewer. Those seven wins have come by a total of 20 points. Only a 12- point win over Catawba on January 10 came by more than six points. Brevard s five turnovers against Wingate on Saturday were its fewest in a game since committing four in a 78-76 loss at Limestone on Nov. 27, 2010. Lincoln Memorial is the highest-ranked team Brevard has ever beaten. The Tornados took down undefeated No. 5 LMU 82-77 on Feb. 16, 2011. According to available records, Brevard is 0-8 all-time in Harrogate. Only the second meeting, a 59-56 LMU win on Jan. 12, 2008, had a margin of less than eight points. Three LMU wins over BC at Tex Turner Arena have come by at least 24 points and six have been by double digits. ATHLETIC MEDIA RELATIONS Brevard SID... Brevard at No. 2 Lincoln Memorial Last Meeting: No. 14 Lincoln Memorial 101, Brevard 93 Last Meeting in Harrogate: Same Brevard enters its toughest matchup of the season playing its best brand of basketball in nearly half a decade as the Tornados travel to one of Division II s finest basketball facilities to take on perennial powerhouse Lincoln Memorial. The hosts enter tonight s matchup with a gaudy No. 2 national ranking in the NABC Coaches Poll, widely considered the most authoritative Division II ranking, although the first-year Division II Media Poll tabbed the Railsplitters in the No. 1 position last week before dropping them to No. 2 this week. The Railsplitters are the class of the Southeast Region, sporting an unblemished record well past the season s halfway mark and are on their way to their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. In its previous four trips, however, LMU has failed to advance past the Regional Semifinal round. Lincoln Memorial is one of the nation s best defensive teams. The Railsplitters lead the nation in field goal percentage defense (36.5) and are second in defending shots beyond the arc (25.6 percent). They also rank fourth nationally in field goal percentage (52.0) and are third in three-point shooting (43.8 percent). Conversely, Brevard struggles on the defensive end. The Tornados rank in the bottom 10 nationally by allowing opponents to shoot 40.4 percent from long range and are 279th out of 294 Division II teams with a field goal percentage defense of 48.4. Keeping Lincoln Memorial from a characteristically efficient shooting performance will be key in Brevard s efforts to pull the monumental upset. The Tornados, who play the nation s 93rd-toughest schedule according to BennettRank, have won five of their last six games for the first time since winning seven of eight over four years ago. In one week, Brevard has vaulted from a tie for ninth in the league standings into a three-way tie for fifth and have proven themselves legitimate contenders for a SAC Tournament berth. With Brevard s 6-1 record in one-possession games, including three such wins on the road, the Tornados have the requisite experience to pull out a close victory should the game come down to the final moments. ABOUT LMU SAC UPDATE NATIONAL UPDATE The Railsplitters are currently ranked No. 2 in both the Division II Media Poll, which is voted on by D-II SIDs, and the NABC Coaches Poll. LMU and UIndy are the only remaining unbeaten Division II teams. The Railsplitters are first nationally in field goal percentage defense (36.5), second in three-point field goal percentage defense (25.6), third in three-point field goal percentage (43.8), and fourth in field goal percentage (52.0). LMU has competed in four straight NCAA Tournaments but has never advanced to the Regional Final (Sweet 16) in school history. ABOUT BREVARD If the season ended today, Brevard would be the No. 7 seed in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament after being picked ninth in the preseason poll. Brevard ranks in the bottom 10 nationally in three-point field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to connect on 40.4 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc. Darius Moose and Trevon Shaw rank third and sixth in the SAC with 17.6 and 16.9 points per game. Phil Wallace is sixth in the SAC with a free throw percentage of 86.7. Brevard is 6-6 in league play despite being outscored by an average of 6.3 points per SAC game. LMU is ranked #1 in the latest NCAA Division II Media Poll. LMU is ranked #2 in the latest NABC Division II Poll. BREVARD S LAST GAME LMU S LAST GAME THE LAST MEETING BREVARD 76, WINGATE 73 January 24, 2015 BREVARD, N.C. The Brevard College men s basketball team once again found a way to win a tight contest on Saturday afternoon, propelling the Tornados to their fifth win in the last six games and into a three-way tie for fifth place in the South Atlantic Conference standings. Saturday s victim was Wingate (10-8, 7-5 SAC), which had won its last three games and came into the day locked in a three-way tie for second place in the league. But the Bulldogs fell to Brevard (8-10, 6-6) by a score of 76-73 in another dramatic win that gave the Tornados their sixth straight win in games decided by three points or less. Key in Brevard s victory was its ability to take care of the basketball and score off of Wingate s miscues. The Tornados gave the ball away just five times, their fewest turnovers since a loss to Limestone in November 2010, while converting 14 takeaways into 15 points. The Tornados also shot 78.3 percent at the charity stripe, led by Phil Wallace s 7-for-7 effort. Wallace has now made 39 of his 45 free throw attempts on the year, giving him the highest single-season free throw percentage in Brevard NCAA era history. Miles Leathers pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds in the win, none more important than the last. With Brevard clinging to a 72-71 advantage as the clock ticked below 25 seconds, Leathers came down with the ball off of Isiah Cureton s errant three-point attempt. He then surveyed the court and immediately rocketed the ball to Darius Moose, who had sprinted back toward the basket as soon as the ball left Cureton s hand. Moose completed the layup just as a Bulldog defender arrived to attempt the block and the Brevard lead stretched back to three with 19 seconds to go. Wingate s Xavier Griffin sliced to the hoop moments later to cut the lead to 74-73, but a pair of Wallace free throws and a Jaylon Debardlabon rebound off of a final three-point attempt sealed Brevard s third straight victory. The game was in doubt for much of its latter stages, however. The Bulldogs slowly crept back into the game throughout the entire second half before finally pulling ahead for the first time with just over seven minutes to play. The Bulldogs enjoyed their largest lead at the 2:42 mark of the second half after a pair of Cureton free throws put the visitors in front 69-65. Leathers brought the Tornados a point closer at the free throw line before Moose tied the score at 69 with his second triple of the game. After Wingate missed a three-point attempt on the other end, Alex Moe provided the fourth and final lead change of the contest with another shot from behind the arc, giving Brevard a 72-69 advantage. The Tornados went on an 11-4 run over the final 2:30 and held Wingate to just two field goals in the last 4:18 as the Bulldogs missed six of their final eight shots. Wingate s loss spoiled spectacular days by Cureton and Ryan Daye. Cureton finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, while Daye poured in a game-high 26 on 8-for-14 from the floor. Trevon Shaw led the Tornados with 24 points, with Moe chipping in 12 of his own. With 73 points in the losing effort, the Bulldogs broke a string of seven consecutive contests in which the team had failed to surpass 70 points. The last time Wingate accomplished the feat was in a December 20 loss to Anderson by an identical 76-73 score to today s game. The Tornados earned the win largely without the services of Darius Moose, who was credited with just 24 minutes of action. The conference s fourth-leading scorer was forced to the bench for the final 13 minutes of the first half after picking up three early fouls and played the majority of the second half with four. He tallied a pair of assists on the day, moving him into a tie with Gaither Hendrix for third in the school s NCAA era in assists. No. 2 LINCOLN MEMORIAL 86, CATAWBA 76 January 24, 2015 HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) scored 15 second-half points and Lorenza Ross (Savannah, Ga.) compiled 19 points and nine assists as the No. 1/2 Railsplitters (18-0, 12-0 SAC) weathered a sluggish start to knock off the Catawba Indians (7-10, 5-7 SAC) 86-76 in South Atlantic Conference men s hoops action on early Saturday evening at Tex Turner Arena. Lincoln Memorial extended the nation s longest winning streak to 18 games while using some late free throws to capture its 10th straight win by double figures. The Railsplitters led for nearly 80 percent of the contest but it was rarely easy as Catawba made constant runs to avoid Lincoln Memorial gaining too much separation at any juncture. The Indians finished shooting 40.3 percent from the field, ending the Railsplitters streak of five consecutive games holding opponents under the 40-percent threshold. Catawba also kept themselves in the game with a near perfect 17-for-21 effort at the charity stripe. Lincoln Memorial, meanwhile, shot better than 50 percent for the sixth straight game, knocking down 30 of its 59 shot attempts. The free throw line proved troublesome for the Railsplitters, though, as the home team went 22-for-36 in the game and missed eight free throws in the second half alone. Luquon Choice led the Railsplitters with 20 points - his sixth 20- point performance of the season - on 6-of-12 shooting and a 4-of-7 mark from three-point territory. He scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half while adding three rebounds and a steal. Lorenza Ross posted a near triple-double with 19 points, nine assists and five rebounds, finishing the contest 8-for-12 from the field. Gerel Simmons (Accokeek, Md.) scored 14 points - bolstered by a 10-for-16 mark at the free throw line - in 23 minutes off the bench. Dorian Pinson (Greenville, S.C.) filled out the stat sheet with 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals before fouling out after 28 minutes of action. The Railsplitters missed their first seven shots of the game until Keenan Peterson (College Park, Ga.) ended the drought with a tip-in at the 16:07 mark. Thankfully, Catawba was almost equally as slow out of the gate as the Railsplitters trailed just 4-2 following Peterson s bucket. The Indians assumed a 10-5 lead on a jumper by Jameel Taylor at 13:27, but the Railsplitters were promptly awoken from their slumber following that basket. The next 4:41 saw the Railsplitters author a 14-0 run, going 6-for-7 from the field over that stretch while forcing the Indians into five straight missed shots. Curtis McMillion (Fayetteville, N.C.) capped the run with a layup at 7:57, giving the Railsplitters a 21-13 cushion. As they did all afternoon, the Indians fought back, scoring 10 of the next 15 points to trim the deficit to 26-23 on two Jerrin Morrison free throws at 3:48. Back-to-back buckets from Tim Pierce (Albany, Ga.) extended the Railsplitters advantage to 33-24 with less than a minute remaining in the half, but Vismantas Marijosius earned an oldfashioned three-pointer with 25 ticks left to cut LMU s halftime lead to 33-27. The second half essentially played out the same, with the Railsplitters edging the Indians by four points (53-49). But one particular run ultimately made the difference for the home team. Pinson rolled in a layup with 14:57 left to make it a 10-point lead for the Railsplitters, but Jerrin Morrison and Jameel Taylor bagged back-to-back jumpers to cut the deficit to 46-40 at the 14-minute mark. The Railsplitters took over control of the contest from there, bleeding Catawba dry with a 17-6 flurry over the ensuing passage of play to extend the lead to 63-46. Choice s layup with 9:31 remaining concluded the rally and provided the Railsplitters with their largest lead of the game. The Indians continued to plug away down the stretch but that 17-point hole proved too much to overcome. A Troy Warren layup at 6:25 pushed LMU s lead back into single digits at 65-56, but the Railsplitters answered with a 7-0 run, punctuated by another Choice triple with five minutes left. Four straight free throws by Taylor brought the Indians to within nine at 78-69 with 2:08 remaining, but the Railsplitters were able to do just enough at the charity stripe to stiff arm the Indians. Catawba was paced by KJ Arrington, who led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Arrington added nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks to his stat ledger. Jerrin Morrison poured in 16 points but he needed 17 shots to accumulate that mark. Ben Sealey scored 12 points, while Vismantas Marijosius and Jameel Taylor contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench. The Railsplitters narrowly won the battle of the boards 42-39 and dominated the paint to the tone of a 48-30 scoring advantage inside the square. The Railsplitters assisted on 13 of their 30 baskets and committed only 11 turnovers. The home team turned 14 Catawba turnovers into 16 transition points. Lincoln Memorial earned its fourth straight win over the Indians, while winning its seventh straight head-to-head meeting against Catawba in Tex Turner Arena. No. 14 LINCOLN MEMORIAL 101, BREVARD 93 February 19, 2014 HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Brevard College men s basketball team (4-19, 4-15 SAC) narrowly missed upsetting No. 14 Lincoln Memorial (21-2, 17-2 SAC) on Wednesday night in a 101-93 loss in South Atlantic Conference action from Tex Turner Arena. The Tornados tied the game at 93-93 with 1:05 to play when Darius Moose hit his first free throw shot after being fouled by LMU s Paul Woodson. Moose s second foul shot was off the mark, and the Railsplitters ended the game with eight straight to points to avoid the upset. The Tornados trailed by six at halftime but grabbed the lead midway through the second on a Dominique Pickett jumper at the 10:13 mark. Jake Pifer made it a 79-76 advantage on a layup with 9:35 remaining. The Railsplitter answered Pifer s basket with seven unanswered points to go in front 83-79. Although BC took a one-point lead on a Moose three-point play with 3:18 to go, LMU proved to be too much down the stretch. Moose carried the Tornados with 19 points in the first half on his way to 27 points and four assists, while both Pickett and Alex Moe netted 21 points for the Tornados. The duo combined for nine rebounds, and Moe s 21 points was a season high. Miles Leathers turned in a balanced stat line, going for 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.
