All Times Local To Site GOING TO THE DANCE: Riding a seven-game winning streak, with five of those victories coming away from home, the Seattle University men s basketball team heads to Arcata, Calif., for the NCAA Division II Men s Basketball Tournament West Regional, hosted by top seed and CCAA champion Humboldt State. This will be the first appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament for Seattle University and the first national postseason game for the school since the NAIA District I Playoffs in 1994. With three victories in four days, the Redhawks will clinch a spot in the Elite Eight in Springfield, Mass. LAST GAME: Seattle University clinched the GNAC s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Men s Basketball Tournament with an 82-68 victory over Western Oregon on March 3 at the New PE Building in Monmouth, Ore. Junior Ryan Coldren, playing in his home state, led Seattle University with a career-high 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. He made two three-pointers and hit three key free throws at the end of the first half to give Seattle a four-point halftime lead. Besides Coldren s scoring output, Seattle s bench outscored Western Oregon s reserves, 41-12. Chris Gweth, also playing in his native state, scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Travis Welt also made a major impact off the bench, contributing seven points, five rebounds, and four blocked shots in 17 minutes of action. Among Seattle s starters, Leigh Swanson scored 11 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. The seniors also made a contribution, as Sam Kirby earned nine points and five rebounds, David White had eight points and six rebounds, and Ryan Webb added seven points, five rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Western Oregon came within one point two minutes into the second half, but Seattle responded with a 17-6 scoring run to expand its lead into double digits. The Redhawks shot 56.3 percent from the field in the second half while holding Western Oregon to 29.6 percent field goal shooting after halftime.

THE LEADER OF THE REDHAWKS: Joe Callero is in his sixth season as head coach of the Seattle men s basketball team. Callero brings a 77-87 record at Seattle University, a 99-112 career four-year school record, and a 229-161 career coaching record (including his time at Highline CC) into the tournament. He has guided Seattle University to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 37 years. A HISTORIC SEASON: The Seattle University basketball team has reached some milestones it hadn t achieved in many years. The seven-game winning streak the Redhawks are presently on is the longest since the 1984-85 season, when Seattle compiled winning streaks of nine games and eight games. That was also the last season Seattle earned as many victories as it has this season. The Redhawks have also earned back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 37 years. Seattle won 11 conference games this season, the most since joining the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in 2001-02. This will be the first NCAA postseason appearance for Seattle University since 1969, when Weber State earned a 75-73 victory. The Redhawks will be looking for their first NCAA Tournament victory since defeating Oregon State in 1964. GNAC POSTSEASON HONORS: Seniors Ryan Webb and Sam Kirby have earned Second Team All-GNAC honors, while David White and Leigh Swanson earned Honorable Mention All-GNAC status. With four players recognized by the conference coaches, Seattle University had the most of any school in the conference. Webb, a three-time GNAC Player of the Week, finished the regular season third on the team in scoring and rebounding with 10.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Kirby finished the regular season as the Redhawks leading scorer with 13.3 points per game, including 20 or more points in five of the first seven games of the season. One of two Redhawks to start every game this season, White is averaging 9.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game heading into the postseason, leading the team with a.560 field goal percentage. Swanson is averaging 12.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and shooting 51.7 percent from the field. LENDING A HELPING HAND: Ryan Webb has 171 assists this season, the fourth-highest single-season total in Seattle University history, and 536 career assists, second on the school s all-time assists list. 2006-07 SUPERLATIVES INDIVIDUAL HIGHS Points... 27, Sam Kirby, 11/18/06 Rebounds...14, David White, 2/24/07 Assists...13, Ryan Webb, 12/30/06...13, Ryan Webb, 11/18/06 Steals...6, Ryan Webb, 12/29/06... 6, Sam Kirby, 11/25/06 Free Throws...8, Ryan Webb, 1/27/07 3-Pointers... 7, Sam Kirby, 11/18/06 Blocks...5, David White, 2/17/07...5, David White, 2/10/07 TEAM HIGHS Points...91 vs. Ashland 11/18/06 FG Made...33 at Saint Martin s 2/22/07...33 vs. Seattle Pacific 1/20/07...33 vs. Dixie State 12/29/06 FG %... 59.1% at Northwest Nazarene 1/4/07 3-Pointers...13 vs. Ashland 11/18/06 3PT %... 53.8% at Northwest Nazarene 1/4/07 FT Made... 23 vs. Central Washington 3/1/07 FT %...92.3% vs. Alaska Fairbanks 1/25/07 Rebounds...49 vs. Northwest Nazarene 2/24/07 Assists...27 vs. Dixie State 12/29/06 Steals...18 vs. Dixie State 12/29/06 Blocks...9 at Alaska Fairbanks 2/17/07 TEAM LOWS Points...47 at Chico State 12/22/06 FG Made...18 at Chico State 12/22/06...18 at Hawaii Pacific 12/14/06 FG %...31.0% at Chico State 12/22/06 3-Pointers...1 at Alaska Fairbanks 2/17/07...1 at Chico State 12/22/06 3PT %...6.7% at Chico State 12/22/06 FT Made...7 at Alaska Fairbanks 2/17/07...7 vs. Cheyney 12/30/06 FT %... 44.4% at Metro State 11/22/06 Rebounds...23 at Seattle Pacific 2/3/07 Assists...4 at Alaska Fairbanks 2/17/07 Steals...2 vs. Northwest Nazarene 2/24/07...2 vs. Western Oregon 2/8/07 Blocks...0 at Northwest Nazarene 1/4/07

GNAC WEEKLY HONORS: Four players on Seattle University s roster combined for seven GNAC Player of the Week awards this season. Sam Kirby started off the season with a solid performance at the Elgin Baylor Classic to earn the honor on Nov. 20. He played well in Seattle s victories at BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific to earn his second weekly honor of the season on Dec. 18. After the Redhawks won their conference opener at Northwest Nazarene, Ryan Webb was named GNAC Co-Player of the Week on Jan. 8. Two weeks later, David White picked up the recognition after scoring 30 points and pulling down 22 rebounds in two victories. Webb then earned the honor in two consecutive weeks (Feb. 19 & 26), first for leading Seattle to a sweep of the Alaska schools on the road, then for helping the Redhawks defeat Saint Martin s and Northwest Nazarene. Leigh Swanson earned a share of the weekly honor on March 5 after helping his team earn a share of the GNAC title with wins over Central Washington and Western Oregon. SCOUTING THE REGION: This season, Seattle University was 4-1 record against teams in the West Regional coming into this weekend s competition. The Redhawks split the season series with fourth seed Seattle Pacific, defeated seventh seed BYU-Hawaii 76-65 on Dec. 12, and swept eighth seed Alaska Anchorage. Top seed Humboldt State holds an 11-4 series advantage over Seattle. These teams met last season as members of the GNAC, with Seattle University winning at the Connolly Center, 77-67, and Humboldt State earning the win at the East Gym, 107-80. Second seed Cal State San Bernardino defeated Seattle, 99-55, at the 2000 Seattle Pacific/Vitamilk Tip-Off Classic, the only meeting between the two schools. Seattle faced third seed Cal Poly Pomona, its first round opponent, in last season s Elgin Baylor Classic at the Connolly Center, with the Redhawks defeating the Broncos, 79-72. Cal Poly Pomona holds a 2-1 series edge over Seattle. During the 2002-03 season, Seattle lost at fifth seed Grand Canyon, 78-77, in the only meeting so far between the two schools. A BLOCK PARTY: With two blocks against Central Washington last Thursday, David White set a new school record for blocked shots in a single season. He has 55 blocked shots coming into the postseason. Over just two seasons, White has 80 blocked shots at Seattle, third on the school s all-time blocked shot list and just two behind Jeffrey McDaniel in second place. SEASON IN REVIEW: The Seattle University basketball team started off with victories over Sonoma State (68-55) and Ashland University (91-81) at the Elgin Baylor Classic. The Redhawks then embarked on a Thanksgiving week trip to Colorado, losing to Metro State in overtime (84-76) before defeating Colorado Christian (83-79) and Regis University (54-51) on back-to-back days. The Redhawks faced three Hawaii schools from the PacWest Conference in a row. After defeating Hawaii-Hilo at the Connolly Center (80-63), Seattle went to the Hawaiian Islands and defeated BYU-Hawaii (76-65) and Hawaii Pacific (53-50). With a 7-1 start to the season, Seattle was ranked 13th in the NABC Division II Coaches Poll. Seattle lost two of its next three games to finish the non-conference season 8-3. The GNAC season started with a victory at Northwest Nazarene (76-63). However, the team would fall to 1-2 in the conference with home losses to Western Washington (86-80) and Saint Martin s (74-64). Seattle recovered, traveling to Central Washington and defeating the Wildcats in overtime (75-71). In front of a loud and involved capacity crowd at the Connolly Center, the Redhawks defeated crosstown rival Seattle Pacific, 86-68. The Alaska schools came to town for two tight ballgames, with Alaska Fairbanks winning on a last-possession shot (57-56) and Seattle doing the same against Alaska Anchorage (65-64). Losses at Seattle Pacific (98-74) and to Western Oregon (69-67) put the Redhawks at 4-5 in the conference with a four-game road swing looming and several teams ahead of them in the standings. Western Washington (76-61). Alaska Anchorage (69-66). Alaska Fairbanks (50-48). Saint Martin s (85-72). Four road games, four victories. Meanwhile, the teams ahead of Seattle were beating each other, letting the Redhawks back into the race for the conference title. The game against Northwest Nazarene was another close one at home, but this time Seattle pulled out a 67-63 overtime win. A convincing 88-73 victory over Central Washington in the home finale set Seattle up with a chance to earn a share of the conference title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Western Oregon threatened, but Seattle used a 17-6 scoring run in the second half to pull away with an 82-68 victory over the Wolves. With the win, Seattle was GNAC Co- Champions and NCAA Tournament bound!
