REGULARS Commodore s Message Dear Members, The club kick-started this year with a blast of sailing activities, starting with the 3rd edition of the DSP SAFYC Sailing League in January. A total of 102 sailors of different boat classes participated in the event. It was uplifting to see the sailors so determined to accomplish all races. A sincere thank you to Dinghy Sailing Products for their continuous support in making this event even more successful. Followed by Horsburgh Challenge which was conducted in February. In its 12 years of running, this regatta has not cease to challenge the sailors as they brave the passage to Horsburgh lighthouse. Congratulations to the participants for a job well done and thank you once again for making the regatta a success. It couldn t have been done without the race committee, the organizing body, our sponsors, and the sailors themselves. In the following two months ahead, the Club continues to line-up both social and sailing activities for our Members. In March, we invite Members to bring their family and join us to celebrate Easter. For those who wish to unwind, we invite you to join the Good Friday Cruise to Telok Sengat on 25th 27th March. If you are up for some competition, don t miss our 13th SAFYC Regatta on 16th 17th April for Dinghy and 23rd-24th April for Optimist. The running of these events displayed the club s effort & commitment to engaging members and creates vibrancy within the club. I wish to assure our Members that the club will continue to strive hard to achieve the visions shared during the Townhall Session on 19 February, in order to rejuvenate SAF Yacht Club from the consolidation. The Review Teams are committed to work in the best interest of our members and working earnestly to come up with options and answers to Members. The team s immediate focus will be to consolidate at Sembawang Clubhouse and assist members for smooth transition to Sembawang Clubhouse. I thank all members for riding through the waves with the club and hope you would continue to enjoy your time at the club with us. RADM Lew Chuen Hong COMMODORE 1

Highlights DSP - SAFYC Sailing League 1/3 The third edition of the DSP SAFYC Sailing League kicked off on a Saturday afternoon of 23 January at Changi Clubhouse. This being the first regatta of the year, we are excited seeing eager familiar faces and some new ones participating the race which is proudly sponsored by Dinghy Sailing Products! We saw a total of 102 sailors of different boat classes sailing under the scorching heat, navigating their way to accomplish all races. The first day of the race started with the first warning signal at 1300hrs. The weather was perfect for sailing with good winds. However, it was delayed on the second day as the wind s direction was inconsistent. With choppy currents and a strong breeze that caused some boats to capsize and lose track, our sailors were able to finish the race. Gale-force winds toppled over the boats a challenge for the sailors! Keelboats cruising through the waves as well! Byte, Laser Radial, and both Optimist Gold and Silver fleets managed to finish 7 races while the Keelboat class finished 4. Thereafter the race, parents and sailors gathered at the Straits View for the prize presentation! Race winners received trophies and medals while our lucky draw winners won a BlockUp! Sunblock lotion, a pair of Sunglasses, and a DSP voucher! 8

Get to Know Us Get to Know Our New Members Raymond Ow Special Term Membership Roheed Raj Singh NSF Term Membership An engineer and an avid angler, Mr Ow joined us on December last year as a Special Term Member. Read on to know more about him and his opinions regarding his stay with us! Q: So Mr Ow, how did you know about SAF Yacht Club? A: I ve known the Club a long time ago. It was introduced to me by my friends but that time, I haven t made my mind to join as a member. Q: What made you decide to join us? A: Since I don t sail, I joined mainly for fishing at the Changi Clubhouse jetty. It would be good if Sembawang Clubhouse would have a fishing area as well. Q: How do you find your stay with us thus far? A: So far so good! The staff are friendly and professional. I don t use much of the facilities though but overall, it s all right. Q: What do you enjoy doing during your free time? A: My hobby is purely fishing and I ve been doing it for a long time. I go fish with my friends at the eastern parts of Singapore or west Malaysia. I also enjoy traveling with my family on holidays once in a while. We go to nearby places such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Q: If you won the lottery, what would you do first with the money? A: I d buy a house. That s my priority. Currently serving the country under the Navy, Mr Singh joined SAF Yacht Club as a Special Term Member. Read on to know more about his views with us so far! Q: How did you come across SAF Yacht Club? A: The Club is just nearby my camp so I ve known it for quite some time. Q: What made you decide to join as member? A: The Sembawang Clubhouse is just right behind my camp so it s very convenient for me location-wise. I visit the Club usually thrice a week. I am also planning on taking a PPCDL course! Q: And so far, how do you find your stay with us? A: I have been a member only recently and so far, the club is okay and the staff are friendly! My stay has been fine since I joined. Q: Can you share with us some of your hobbies and interests? A: I am into sports especially soccer! I also caught a new hobby which is diving as I am a diver in the Navy. Q: Where would you likely spend your ideal holiday destination and why? A: I wish I can travel as much. Maybe one day because right now, I m still in NS. I want to explore Southeast Asia first and visit the hotspots. I want to do water sports, check out the nightlife, see more of nature especially the mountains. 15

Get To Know Us Get To Know Our Promising Sailors Alongside with his brothers, Gregory is to watch out for in the sailing arena. Now at age 9, Gregory strives to be a better sailor through participating in regattas and continuous training with his coaches. Read on to find out more about our young sailor! Gregory (left) together with his big brothers Matthias (centre) and Aloysius (right) Name Lin Tze Jay Gregory Birthday 13 Feb 2007 School St Hilda s Primary School Hobbies: Soccer, Badminton watching TV Favourite Food: Japanese Ramen Fish Ball Noodle Words For a Fellow Sailor: Never give up! Q: How did your sailing journey come about? A: My brothers introduced me to sailing. Back then, I liked to help them pull and wash their boats. In primary 1, I joined GKA programme and found it very fun and challenging. Q: Glad to hear that you kick-start sailing through GKA! What can you say about your time with SAFYC? A: The SAFYC coaches and training squad are tough but fun to be with. I have learnt a lot from them. Q: What s the favourite aspect you like about sailing? A: I enjoy training with my sailing friends, both at sea and on land. I like going to regattas to compete with my other sailing friends. Q: Could you tell us about your most memorable sailing experience? A: It was during last year CSC Regatta. It was my first time competing in monsoon season. There are many days with rain, strong winds and current. I sailed how my coaches taught me and won the regatta! Q: What about your worst experience? A: It happened in one of early regattas. I was trying to hike but I missed the hiking strap and fell into the water just when the race was about to start. I panicked and struggled to get back on. Then, the fleet started before I could get into my boat, and I did not do well for that race. I learnt to keep calm and stay focus from this experience. Q: What other sports are you good at besides sailing? A: I enjoy badminton and playing soccer. Q: How do you manage it around your curriculum of studies? A: Fortunately, I had the support from my parents and grandparents. My brothers also guide and share on how to manage my time between sailing and studies. I try to finish my school work and revision during my spare time outside of my training days. Q: Would you plan to see sailing as your career in the future? A: As of the moment, I don t know yet. But I want to do well in my sailing and studies. Q: Who are your mentors in sailing? A: I have learnt a lot from Coach Xiao Dong and Coach Bryan, and my brothers who share with me on their experiences! Q: Any personal goals in terms of sailing currently? A: I aim to top my age group in Gold Fleet, and help to achieve success for my school during the Inter- School Regatta. Q: If you weren t a sailor, how different would your life be today? A: I enjoy talking to my brothers about sailing. I think my life would be boring if I am not sailing. Q: So far, who is your toughest competitor? A: I think it would be myself. Q: Lastly, if you found a genie and you are given 3 wishes, what would they be and why? A: First, I hope to have a brand new boat. I enjoy Japanese food, and I hope to have that every day! Can I have another 3 more wishes? 17

Highlights Rada Muja Selangor International Regatta 2015 Three overnight passage races, 260 miles in total, plus 3 days of harbour racing in Penang and Langkawi, the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta is one of the most anticipated keelboat races past the tropical islands of Malaysia. Millennium 2 with skipper Ken Yap, and crew members Didier Pernet, Tony Hancock, Allan Koh, and Kenneth Teo took part on a voyage from Port Klang to Langkawi on 20th 28th November 2015. Here s an exclusive peak on their first-hand experience authored by Didier Pernet. Port Klang Penang The journey from Pangkor to Penang took 18 hours. On our arrival at Penang, we were welcomed by pink dolphins! And again, a storm was approaching with strong lightning. One boat got stuck on the finish line so we did our 2nd rescue battery transfer. Race 3 was a bay race. Unfortunately, it was modified. The 1st buoy was moved towards local boats during the race and then the route was shortened as the wind diminished. We were hoping to do 3-4 loops but since there s no wind, we only did 1 turn. At night, prize presentation was held at Khoo Kongsi. There was lion dance and a typical buffet dinner satay, laksa, and curry! The regatta s opening ceremony kicked off with a fantastic belly dancing performance at Royal Selangor Yacht Club. We saw blue skies with inconsistent winds during race 1. Just right after leaving the jetty, we rescued ReKering Dream as her propeller stopped by what we discovered later to be a big bunch of branches. Pangkor The weather was nice as we were anchoring in Pangkor clear skies, green sea, and bright sun, with light winds. Races in Pangkor were very relaxing. There have to be 2 of use to control Millennium 2. Since there were 3 of us initially, we took turns in working every 4 hours hence, our 2-hour sleep. 18

Highlights Rada Muja Selangor International Regatta 2015 Langkawi We were then joined by 2 more crews Allan and Kenneth on our journey to Langkawi. We left Penang on a sunny afternoon with a light west wind. At 7pm, it moved to north east, stronger and stronger, up to 25 knots. Tough, but so good for sailing. The regatta concluded with a superb swim, few more jugs, dances, and small falls in the pool for some! Another storm has approached again at night time. The winds were stronger and the waves higher it was very bad thus, a challenge to navigate. As the storm grew bigger, we suddenly heard Mayday! Mayday! from the radio. It was from Marik - one of our colleague s boat whose mast was broke. We rushed to help, hoping that the security boat would also join soon. After 8 hours of towing, at 1 hour from port, our engine suddenly stopped near big anchored ships. We quickly threw anchor. Meanwhile, the small motor of the towed boat restarted. They managed to go slowly to port and we went there sailing. By then the storm was even worse huge rain and wind was so strong. We got cold and soaked. Last leg in this bay race was a lovely race, especially the challenging last run to the finish line, side by side with Virgo! Out of all the races, this one was the best with just the right wind. We all truly had fun. Overall, it was a good regatta! The night race was particularly interesting as I haven t experienced it before. The last time Millennium 2 joined RMSIR, she wasn t able to finish. Now, we manage to complete all 6 races and we re all very happy. 19
