NOTES TO READERS

TRANSATLANTIC TRENDS 2004 TOPLINE DATA page 6 The summary topline report shows results for each of the 11 countries surveyed: USA FR = France GER = Germany UK= The United Kingdom IT = Italy NL = The Netherlands PL = Poland PT = Portugal SP= Spain SK = Slovakia TR = Turkey Results for Europe as a whole are also indicated. In order to compare with the results of 2003 and to take into consideration the addition of Spain, Slovakia and Turkey in this year s survey, there are 3 separate totals for the results of Europe: Europe 7: 2004 Results for Europe based on seven European countries: United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland and Portugal (also surveyed in 2003). Europe 10: 2004 Results for Europe based on the 10 European countries surveyed in 2004 (Europe 7 plus Slovakia, Spain and Turkey). Europe 9: 2004 Results for Europe based on the 9 European countries surveyed in 2004 (Europe 10 minus Turkey). The figures given for Europe are weighted on the basis of the adult population in each of the European countries. Where available, data from Transatlantic Trends 2003 and Worldviews 2002 are provided. For purposes of comparison, figures are shown below the 2004 corresponding figure in italic. All figures except for question 8 are expressed in percentage terms. Due to the rounding off of the results, in certain tables the figures representing a sum of results can differ by +/- one point compared to the actual sum of individual results. For the results based on the total sample in each of the eleven countries, one can say with 95% confidence that the margin of error attributable to sampling and other random effects is plus or minus three percentage points. For results based on the total European sample, the margin of error is plus or minus one percentage point.
