It will mark the second meeting of the season between the two schools; The Trojans earned an 83-58 victory over the Warhawks in Little Rock back on Dec. 1. The Trojans have now won five straight in the series and own a 13-8 all-time record against the Warhawks. The Warhawks are coming off a heartbreaking 76-73 loss at FIU on Saturday, their seventh in a row. ULM shot a blistering 70.4 percent (19-of-27) from the field in the second half and led by two with under a minute to play before FIU rallied for the victory. Junior Amos Olatayo netted a career-high 30 points against FIU on 12-of-18 shooting. It marked the first 30-point scoring game by a ULM player since 2011. Olatayo has now scored at least 21 points in three straight games. He ranks fourth in the Sun Belt in scoring with 15.9 points per game this season. Junior Jayon James also had a stellar night against FIU as he finished just one rebound shy of a triple-double with 11 points, nine rebounds and a career-high 15 assists. His 15 assists is the second most in school history, the most in the Sun Belt this season and tied for the fifth most in the NCAA this season. James now leads the Sun Belt and ranks 44th in the NCAA with an average of 5.3 assists per game. Sophomore Trent Mackey recorded his second 20-point game of the season with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting against FIU. Mackey knocked in five 3-pointers on the night, including four straight in the second half. Mackey ranks fourth in the Sun Belt and 30th nationally in 3-point percentage (.414) He also ranks fourth in the conference and 54th nationally in 3-point makes per game (2.6). The Warhawks are coming off a 76-73 loss at FIU on Saturday. UALR dropped a 70-66 decision at home to South Alabama on Saturday. STATS COMPARISON LAST GAME: FIU RECAP ULM dropped its seventh straight as FIU rallied in the final minute for a 76-73 victory over the Warhawks on Saturday. ULM led 73-71 following a transition layup from junior Amos Olatayo with just over a minute to play, but FIU responded with a three-point play by Malik Smith with 19 seconds remaining and a pair of free throws from Deric Hill with seven seconds remaining to earn the win. Olatayo finished with a career-high 30 points and eight rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. He finished 12-of-18 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Olatayo has now scored at least 21 points in three straight games and he has scored 20-plus points six times this season. Junior Jayon James finished just shy of a triple-double with 11 points, nine rebounds and a career-high 15 assists in 40 minutes. James 15 assists were the second most in school history and the most since Larry Saulters recorded 19 assists against Mississippi College during the 1969-70 season. It was also the most assists by a player in the Sun Belt this season and tied for the fifth most in the NCAA this season. Sophomore Trent Mackey recorded 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting for the Warhawks. Mackey knocked in five 3-pointers on the night, including four straight in the second half. He finished 6-of-7 from the field after halftime. ULM TRENDS ULM ranks 11th in the Sun Belt in scoring with an average of 59.6 points per game. The Warhawks are shooting 42.2 percent from the field, 34.1 percent from 3-point range and 57.6 percent from the free-throw line. James (6-6) is tied with Michael Carter-Williams as the tallest player in the country to average at least 5.0 assists per game. Sophomore Trent Mackey ranks second on the team in scoring with 10.8 points per game. With his 21 points against FIU, Mackey has now scored in double figures in three straight games. Junior Marcelis Hansberry has had the best offensive production of his career this season, averaging 7.5 points per game with seven double-digit scoring games. KEITH RICHARD HEAD COACH, THIRD SEASON Keith Richard is in his third season at the Warhawks head coach. He was named ULM s seventh men s basketball coach on April 22, 2010. Has compiled 163 victories in his 12th season as a head coach at ULM and Louisiana Tech. Richard is one of just two head coaches in school history -- joining Mike Vining -- to have also been a studentathlete and an assistant coach at ULM. He was with the Warhawks in both capacities for six of the program s seven NCAA Tournament appearances in the 1980s and early 1990s. He has completely rebuilt the program academically in his first two seasons. The team s Academic Progress Rate (APR) has increased dramatically in each of Richard s first two seasons. Served as the head coach at Louisiana Tech 1998-2007 and compiled a record of 150-117, the third-most wins in school history. In nine seasons, Richard had 11 players named all-conference, inlcuding three-time NCAA rebounding champion Paul Milsap, who was later drafted by the Utah Jazz. Guided Louisiana Tech to three 20-win seasons and NIT appearances in 2002 and 2006. Served as an assistant coach at LSU from 2008-10, where he helped the Tigers win the 2008-09 SEC regular-season championship and reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament. McCray has started 17 straight games at the point guard position for ULM and is averaging 7.7 points and 2.3 assists per game this season. McCray has scored in double-digits six times this season after notching double figures just three times in his first two seasons with the Warhawks. McCray also has six games with at least four assists this season. Junior Millaun Brown has come off the bench in back-to-back games after starting each of ULM s first 16 contests. Brown is averaging 5.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game and has scored in double-digits on three occasions this season. The Warhawks do not have a regular starter back from last season and returned just 28 percent of their scoring and 24 percent of their rebounding from a season ago. DOUBLE-DOUBLE TRACKER Jayon James ranks sixth in the Sun Belt with five double-doubles this season. He is the only ULM player with a double-double this season. James five double-doubles have come against Southeastern Louisiana (10 pts and 12 rbs), Southern (11 pts and 11 rbs), Florida Atlantic (26 pts and 10 rbs), North Texas (19 pts and 10 rbs) and FIU (11 pts and 15 assts). PREVIEWING UALR UALR enters play Thursday tied with Arkansas State for the top spot in the Sun Belt s West Division with a record of 8-5. The Trojans had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 70-66 loss at home to South Alabama on Saturday. The Trojans ranks sixth in the Sun Belt in scoring (67.2 ppg) and fourth in scoring defense (65.6 ppg). UALR is shooting 42.8 percent from the field, 34.9 percent from 3-point range and 67.2 percent from the free-throw line this season. Junior Will Neighbour leads the Trojans in scoring (11.4 ppg) and rebounding (7.0). Neighbour is shooting 47.2 percent from the field, 32.0 percent from 3-point range and 68.8 percent from the free-throw line. John Gillon chips in 10.1 points and 2.4 assists per game. Steve Shields hashad a successful stint at UALR as he embarks on his 10th season as the program s head coach. Shields -- who has an overall record of 161-137 at UALR -- guided the Trojans to the 2011 Sun Belt Tournament title and the school s first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1990. He was also named the Sun Belt s Coach of the Year in 2004. ULM-UALR SERIES UALR leads the all-time series 13-8 and the Trojans have won five straight in the series, including their 83-58 victory in Little Rock back in December. ULM is 4-5 against UALR in games played in Monroe. The Trojans defeated the Warhawks 72-51 last season in Monroe. LAST MEETING AGAINST UALR ULM hung tough in the first half, but UALR scored 51 points after halftime to earn a 83-58 victory over the Warhawks inside the Jack Stephens Center. Marcelis Hansberry added a season-high 14 points off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting. R.J. McCray matched James with a team-best four assists and Millaun Brown led the Warhawks with eight rebounds. ULM shot 38.9 percent from the field and knocked home a season-best nine 3-pointers on 25 attempts against the Trojans. The Warhawks struggled at the charity stripe, making just 7-of-17 attempts. The Warhawks opened the scoring and led for the first 13 minutes of the first half, until Ben Dillard connected on his first of three 3-pointers in the game to give the Trojans a 21-20 lead with 6:51 to play before halftime. The 3-pointer was part of 9-0 run that gave UALR the lead for good. The Trojans held a 32-27 lead at halftime, then used a 9-1 spurt to begin the second half and put the game away. The UALR bench outscored ULM s 42-23, paced by a game-high 17 points from Dillard. Dillard hit three of UALR s 10 3-pointers on the night. He was also one of three Trojans to make four free throws in the game. UP NEXT ULM makes the short trip to Lafayette, La. to take on UL-Lafayette on Sunday at 7:15 p.m. OLATAYO NAMED LSWA PLAYER OF THE WEEK (JAN. 14) Amos Olatayo was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Men s Basketball Player of the Week on Jan. 14. Olatayo is the first ULM player to earn LSWA honors since Lawrence Gilbert did so in 2010. Olatayo averaged 20.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in two games, including a career-high 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting against Middle Tennessee (Jan. 12). Olatayo scored 17 points in the second half against the Blue Raiders top-rated defense to help lead the Warhawks back from a 15-point deficit at halftime to within two midway through the second half. The Alief, Texas, native began the week with 17 points and eight rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench at Troy (Jan. 10). WARHAWKS SIGN FOUR DURING EARLY SIGNING PERIOD ULM head coach Keith Richard announced the signing of four student-athletes on the first day of the early signing period (Nov. 14). Joining the Warhawks next season will be junior college big men Tylor Ongwae (Eldoret, Kenya), Marvin Williams (Memphis, Tenn.) and Demondre Harvey (Minden, La.), as wellas prep school point guard Nick Coppola (Richmond, Va.). COACH RICHARD ADDS TO HIS STAFF ULM head coach Keith Richard has added to his staff as he enters his third season at ULM. Richard hired former Bossier Parish Community College assistant Ryan Cross and former Louisiana Tech standout player Lonnie Cooper to his staff. Also new to the program this season is former ULM player Fabio Ribeiro as the team s graduate assistant coach. All three have either played for or coached with Richard in the past. Cross brings a wealth of collegiate coaching experience to the Warhawks and a familiarity with Coach Richard. Cross served on Richard s staff at Louisiana Tech from 2003-06 and previously had head coaching stints at Chipola Junior College (1999-03) and Barton County Community College (1998-99). Cooper was a four-year starter and three-time All-Sun Belt performer for Louisiana Tech from 1995-99. As a senior, he earned first team All-Sun Belt honors and led the Bulldogs to the Sun Belt regular-season title in Richard s first season as head coach. He played 11 years professionally overseas and was part of eight championship teams during that stretch. ULM S APR ON THE RISE The ULM men s basketball team has shown significant improvement in its academic progress rate (APR) over the past two seasons and the NCAA has taken notice, announcing in March that the Warhawks would have all 13 scholarships available and be able to participate in postseason play for the 2012-13 season. ULM graduated three players last season, including Hugh Mingo, Christian Bibi Ndongo and Fabio Ribeiro. ULM will still be partially sanctioned this season as it will have two hours less practice time each week and will play 10 percent less games than the rest of the team s across the country. ULM PICKED FIFTH IN SUN BELT WEST DIVISION The ULM men s basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the Sun Belt West Division in a poll of the league s head coaches. North Texas was the unanimous pick to win the Sun Belt West Division with a total of 55 points. The Mean Green was followed in the standings by Arkansas State, UALR, UL-Lafayette and ULM. Defending regular-season champion Middle Tennessee garnered all 11 first place votes and a conference -best 65 points as the favorite to win the East Division of the Sun Belt. The Sooners finished with a 49-30 rebounding edge and outscored the Warhawks 42-26 in the paint and 16-6 in second-chance points to move to 1-0 on the season. ULM junior guard Amos Olatayo had a stellar performance in his debut with the Warhawks, netting a game-high and career-high 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. Olatayo also had eight rebounds, three steals and one assist in 31 minutes. R.J. McCray added seven points for the Warhawks, while Millaun Brown and Jayon James each registered six points in their first game for ULM. James also finished with a team-high four assists. The Bulldogs used a 21-0 run - spanning eight minutes - midway through the second half to build a 23-point advantage and cruise to its fifth straight victory. I thought Louisiana Tech wore us down (in the second half), ULM head coach Keith Richard said. The constant harassment and the constant pressure over the course of time finally wore us down and helped them build up a pretty big lead. Sophomore guard Trent Mackey came off the bench and netted a career-high 17 points to lead the Warhawks (0-2). Mackey finished 6 of 11 from the field and 3 of 5 from 3-point range to surpass his previous career high of 13 points, set twice last season. Junior guard R.J. McCray and junior forward Jayon James each finished with 10 points and four assists. Junior guard Amos Olatayo finished with a game-high nine rebounds to go along with seven points and three steals. The contest was the first conference game of the season and WKU improves to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference play while ULM dips to 0-3 and 0-1 in the league. The victory snapped a 20-game home losing streak for the Warhawks, which dated back to Jan. 4, 2011. The Warhawks turned up the intensity on defense in the overtime period as Southeastern Louisiana managed just two points in the final five minutes. The Jaguars used a strong defensive performance to limit the Warhawks to 25 percent (12-of-48) shooting for the game. Southern shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) for the game and made 7 of 20 shots from 3-point range. MONROE, La. -- South Alabama staved off a late ULM comeback attempt to pick up a 77-72 victory on Thursday inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Jaguars shot 59.1 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Warhawks 39-15 for the game, but needed a clutch basket in the final minute to put away a gutsy performance by ULM. Junior guard Amos Olatayo came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points, including a pair of high-flying dunks for the Warhawks. Junior forward Millaun Brown chipped in a career-best 13 points and junior guard R.J. McCray added 10 points and five assists. Junior forward Jayon James finished with seven points, six assists and a careerhigh five steals but had his double-digit rebounding streak snapped at five. The Warhawks cut the lead to 73-69 with 1:12 to play with a 10-2 run before South Alabama s Dre Conner rebounded his own missed 3-pointer and got the putback to give the Jaguars a comfortable lead in the final minute. It capped a solid night for South Alabama and junior forward Augustine Rubit, who netted 32 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Jaguars. MONROE, La. -- Middle Tennessee survived a second-half comeback by ULM to pick up a 66-57 victory on Saturday in Sun Belt action inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Middle Tennessee (14-4, 6-1 SBC) used its size and quickness to out-rebound ULM 40-22 and took advantage with a 12-3 edge in second-chance points to hold off an inspired second-half rally by the Warhawks, who trailed 34-19 at halftime. MIAMI -- FIU scored the final five points of the game to outlast ULM 76-73 in a Sun Belt shootout on Saturday evening inside U.S. Century Bank Arena. The Warhawks (3-15, 2-10 SBC) shot 58 percent for the game -- including a blistering 70.4 percent in the second half -- and led by two points in the final minute before the Panthers (12-10, 7-6 SBC) rallied for the victory. With ULM leading 73-71, the Panthers Malik Smith converted a three-point play with 19 seconds remaining and Deric Hill came up with a timely steal and converted a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining to give FIU a threepoint advantage. Junior Jayon James had his game-tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer come up short as ULM dropped its seventh straight contest. The loss overshadowed a pair of monster performances for the Warhawks as junior Amos Olatayo finished with a career-high 30 points and eight rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. It marked the third straight game that Olatayo has scored 20-plus points and the sixth time this season. He becomes the first ULM player to score 30 points in a game since Tommie Sykes netted 32 against Union College on Jan. 4, 2011. James finished just shy of a triple-double with 11 points, nine rebounds and a career-high 15 assists in 40 minutes. James 15 assists were the second most in school history and the most since Larry Saulters recorded 19 assists against Mississippi College during the 1969-70 season. It was also the most assists by a player in the Sun Belt and tied for the sixth most in the NCAA this season. Sophomore Trent Mackey added 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range for ULM. Mackey nailed four 3-pointers in the second half to help the Warhawks rally from an eight-point deficit. Mackey converted a 3-pointer to tie the score at 71 and Olatayo raced down the floor for a transition layup to give the Warhawks a 73-71 advantage with just over a minute remaining. ULM forced a stop on the other end and got the ball back with a chance to put the game away, but sophomore Trey Lindsey stepped out of bounds with 33 seconds left to give the ball back to FIU. Smith stepped up and drove the lane for a layup and a foul to give the Panthers the lead for good on FIU s next possession. Smith led four FIU players in double-digit scoring with 17 points. Tymel Murphy added 14 points, Jerome Frink chipped in 13 points and Marco Porcher Jimenez finished with 10 points for the Panthers. ULM and FIU traded runs in the first half, but it was the Panthers 12-3 spurt to close out the half that gave them a 35-29 edge at the break. The Warhawks went up 47-46 on a 3-pointer by Mackey with 14:06 remaining before FIU used an 11-2 run to take 63-54 advantage -- its largest of the game -- with 8:16 to play.
