Charolais Origin-The Charolaise originated in west-central to southeastern France. Use-They produce excellent quality beef and often are used to improve herds of other cattle breeds. Charolais tend to be hardy animals, able to withstand cold winters and warm summers. Angus mountainous country. Origin-In the northeastern part of Scotland lie the four counties of Aberdeen, Banff, Kincardine, and Angus. Limousin Origin- These golden-red cattle are native to the south central part of France in the regions of Limousin and Marche. Use- The terrain of the homeland has been described as rugged and rolling with rocky soil and a harsh climate. Consequently, the growing of field crops was very difficult at best and emphasis was placed on animal agriculture. Limousin cattle, as a result of their environment, evolved into a breed of unusual sturdiness, health and adaptability. This lack of natural resources also enabled the region to remain relatively isolated and the farmers free to develop their cattle with little outside genetic interference. Color- golden-red and a lighter colour under the stomach, inside the thighs, around the eyes and muzzle, and around the anus and end of the tail. The skin is free of pigmentation. Limousins with black genetics show a variation in colour. Polled or horned- naturally horned although international breeders have now bred polled.
Shorthorn Origin-The Shorthorn breed originated on the Northeastern coast of England in the counties of Northumberland, Durham, York and Lincoln. use-shorthorns were popular with America s early settlers. They valued this breed for meat and milk and found Shorthorns a willing power for the wagon and plow. The breed followed pioneer wagons across the Great Plains and into the far West color- white, roan and red, which may be solidred or have white markings. Solid red Shorthorns are often used to help maintain solid colors in crosses. The whites and roans can be used on black cattle to get both blues and blacks Polled or horned? Hereford Origin- farmers of Herefordshire, England, founded the breed Use- It is a testament to the hardiness of the breed that, while originating in cool, moist Britain, they have found great success, and indeed have thrived, in much harsher climates. Color- varying from rust brown to a deep rich red. Face, crest, dewlap, underline, switch and legs below the hocks are characteristically white. Polled or horned? Brahman Origin- The Brahman breed originated from Bos indicus cattle originally brought from India. Use- food supplies, insect pests, parasites, diseases and the weather extremes of tropical India, the native cattle developed some remarkable adaptations for survival which cattle producers in the USA found useful and advantageous. - See more at. Color- Brahmans very in color from very light grey orred to almost black. A majority of the breed are light to medium grey. Mature bulls are normally darker than cows and usually have dark areas on the neck, shoulders and lower thighs. Polled or horned? They can be polled or horned.
Simmental origin-established in the Swiss Canton of Berne. Use- the ability to adapt to its environment has allowed them to become influential in cattle markets across the world. Color-The basic colors of the breed range from light to dark yellow andred to dark red on white. Polled or horned? Simmentals are naturally horned, but Simmental regulations require dehorning for registration. Polled strains of Simmental also exist.
Texas longhorn states Origin- brought to Texas from southern and midwestern Use- Due to their innate gentle disposition and intelligence, Texas Longhorns are increasingly being trained as riding steers. Color-There were brindles; blues mulberry blue, ring-streaked blue, speckled blue, grullas so named because they had the hue of the sandhill crane, also called mousecolored or slate duns, washed-out and Jersey creams -- all hues of "yellow" browns with bay points; blacks, solid and splotched with white, brown and red; whites both clearly bright and dirty speckled; many sabinas, red and white peppered. Scottish highland Origin-Although records on Highland cattle first brought to this country from Scotland are rather obscure, due to the fact that there was no registry for them, we know there were small importations, made from time to time. Highland cattle may have been brought to the east coast states in the 1920s. Use- recognized the natural qualities of the Highland animal and imported them to improve the blood lines of their herds. As a result, the Highland contributed in a great way to the success of the American cattle industry. Color-the slightly smaller and usually black Kyloe, whose primary domain was the islands off the west coast of northern Scotland. Santa Gertrudis Origin- The Santa Gertrudis breed of cattle, named for the Spanish land grant where Captain Richard King first established the King Ranch. Use- Were developed to thrive, prosper and gain weight on the native grasses of the South Texas brush country. Color- A deep cherry-redcolor has been established in the breed. horned.
