2017 Chapter Z Directors Paul & Cheryl Engelman As long as Mother Nature cooperates with us we have a busy month ahead of us, we start off the month with our Motorist Awareness Windshield Wash at the Fastlane Phillips at 141/44 on May 6th from 10-12 with a lunch outing afterwards. On May 13th we take a ride to Jay's BBQ in Marble Hill Missouri. On May 20th we will have our Mystery Ride; this is always a popular event with Chapter Z. On May 21st after a great ride we will stop by Niehaus Appreciation Days and on the way home we will stop at Prairie Town for the annual Fireman's Chicken Dinner. We will wrap up the month with a ride to Devil's Elbow, which was the location for the Munger Moss Sandwich Shop on Old Route 66. We may add additional rides that were cancelled due to the weather in April; we are determined to get Pat to Bixby!!!! We are still looking for any volunteers to plan a ride for the Chapter.
2017 Assistant Chapter Directors Vern & Pat Watts Hi everyone and welcome to May. We had a pretty busy April. On the 2nd we had 19 members went on a ride to Midway and in honor of our granddaughter Jayden and KZ and Carla's granddaughter Lillian the chapter dressed in blue representing Autism Awareness Day. We thank you and appreciate your support. On the 15th Mark and Sharon Meyer opened their garage to host the biggest Maintenance Day we have ever had with 34 members present. Several bikes got worked on and a lot of laughs were shared. We all shared in the delicious meal prepared by Sharon, and all the goodies provided by the Z ladies while we lounged around on their awesome deck. Thank you so much for the great hospitality. On the 18th we met at the Pasta House in Affton. We had 25 members enjoy some great food and company, followed by Dairy Queen by a few. On the 23rd 14 members went on the ride to Reid s restaurant for breakfast, and then went on to visit Fort de Chartres. At this time we still have two more rides planned on the 29th and 30th but dear Mother Nature may say no. Watch your emails for updates. Ride safe friends Vern and Pat Watts
2017 Rider Educators Les & Sara Gibson I am sitting here at my computer wondering what I can say to educate and inspire. It is difficult to write articles every month and to write without just putting down words that someone may read. The weather is beginning to warm up and grant us great riding days. I want to talk about winter and cold weather riding. Many of us do not have electrical heated gear, so I would like to point out an option called layering. There is a flood of information on layering on the internet, most agree a light weight wool or down (feathers) is best followed by a light weight waterproof outer garment. I know Under Armor brand offers several different weights of under garments based upon the cold weather you will be in. I am sharing this information in case you find yourself out unprepared. On the other side of the coin, how about summer and hot weather? You will do yourself a big favor if you wear a long sleeve shirt, or the pull on sleeves. I know there are people that will disagree and say a plain T-shirt is cooler, but what is Mr. Sun doing to your arms? Whether it is hot or cold weather, it is important to keep well hydrated. Saving money: if you do not want to put out the bucks for a high dollar GPS that is water proof made for motorcycles, here is a little tip I learned. A plastic sandwich bag slipped over your non-water proof GPS will get you by just fine. PLP- Parking Lot Practice: you do not have to be with your chapter to practice on a vacant parking lot. On an open parking lot, you can practice the box by using the parking lines as a guide. You can try slow moving tight turns on an open parking lot. I do recommend you have someone with you just in case something would happen. Cones can be purchased at Wal-mart and some sporting goods stores. I would also suggest you wear FULL gear when practicing. Getting permission I leave that up to you. Maintenance Day, a great time with friends and a chance to learn some things about your bike you didn t know. I hope this article has helped someone, remember YOU make the final decision. Our Motto... Share the Road! Our Mission... To Facilitate A Reduction In Motorcycle Crashes With Other Motor Vehicles. It's Here! (Start of riding season). There have already been some group rides and there are many more on the calendar scheduled. Had a great day for maintenance day at our house on 4-15-17 with 35 members showing up and Sharon and I really enjoyed having it and hope we are asked again to have it! The one thing that I noticed that day was other doing and talking about the maintenance aspect of the day was the talking and sharing of the safety aspect of riding. There is a vast knowledge in our group to be shared among ourselves and to the public. Many have been riding motorcycles since there teenage years. And looking at our group that is a looooonge time! MAP Windshield Wash is scheduled for May 6th at Fast Lane gas station/convenient-mart (901 Meramec Station Rd, just off 141 near I-44) from 10am-Noon. Come help handout motorcycle awareness items, clean a few windshields, and display our bikes. Another opportunity to get motorcycle awareness out to the public and show what Chapter Z GWRRA is all about! Hopefully the bikes are all ready and safe to ride and looking forward to the months of riding ahead of us. Stay aware of your surroundings when riding at all times and please stay focused at all times. PLEASE Ride Smart and Ride Safe! MARK & SHARON MEYER Motorcycle Awareness
