Entrepreneurial venture by Alumnus My hometown is in Asansol so I had decided to do MBA from a reputed college which has good faculty and good placement cell nearby my hometown. On further research done the best college in Durgapur was NSHM knowledge campus and without any second thought I took my admission and started my journey of MBA. In 4 th semester I got a job in AEGON RELIGARE LIFE INSURANCE (ASANSOL BRANCH) as a BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANGER. To be very true I was not satisfied with the job or I would say that JOB WAS NOT MY CUP OF TEA. Zain Hassan MBA (2013-2015) I had a entrepreneur skill so after working for 2 month I gave my resignation letter and joined my family business which was setup in 1893. In 1983 the first centralized AC HOTEL of ASANOL was made by my father named as HOTEL AKBAR and it s still maintained by us. In 2008 another new hotel was started in ASANSOL to add on the business. The name is HOTEL ELITE PLAZA and a market was also inaugurated as ELITE PLAZA MARKET. Page 8 Article A Bicycle at the Price of Your Scooter or Bike or Car - Any Takers? NBS Tidings - Bijay Bhujabal If a smooth-talking young man approaches you to give a demo of his slim and attractive-looking bicycle promising health and lifestyle benefits, I guess you won t say no. He would encourage you to take a ride of the bike, explaining how to engage the gears (There may be anything between 7 to 30gears in the bike! And you thought two-wheelers come at best with 5 gears!). Chance is there that you will take his bike for a spin, first getting impressed at how light yet sure footed it feels, then get surprised how easy and smooth the pedaling and steering effort is, and finally, amazed at the kind of speed you are able to attain with it! Then alighting from it, though silently wanting to take it for a long ride, possibly on the smooth tarmac of the nearby National Highway but shying away from asking the guy, you would enthusiastically enquire about its price. Upon hearing that bikes such as this cost anywhere between INR INR 25,000 to INR 14 Lakhs, your amusing and sarcastic reaction will be like, Are you kidding man! For that price, one can get a moped, or a scooter, a mobike, a hatchback car or even a mid-sized premium sedan!! One must be nuts, or might have big lottery money, to spend that kind of money on a bicycle!! Aren t Made in India geared bikes available for at best for INR 7 grands! A bicycle is after all a bicycle! Well not exactly, as you might have realized after the test ride of his bike. But still then, you might not have been convinced at that kind of super-premium price tag. Let me explain what makes these super premium life style and sports bicycles so expensive. Today I proudly introduce myself to the world of business as a pass out from NSHM Business school. It is a privilege for me to acknowledge what my professors from NSHM did for me and my business. As an entrepreneur I got inspiration and my start up got much required guidance from the faculty of business. My teachers became my mentors. Aishik Sarkar The Price Value Equation To start with, almost all the premium bikes are imported and have to pay very high customs duties. The total duties to be paid for them could be as high as 44%. Add to that the expensive materials used to manufacture their frames and other components. The whole bicycle could be rigid or foldable. The main component of a bicycle is its frame. Other components such as wheels, handle, seat, cranks, forks, etc. are fitted to the frame. The materials commonly used for the making of the frame are metals, non-metals or a combination of both. Among metals, steel is the most common and familiar to all of us. The other metals include aluminum alloys, titanium, magnesium, scandium, and beryllium. Non-metals include carbon fiber (most popular among the non-metals), thermoplastics, bamboo, wood and even cardboard. Materials such aluminum, titanium and carbon fiber, though expensive, are light-weight, corrosion-resistant and strong.

Volume 1 Issue 2 Article (contd...) Page 9 In addition to frames made of such materials, these high-end bikes are fitted with components which are extremely light-weight, strong, and build to last a lifetime. Many of them come with hydraulic and spring suspensions at both front and rear ends, gears, light-weight and strong wheels, strong brakes-now a days even disk brakes at both ends. Their hubs and ball bearings are completely sealed to prevent dust, water and moisture from entering; as a result, they do not need any kind of greasing or lubrication for a long time. Often these bicycles are foldable, and mostly serviceable by the owner, except for physical and structural damages. You can disassemble the bike and reassemble it using some simple manufacturersupplied quick-release tools in no time. For example, you can take the wheel in less than 10 seconds and take the tire out by hand after depressurizing it. The only things one needs to replace are the tires and brake shoes, that too after 3-5 years! So not surprisingly, the annual maintenance cost is a negligible INR 500/- with even very extensive mile churning. Contrast this experience with your experience with the mass produced bicycles you have ridden in your childhood and school days (often the chain gets loose and unmounts from the crank or the free wheel, the mud guards obviate the need for the bell by knocking the frame constantly, the ball bearings wear out and make the joints/hubs loose, brake pads wear out thin in no time, tires get punctured at the drop of a hat in the summers, the list is endless). I myself had a Hero bicycle with double suspension and world famous Shimano gears (20 combinations) till a couple of years back, but was hardly able to ride it because of the troubles it used to give every other day! So as we saw, for an avid biker and health enthusiast, the bike will pay for itself in the long run. If you didn t have to pay the high customs duties, then an INR 25,000/- bike will cost you just INR 17361/- (with duties at 44%). Premium Bike Buyer s Guide Bicycle types There are many types of bicycles. They are classified by their functions, by the types of sports they are used for, by the design of their frames, by the mode of their propulsion (i.e., gears, without gears, battery -powered), and by style. However, to keep it simple, I will briefly explain the following types: Road Bikes: Meant for racing Mountain Terrain Bikes (MTB): Meant for off-road biking Hybrid Bikes: Can be used both on roads and off-roads BMX: Used for stunt biking (BMX stands for bicycle motocross) Cruiser Bikes: For relaxed long-ridings Tourng Bikes: For touring and long journeys In India, we mainly find Roadster Bikes (the one ones you find majority of common people riding), Sports Light Roadsters (SLRs) and MTBs.

Page 10 Article (contd...) NBS Tidings Major Premium Bike Brands Available in India Among the Indian brands, south-based TI Cycles BSA Montra, Atlas Hi-Tech Bikes and Hero s Urban Trail are noteworthy. Among the imported ones, Trek and Tern, (both imported by Firefox), Giant(imported by Pune-based Starkenn Sports Pvt. Ltd), Cannondale and Bianchi (both imported by BSA, may cost as much as INR 14 lakhs) are noteworthy. The INR 14,000-30,000 segment is the most popular segment currently in India. Majority of buyers are young (25 to 40 years), health-conscious people who use these top-of-theline cycles for sport, recreation, or exercise. The bicycle market in the country is valued at Rs 4,600 crore, of which the premium segment constitutes Rs 1,000 crore with a compounded annual growth rate of 30 per cent. What to look for in a premium bike For daily commuting, hybrid bikes are considered the best. The most important part to look for is the shape of its frame and the material it is made of. Then consider the shape of the handle and if it suits your riding style. As far as the fork is concerned, the rigid ones provide more stability than the hydraulic ones, whereas the latter provides better cushioning on rough roads, and hence better comfort. Next on the lookout should be brakes, which could be the normal ones with rubber brake shoes or disk ones (either at the front only, or at both the ends). Disk brakes cost a good extra amount but worth the bucks considering the speed at which these bikes can carry you. Do enquire if the ball bearing sets are sealed types or not. It is also very important to check the presence of safety accessories like reflectors all around and bell. Other accessories to ask for are a side stand, mud flaps, water bottle holder, bicycle pump holder (if not part of the standard equipment). Last but not the least, do ask for a little training on how to troubleshoot and do the maintenance by self. The author is Principal, NSHM Business School Durgapur, and a bicycle enthusiast. His student Aishik Sarkar (MBA Batch of 2013-15 of this Institute) has turned entrepreneur with the retailing of premium bicycles. He owns one such bike (weighing just 10 kgs) and is an avid biker. He has covered 400 kms in one stretch and clocks 30 kms daily. He is able to attain a peak speed of 50 km per hour! Many of the facts presented in this article are based on his user experience.
