WWSC NEWSLETTER No 18 October, 2016 Message from the Board Helpful things to know about training Welcome to the 2016/17 summer season. We are very happy to see that there is a great mix of new and returning families for the 2016/17 season. Thanks to everyone who so quickly completed the five step process for enrolment, although opening registration a little later than we had hoped we have had an overwhelming response and are fully booked for Monday afternoons and Wednesday afternoons for the inside pool. This summer in addition to the agreement to the Code of Conduct as part of the online registration process we introduced collection of a hard copy. The coaches spoke with each swimmer, either as a group or one on one where needed, to talk about expectations. We hope that this allows the swimmers to be aware of and know the foundations on which the club operates which will in turn lead to a more enjoyable experience for all. At the Board meeting on 12 October items for discussion included: an update on memberships and session bookings; a change to the refund policy for training fees for those who pay upfront (NSW Swimming membership refunds are not possible); upcoming Riverina carnival that we are hosting; SISA long course Championships; development of Bylaws to sit alongside the constitution; new electronic scoreboard; and funding applications for new equipment along with the usual reports. Please contact one of the board members if you would like more information about items discussed or have something you would like discussed at a future meeting. The lanes are broken down into squad and ability levels and the order that the children swim in is completely up to the coach. The order is very important to making the lane operate effectively and can be altered during a training session. Coaches are continually assessing the swimmers and as their skills develop to the required level the coaching team will advise if a swimmer is ready to progress to the next squad. Occasionally swimmers may be moved lanes depending on the drills being swum and their individual skills. At training skills are more important than speed the correct technique takes time to develop and correct technique will lead to more speed. As you can appreciate it is really important that coaches concentrate on the swimmers during training sessions so we ask that if parents need to talk to the coaches please do so before the start or at the end. If a swimmer has an injury it is important to tell their coach each time they get in the pool. Coaches are able to modify drills to accommodate injuries but they must have up to date information about the injury to determine what is suitable.

What are the various swimming organisations? There are four levels in the swimming governance hierarchy. 1. National: Swimming Australia has oversight of all swimming in Australia. 2. State: Swimming NSW sits below Swimming Australia. 3. Area: In NSW there are 12 areas who govern and provide local athlete development opportunities for specific geographical regions of the state. In Wagga we are part of Southern Inland Swimming Association (along with 39 other clubs) area. Southern Inland is broken into 3 regions/zones being Murray, South West and Riverina and we fall in to the Riverina region. 4. Local: At the local level there are the clubs who directly service members. Wagga has our club (WWSC) and Wagga Asthma Club. Looking for Sponsors for our Carnival Our club will be hosting a local carnival on Saturday 19 th November at the Oasis. The Board would love to hear from any businesses or families interested in sponsoring an event at the carnival. For $50 you will have a naming rights to a race (printed in the program and announced on the day), be acknowledged in our newsletter and thanked profusely! Please email waggaswimclub@gmail.com or talk to one of the Board members prior to 3 rd November if interested. Georgina Hope Foundation 2016 JX Awardees The Australian Junior Excellence Program (JX) recognises, rewards and encourages junior swimmers who, through their development of aquatic skills and fitness, achieve a high standard of swimming excellence. Swimmers aged from 9 to 16 years, who accomplish times set by Swimming Australia, qualify at Gold, Silver, Bronze or Green standard, depending on their best performance/s during the season. This week the packs for the 2016 awardees arrived so if you see some swimmers receiving a bag of goodies give them a pat on the back, they earned it. Upcoming Carnivals Club members are not required to attend zone/regional carnivals but there are plenty of opportunities if you are looking for carnivals to attend. Your NSW Swimming membership will allow you to enter carnivals throughout the State and also interstate (additional clearance required by club Race Secretary) and many now have online entries. To do online entries you will need your user name and log on so keep it in a safe spot when you become a member as you will need it at various times throughout the year. There are a few different types of carnivals which include: Development Meets have Break Times for each event on their flyer. A Break time means that if you have official race times that are faster than the time on the flyer you can t enter those races. You do not need to have any official times to enter development meets. Development meets are a great introduction to bigger swimming carnivals. Qualifying Meets may have qualifying times which will be noted on the flyer, others don t have qualifying times. You need an official time faster than the time on the flyer to be able to enter. Times recorded at these meets will also be uploaded to NSW Swimming website. Some of these meets require minimum entry times- these times can be earnt at time trials, development meets and other qualifying meets. What if there are no times noted on the carnival? If there are no times noted on the flyer then it is open to all registered swimmers.

Below are a few of the upcoming carnivals and club nights however there are plenty more carnivals that can be found at any of the following sites: SISA https://southerninlandnsw.swimming.org.au/page.php?id=1498 Ovens and Murray http://www.oandmdistrictswimming.org.au/pages/meets.htm ACT Swimming http://www.swimmingact.com.au/swimmingact/summary/meets.html Date Event Location Entries 28 Oct Club Night 1 Oasis Online 29 30 Oct Telopea Meet AIS Online 4 Nov Club Night 2 Oasis Online 5 Nov Barellan 25m Sprint Development carnival Barellan Through our Race Secretary 6 Nov Albury North Lavington Meet Through our Race Secretary 11 Nov Club Night 3 Oasis Online 12 13 Nov Woden Qualifying Meet AIS Online 13 Nov Newman Shield Griffith Through our Race Secretary 17 Nov Club Night 4 Oasis Online 19 Nov Wagga Meet Oasis (see note on next page) WWSC members only entries to?? Did you know?? WWSC members are eligible for group membership to the Oasis which saves you money a family will save $174 and an individual $110. If you don t have membership you can still have vouchers loaded onto a tag so the kids can scan in and not have to have money (which occasionally gets lost or accidently spent at the school tuckshop)

Albury Carnival A group of 11 club members headed down the road to Albury on 16 th October for one of the first summer carnivals. There were lots of great swims and times including a truck load of PBs. Wagga Carnival We will be putting out a call for some assistance for the carnival. We will need to provide a large number of timekeepers, food for officials and other jobs on the day. With this and the call for sponsors in mind the Board decided to wave the entry fees for up to 5 swims for WWSC members who want to compete in our upcoming carnival on November 19 so instead of doing your entries online please email them.
