Persona Building As Kim Goodwin discusses in her book esigning for the igital Age: How to Create Human-Centered Products and ervices, creating personas involves turning important behavioral patterns into useful sets of characterizations. Following Alan Cooper s style of behavioral analysis, I mapped a set of variables related to runners based on interviews I conducted. (I only conducted three interviews which isn t a sufficient sample size from which accurate conclusions can be drawn, but I was limited by semester time constraints.) After analyzing my results, I was able to create a picture of a primary and secondary user persona to help inform later design decisions. Role: Runner tephanie () eanie () ave () Behavioral Variables A Competitive runner Racing is key part of training plan Travels outside to race Race entry cost not a factor Member of running group / club Runs for competition Ran cross country / track in high school or college Regularly trains with other people Running only sport / fitness activity Wants to improve personal bests igns up for races online igns up for races far in advance Proximity of races to home unimportant Frustrated by lack of easily accessible info about races Runs in team circuit Runs 30+ miles each week Level of competition key to choosing races Has a coach Long-time runner oes not run in themed / costumed races oes not race to raise money for charity Behavioral Variables B Non-competitve runner Racing is used to help with daily motivation oes not travel outside to race Race entry cost is a key factor Not member of running group / club Runs to stay in shape id not run cross country / track in high school or college Trains independently Running is one part of larger fitness plan Wants to maintain current pace / fitness igns up for races in person igns up for races within one week of race day Proximity of races to home key factor in deciding which to race Uninterested in specific details about race (other than distance) oes not run in team circuit Runs less than 30 miles each week Level of competition not factor in choosing races oes not have a coach New runner Likes to run themed / costumed races Races to raise money for charity

Persona A Long-time serious runner Running is only fitness activity / sport Runs to improve personal best times Trains with a group / club Enters races to compete Goals: Beat other runners in races Improve PRs upport running club Persona B Newer and / or less serious runner Running is just one part of fitness plan Runs for fitness / health reasons Trains alone Races are social events Goals: tay healthy and fit Have fun running and racing Meet new people Name: Melissa Williams 24 year old female, single, no children Competed in high school and college cross country and track Runs 55-95 miles per week depending on training and racing schedule Looks for races with tough competition -- likes to know number of runners in past years, winning times, depth of field, difficulty of courses Member of local track/run club Usually trains with other members of club Frustrated with lack of information regarding local running events and races, particularly with regards to competitiveness of races and prize money Races 5-10 times each year, at least half of which are located in the Name: ohn Michaels 38 year old male, married, 2 children Concerned with overall health and fitness Lift weights, cycles, and attends fitness classes in addition to running Runs three days each week alone before work in the morning Looks for specialty runs (mud runs and costume-themed runs), races close to home, finisher s prizes, and post-race events Loves social aspect of race events, especially post-race parties Primary Persona This is Melissa Williams, a 24 year old graduate student. Melissa moved to Minneapolis, MN after graduating from the University of Iowa last year. he competed in cross-country and track all four years at Iowa, and she d like to continue competitive racing now that she s finished her NCAA career. Melissa is looking to improve her personal bests, and she d like to train with other post-collegiate athletes. he s still coached by her college coach, and she typically trains 80 miles per week. Melissa wanted to join a team of athletes in situations similar to her own, and after a race last summer she met some of the members of the Track Club. The TCTC seemed like a good fit for her, so she joined the club. he now trains with track club members 3-5 times per week and races for the team. Melissa Williams 24 years old Trains intensely Competitive runner espite her affiliation with the Track Club, she isn t yet familiar with the local racing scene. Melissa is looking for competitive races and deep fields; she wants to know the course difficulty, whether or not the distance is UATF certified, who has won the race in previous years (and in what times), and whether or not the race offers prize money for top finishers. Because she s new to the area, Melissa doesn t know how to find worthwhile races, and race flyers don t provide sufficient details. he d also like to find an easy way to connect with training partners, as well as other area runners, and discuss training and racing. Other members of the TCTC are in much the same situation as Melissa, especially runners who didn t grow up in the area. Currently, most information about races is word-of-mouth. Local websites aren t comprehensive or easy to use, and planning a race schedule is frustrating for her. What Melissa really wants is a one-stop online resoursce for this information, including links to race websites for easy registration.

: Primary Persona User cenarios Using the primary persona, I wrote user scenarios describing the most critical needs of the user and the step-by-step process she would take to meet those needs. earch for Upcoming Races & Race Regsitration 1. After conducting an online search of area running-related websites, Melissa comes across. 2. Though the home page lists several upcoming races, Melissa decides to search more specifically for races by distance. 3. he navigates to the Advanced earch page and enters her desired race distance. he has a two week window in her training schedule for this particular race. he enters the date range using the calendar picker and clicks on the earch button. 4. The search yields twelve results. Of those, Melissa assumes only a handful will be competitive, so she adds a third filter of past finishing times (in a desired range). he s left with two races. 5. Melissa clicks on each race listing to read an extended description of the races, including course difficulty, number of entrants, prize money, UATF status, and cost of entry. 6. Of the two races, one appears to fit all of her criteria. he clicks on the Register Now button which takes her to the race s website where she is able to enter the field. Connect With Other Runners 1. Melissa wants to find out what other local runners will be competing in a specific race she has entered. 2. ince she is new to the forum, she creates a login and account by giving basic information and creating a username and password when prompted on the Runner s Forum page. 3. he then navigates to the forum s homepage and clicks on tart New Thread. he enters her question regarding the upcoming race and clicks ubmit. 4. ince she elected at registration to be notified by email whenever anyone responded to her thread, she receives several emails the next day with responses to her post. By clicking on a link in the email, she is taken back to the forum page with her thread open. 5. Melissa clicks on Reply and responds to the other posters.

: User Environment esign Based on the user scenarios I created, I designed a user environment (based off of the User Environment esign formalism created by Beyer and Holtzblatt in their book Contextual esign) to organize the structure of -- and relationships between -- key functions and information within the website. 1. Create Account 8. : Wireframes I created a set of wireframes covering all of the major functions of the website established in the user environment design. Next, I wrote a set of tasks and instructions for usability testing and tested the wireframes on several potential users. I revised my wireframes in response to the feedback from my testers.
