RHODE ISLAND VS. IONA - SERIES NOTES Thursday will be the 14th meeting all time between Rhode Island and Iona. URI leads the series, 10-3, and has won six of the last seven contests against the Gaels. The last time Iona visited the Ryan Center, Rhode Island won 79-74 in overtime behind a career-best 27 points from Hassan Martin. Current seniors Jared Terrell and Jarvis Garrett each had 12 points in the game. Iona and Rhode Island both have faced Holy Cross this season. Rhody defeated Holy Cross 88-66 on Nov. 19. Iona faced the Crusaders on Tuesday night and won 82-68. Iona was the preseason pick to win the MAAC, marking the second of three consecutive conference favorties Rhode Island is facing. The Rams fell at SEC favorite Alabama on Dec. 6 and defeated CAA favorite College of Charleston last time out. After the game against Iona, the Rams host Atlantic Sun favorite Florida Gulf Coast on Dec. 27. Rhode Island beat Big South favorite UNC Asheville in the season opener. RAMS 8TH IN THE NATION IN TURNOVER MARGIN Rhode Island ranks eighth in the country and leads the Atlantic 10 with a +5.8 turnover margin. The Rams force 17.67 turnovers per game, which also leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks 20th in the country. On the other end of the floor, the Rams are turning the ball over just 11.9 times per game. Opponents have committed 20 or more turnovers in four games overall this year. Rhode Island won the defensive triple crown in the 2016-17 regular season, leading the Atlantic 10 in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense and 3-point field goal percentage defense. DON T BE DOWTIN HIS HANDLE Sophomore point guard Jeff Dowtin ranks fifth in the country and leads the A-10 with a 4.50 assist-to-turnover ratio. He has committed just eight turnovers and has 36 assists in 293 minutes of play this season. Against Holy Cross, Dowtin had a career-high nine assists while committing no turnovers in 34 minutes. Three times this season Dowtin has played at least 30 minutes without turning the ball over. Through nine games, he has had one or zero turnovers seven times. Last year he led the Atlantic 10 in assist/turnover ratio in conference play, recording 55 assists to just 19 turnovers - a 3.24:1 ratio - over 18 games. Last season, Dowtin was the fourth player in the Dan Hurley era to earn A-10 all-rookie honors. This season, Dowtin is second on the team with an average of 32.6 minutes per game. Since Dowtin was inserted into the starting lineup midway through last season, the Rams are 21-7. 2017-18 STATISTICAL COMPARISON RHODE ISLAND IONA 75.1...Points Per Game... 76.2 +6.4...Scoring Margin...+1.4 32.2... With 161 more points, Garrett would become just the seventh player at URI to score 1,000 points while also dishing out 300 assists. URI s 1,000 Points, 300 Assists Club Carlton Silk Owens 2,114 pts, 502 assts (1984-88) Tyson Wheeler 1,918 pts, 712 assts (1994-98) Tom Garrick 1,573 pts, 407 assts (1984-88) Jiggy Williamson 1,531 pts, 346 assts (1974-78) Stan Wright 1,346 pts, 333 assts (1974-78) Preston Murphy 1,218 pts, 322 assts (1995-99) RUSSELL PROVIDING BOOST OFF THE BENCH Freshman Fatts Russell is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 9.0 points in 18.6 minutes off the bench. Russell has scored in double figures three times. He had back-to-back 20-point outings against Providence and Brown, then scored 12 at Alabama, all in the second half. He is shooting.387 from 3-point range, hitting 12-of-31 attempts. He is second on the team in 3-pointers made behind Jared Terrell s 16 makes. Russell was named A-10 Rookie of the Week on Dec. 4. HURLEY APPROACHING 100 WINS Now in his sixth season at Rhode Island, head coach Dan Hurley has a record of 93-77 with the Rams. With seven more wins, he will become the sixth coach to reach 100 victories with the Rams. Hurley has a chance to be the second fastest coach in team history to reach 100 wins. He needs to win seven of the next 16 games to do so. The legendary Frank Keaney - who won 401 games in 28 seasons in Kingston - got his 100th victory in his 149th game at the helm. Jack Kraft needed 185 games to get to the century mark. Other coaches to get to 100 victories at URI are Ernie Calverly (in 190 games), Jim Baron (in 196 games) and Al Skinner (in 202 games). Hurley is looking to join Keaney, Calverly, Baron and Phil Wessels as the only coaches in program history to post four consecutive winning seasons. Keaney had 22 straight winning seasons, and a winning record in 25 out of 26 years from the 1923-24 campaign through 1947-48. The lone exception during the run was 1925-26, when he went 8-8. Since the start of the 2014-15 season, Hurley is 71-38, good for a.651 winning percentage. HURLEY PART OF EXCLUSIVE COACHING CLUB Dan Hurley is one of two active head coaches to coach a nationally-ranked high school and NCAA Division I team. Hurley was the head coach of St. Benedict s Prep in Newark, N.J. from 2001-10, where he led the Grey Bees to a 223-21 overall record and four top five finishes on the USA Today Super 25 high school poll. South Carolina s Frank Martin is the other. His 1997-98 Miami South High School team ranked No. 4 on the USA Today Super 25. EXPERIENCE TO LEAN ON Rhode Island s senior-laden backcourt is as experienced as any team in the country. E.C. Matthews, Jared Terrell, Jarvis Garrett and Stanford Robinson have combined to play 420 games in their careers. Terrell has appeared in 109 games and has averaged 31.1 minutes per game, while Robinson has played in 108 games, including 64 in two seasons at Indiana. Matthews has played 103 games, and Garrett has 100 contests under his belt. Sophomore Jeff Dowtin became a starter midway through last season when Garrett missed time with injury and has started 28 straight games. BERRY ACCURATE FROM THE FLOOR Senior forward Andre Berry is fourth in the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage. Berry - who has started every game this season - is shooting 59.6 percent from the floor, behind only Dayton s Josh Cunningham (73.3 percent), Rashaan Holloway from Massachusetts (61.0) and Khris Lane from VCU (59.7). HOME SWEET HOME Rhody has yet to lose in the Ryan Center this season. Over its last 21 home games, URI is 18-3, including seven straight wins dating back to last year. Since the 2014-15 season, the Rams are 45-9 when playing in Kingston. They are 24-2 in non-conference home games over the same stretch. 2017-18 ATLANTIC 10 COACHES POLL 1. Rhode Island (27) 390 2. Duquesne 61 First-place votes in parentheses ROBINSON STEALING THE SHOW Redshirt senior Stanford Robinson ranks fifth in the nation with an average of 3.11 steals per game. His 28 total steals on the year rank 16th nationally. Robinson had seven steals against UNC Asheville on Nov. 10, tying Rhody s single-game record. The last player to have seven steals in a game for the Rams was Keith Cothran at Ohio on Dec. 27, 2006. Robinson had five steals against Holy Cross on Nov. 19. Robinson has had at least three steals in five of URI s nine games so far this season. Total steals at Rhode Island: 67 in 44 games. Total steals at Indiana: 35 in 64 games. Robinson is getting it done on both ends of the floor, as he leads Rhode Island in rebounds (50) and rebounds per game (5.6) and ranks third on the team in scoring with 10.0 points per game. RAMS BOAST STRONG RPI, STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE Rhode Island s non-conference schedule has been as difficult as any in the country. As of Monday, Rhody s strength of schedule was ranked No. 5 in the country, and its RPI was No. 22. The Rams have played four games against teams that have been in the top 25 this season. Rhody beat No. 20 Seton Hall on Nov. 23 and fell to No. 25 Virginia Nov. 24. The Rams also played at Nevada and Alabama, both of which have been in and out of the rankings and are still receiving votes. When Rhode Island beat No. 20 Seton Hall on Thanksgiving, it was the program s first win over a top 20 team since it beat No. 2 Kansas in the second round of the 1998 NCAA Championship. RAMS RECEIVE VOTES IN TOP 25 POLLS Rhode Island is clearly on the national radar, receiving votes each week in both the Associated Press Top 25 poll and the USA Today Coaches poll. This week, the Rams got two votes in the Associated Press poll. In the latest USA Today poll Rhode Island received six votes, good for 36th in that poll.

Last time out against College of Charleston, Akele impacted the game significantly, logging a +5 plus-minus in 8:12 of action. Akele is shooting a very efficient.500 (14-for-28) from the floor. SENIORS AIM TO MAKE HISTORY Senior guards Jared Terrell, Jarvis Garrett and E.C. Matthews have won 71 games together over the last four seasons. Last year, Rhode Island won 25 games, the third highest win total in program history. The Rams won 26 games in 2009-10 and 28 games in 1987-88. By matching last year s win total, Terrell, Garrett and Matthews would win 90 games, matching the most wins in a four-year span in team history. Marquise Jones, Will Martell, Ben Eaves and Delroy James won 90 from 2007-08 to 2010-11. HISTORIC CROWD ON HAND FOR WIN OVER PROVIDENCE Rhode Island s 75-68 victory over in-state rival Providence was played in front of 7,959 fans, the second-largest crowd in the history of the Ryan Center. The only larger crowd was for a game against Pittsburgh on Dec. 21, 2002. The attendance that night was 8,121. The Providence game marked the 12th sellout for a men s basketball game in the history of the Ryan Center. More than 2,700 full season ticket packages have been sold for this season. In addition, more than 1,400 five- and three-game mini-plan packages have been purchased. Both figures represent the most in the school s history. TICKET SALES SURPASS 2016-17 TOTALS Basketball ticket sales for the 2017-18 season have already surpassed last season s total, with revenue still coming in this year. Since the creation of a ticket sales department within Spectra Venue Management three years ago, men s basketball ticket sales across all categories have increased by 18 percent from 2014-15 through today. The department has seen it s largest gains in the categories of the full season, mini-plan, and group sales packages. The numbers were boosted by the Dec. 2 game against Providence, which was the highest revenue-generating game in Ryan Center history. The highly-successful three- and five-game packages have seen a near-400 percent increase in gross revenue since the department s inception. More than 2,700 full season ticket packages have been sold. In addition, 1,000 five- and three-game mini-plan packages have been purchased, which represents the most in the school s history. The crowd of 6,367 against UNC Asheville was the largest opening night crowd in Ryan Center history. TERRELL WORKS AT ADIDAS NATIONS GLOBAL Senior Jared Terrell spent time in Houston in August as a college camp counselor for the adidas Nations Global event. He also served as a counselor a year ago at the event, held in the Los Angeles area. It was the fourth straight season that a Rhode Island player has been selected to participate at adidas Nations. E.C. Matthews (2014), Hassan Martin (2015), and Terrell and Kuran Iverson (2016) have also served as college counselors in the past. The event featured some of the country s top collegiate players participating as counselors. A multi-faceted international curriculum featuring NBA coaches and players, the college counselors provide invaluable insight and first-hand knowledge to the participants, illustrating the pressures, rigors and challenges that accompany the rise of any aspiring basketball star. COX RANKED AMONG NATION S TOP ASSISTANTS Rhode Island Associate Head Coach David Cox has been ranked among the nation s top 25 assistant coaches, according to LockDraft.com s Next Man Up rankings. Using a formula that encompasses recruiting rankings, coaching experience and offensive and defensive team efficiencies based on data from teamrankings.com, Lock Draft ranked Cox as the No. 23 assistant coach in the country. Cox, Gonzaga s Tommy Lloyd (No. 8), St. Mary s Marty Clarke (No. 24) and San Diego State s Justin Hutson (No. 25) were the only coaches from non-power 5 schools to make the top 25. Cox played a major role in Rhode Island s 2018 recruiting class, which was a top 25 recruiting class nationally. NATIONAL EXPOSURE ON TAP FOR THE RAMS Rhody s schedule includes 20 nationally televised games in 2017-18 regular season. The Rams will play nine games on the ESPN family of networks. In his piece Ranking the 10 best mid-major classes of the 2018 early period author Corey Evans offered high praise for URI s ability to sign Jermaine Harris, Brendan Adams, Tyrese Martin and Dana Tate. Dan Hurley was the lone coach in the A-10 to pull in two recruits on Rivals.com s top 150 national ranking. Associate Head Coach David Cox was the lead recruiter for Harris, Adams and Martin, while Assistant Coach Tyron Boswell was the primary recruiter for Tate. Evans wrote, Harris should solidify Rhode Island s frontcourt while Adams, who is the younger brother of St. Bonaventure star Jaylen, is oozing with talent and upside. Toss in hard-nosed power forward Tate and high flying wing Martin and URI boasts the top mid-major recruiting class this fall. Rhode Island s class was ranked ahead of Harvard and UNLV on the list, while fellow Atlantic 10 school Saint Louis was ranked fourth. Brendan Adams 6-3/190 G Calvert Hall College Associate Head Coach David Cox on Adams: Brendan had an outstanding junior season that resulted in a number of high-major offers. He has the size, athleticism and skill set to fit our system very well. He is a strong ball-handler and passer with a very high IQ. He also is a big-time shooter, and we obviously are very excited to have him. He is the younger brother of Jaylen Adams from St. Bonaventure, and we are hoping he can have the same type of impact here early in his career. He is without a doubt a rotational player, and he will have every opportunity to fight for a starting job with the departure of four senior guards. Jermaine Harris 6-8/220 F Rock Creek Christian Associate Head Coach David Cox on Harris: Jermaine Harris is a young man who has been on my personal radar since he arrived in Maryland from Atlanta, Ga. four years ago. He obviously is an extremely talented young man ranked in the top 75 recruits in the country. He is gifted with size, athleticism, mobility and a growing skill set. I give a tremendous amount of credit to his head coach, Chris Coles, for Jermaine s development. Jermaine was a very raw young man, and now you are talking about a young man who shot 40 percent from 3-point range on the Under Armour circuit and dunks everything around the rim. Jermaine has a college-ready body and college size. To land a recruit like this here in the Atlantic 10, beating out high-major schools such as Kansas, West Virginia, Miami, and schools of that nature was a big coup for us. Coach Hurley dove in during the spring and really did a great job of developing a relationship with Jermaine, and that played a tremendous role in us being able to bring him in. Tyrese Martin 6-6/195 F William Allen/Massanutten Military Associate Head Coach David Cox on Martin: Tyrese Martin is a young man from Pennsylvania who played on the Under Armour circuit for We R1. Coach Hurley and I both watched him during his junior year and really liked him. We both made our presence felt very strong for Tyrese. His coach and mentor played a major role in both his recruitment and his development as a player. Coach Hurley and I both developed a strong relationship with his coach, James Johns. We spent a lot of time over the summer trailing Tyrese around the country, and it paid dividends. We ended up beating out Seton Hall for his services, and we are extremely excited about him. At 6-6, he shoots the ball really well and has a college-made body. He is extremely versatile, and this is a young man we predict will make an all-defensive team because of that versatility on the defensive end. He will come in immediately and have an impact on this team as a rotational player who will compete for starting minutes. Dana Tate 6-7/210 F MacDuffie School Assistant Coach Tyron Boswell on Tate: Dana had a great junior season and is regarded as one of the more underrated players in the country. He fits Coach Hurley s system perfectly. He has improved his skill level tremendously over the past year. He is explosive with very good body control, and he can make plays off the bounce, as well as in the post. This is a tough, athletic forward who is a fearless competitor. He has established himself as a tenacious rebounder and he plays with a never-ending motor. Comfortable and confident in both a fast-paced game or a grind it out affair, Dana displays versatility and productivity that will be welcomed in Kingston. Dana has a college-ready body and will have an opportunity to come in and play right away. The relationship Coach Hurley and I have developed with Todd Quarles of Expressions Elite has continued to pay off.

Proven experience. Unwavering commitment. Lofty expectations. Those four elements are among the most vital to changing a culture and Dan Hurley continues to bring them to fruition each and every day he coaches at the University of Rhode Island. In his fifth season as head coach, Hurley s plan to completely overhaul the Rhode Island men s basketball program came to fruition as Rhode Island won the second Atlantic 10 championship in program history. Hurley led the Rams to an upset of Creighton in the first round, then pushed eventual Final Four participant Oregon to the limit in the Round of 32. Senior Hassan Martin was the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, while junior E.C. Matthews earned thirdteam all-conference honors and was the A-10 Championship s Most Outstanding Player. Freshman Jeff Dowtin became the fourth player in Hurley s first five years to garner A-10 All-Rookie honors. The Rams won 25 games for just the fourth time in program history. After a 23-win season and a return to the postseason in 2014-15, Hurley was named the United States Basketball Writers Association District I Coach of the Year. In April, 2015, Hurley and the University agreed to restructure his contract, reflecting the University s continued investment in the program and its commitment to future growth and success. The extension of the current pact runs through the 2021-22 season. A cornerstone of Hurley s success as a head coach is his commitment to individual improvement and development on and off the court. Since taking over as URI s 19th head coach on March 21, 2012, Hurley has not missed a single team practice or workout. He places an extremely high value on each and every minute of practice time. The 2015-16 campaign began with high expectations, but a series of injuries derailed the season. Rhody starters missed close to 35% of the season, beginning with the season-ending knee injury to preseason First Team All-A-10 E.C. Matthews midway through the first half of the season opener versus American. The injury bug also bit Hassan Martin - the A-10 s Defensive Player of the Year. Starters Kuran Iverson and Jarvis Garrett all missed time due to significant injury. Despite the setbacks, the 2015-16 Rams exhibited the trademark toughness of a Hurley-coached team. For the second straight season, Rhode Island led the Atlantic 10 and ranked among the national leaders in scoring defense, allowing just 64.8 points per game. Hurley s success has been bolstered by some of the highest-rated recruiting classes in program history. According to 247Sports.com, Rhode Island had the top crop of newcomers in the A-10 in 2013-14, led by A-10 Co-Rookie of the Year and Freshman All-American E.C. Matthews and All-Rookie team selection Hassan Martin. Rhode Island posted the league s second-best recruiting classes in 2012-13 and 2014-15. In 2014-15, Jared Terrell was an A-10 All-Rookie selection. The 2014-15 Rams spent much of year battling for their first-ever Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship. Rhody held a share of first-place into the month of March - the latest a URI team had held at least a share of first place. Rhody finished in a tie for second place, advancing to the conference championship semifinals. The Rams were a #3 seed in the 2015 National Invitation Tournament, downing Iona in the opening round before falling at eventual NIT champion Stanford. One of the calling cards for the 2014-15 Rams was their relentless effort on the defensive end of the floor. Rhode Island finished the season as the National Statistical Leader in 3-point Field Goal Percentage Defense, holding opponents to just 26.5% shooting from the perimeter. According to Ken Pomeroy s statistical analysis website KenPom.com, URI ranked ninth nationally in defensive efficiency, yielding 91.2 points per 100 possessions, while also ranking 10th in effective defensive field goal percentage (43.9%). Rhode Island was one of just three teams in 2014-15 to have at least a +9 overall win improvement and a +8 in conference wins. Over the past two seasons, Hurley has guided Rhode Island to a +15 win differential - one of the five best turnarounds in college basketball. Hurley s second year featured high-scoring guard Xavier Munford - who reached the 1,000 career point mark in just 51 games - and one of the youngest lineups in the country. URI fought to a 14-18 record, despite first-year players accounting for 35% of the team s scoring and 40% of the team s minutes. The 2012-13 season was Hurley s first season at Rhode Island and despite the team s record (8-21), the blueprint for success and the culture change was evident in every facet of the program - on and off the court. The Rams earned their first victory under Hurley in a double-overtime thriller at Auburn and also posted an OT win at Saint Louis in A-10 play. Fourteen of URI s losses were single-digit affairs, including seven by five points or less. Hurley arrived in Rhode Island after a successful two-year stint as head coach of Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y. While at Wagner, Hurley orchestrated a turnaround of the Seahawks program. Inheriting a program that had won just five games in 2009-10, he guided Wagner to 13 victories in his first season. The eight-win improvement was the nation s best among first-year head coaches in 2010-11. The Seahawks set several program records in 2011-12: wins (25); best overall start (14-3); best start in NEC play (14-2). The second-fastest coach in Wagner history to reach 30 wins, Hurley s team ranked among the national leaders in true road wins and road winning percentage. On Dec. 23, 2011, Hurley guided Wagner to a 59-54 victory at then #15 Pittsburgh. It was the first-ever victory over Pittsburgh by a NEC team, which had lost its last 70 matchups against the Panthers. It was also Wagner s first victory over a ranked opponent in over 33 years. In his two full seasons at the Staten Island school, Hurley compiled a 38-23 overall record and a 24-12 mark in Northeast Conference games. Prior to becoming an NCAA Division I head coach, Hurley was a highly successful head coach at St. Benedict s Prep in Newark, N.J. During his nine-year tenure at St. Benedict s (2001-2010), he compiled a 223-21 record, developed four McDonald s All-Americans, and coached the Grey Bees to four top five finishes in the national rankings. Hurley is a 1996 graduate of Seton Hall, where he was a standout guard for head coaches P.J. Carlesimo and George Blaney. He scored 1,070 career points while leading the Pirates to four straight postseason appearances (three NCAA, one NIT). A native of Jersey City, N.J., Hurley grew up in one of America s most well-known basketball families. His father, Bob, Sr., is the highly successful head coach at St. Anthony H.S. During the summer of 2010, he became just the second high school coach inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Hurley teamed with his older brother Bobby on the 1989 St. Anthony team that captured the National Championship. The All-American guard at Duke and an NBA lottery pick of the Sacramento Kings in 1993 served as an assistant under Dan Hurley as both Wagner and Rhode Island before being named head coach of the University of Buffalo in March, 2013. He began his coaching profession as an assistant to his father at St. Anthony during the 1996-97 season before serving a four-year stint on the Rutgers coaching staff from 1997-2001. Hurley and his wife Andrea are the proud parents of two sons; Danny and Andrew.
