Sporting Profile Issue 14: Watson PE Teachers Sporting Profile -Each week we would like to share with you what your PE teachers have been doing outside school: Mr Watson I have been heavily involved in sport from a young age. With a younger brother who also loved sport we would play sport every day. We were very competitive whether we were playing football, basketball, cricket, tennis. You name it we played it! Whilst at primary school I played football and rounders for the school. But at secondary school I then represented the school at many sports, tennis, hockey, and captaining the Football, Rugby, and cricket teams. At secondary school I really developed a passion for cricket, and this became my main sport which led to receiving county honours for Norfolk and three years later I captained the Norfolk U19 s. At college I studied a Diploma in Sports coaching with A-levels and began gaining qualifications in many sports. After I finished my A-levels, I headed to New Zealand via a tour of Barbados to live at a cricket academy for two English winters to train each day, to develop as a cricketer and coach the local school children. I did this for two winters before attending university. I studied at Anglia Ruskin University and was very fortunate to be accepted onto their Cambridge University Cricket centre for excellence. This enabled me to achieve a Sports Science degree whilst also being coached fulltime during my time as a student. Many of team mates are still currently playing professional cricket. Unfortunately I suffered three serious injuries which ruled me out of the opportunity to play against professional sides such as Essex, Sussex, and Kent. After university I returned back to Norfolk and began working for Norfolk Cricket board as a community cricket coach and for Norwich City Football club as a multi sports coach during the summer months. In the UK winters aided with my Level 3 qualification I travelled to the Southern Hemisphere for six months as a cricket professional, where I was employed to play cricket and to coach the local club, schools and representative sides. I spent two winters in Melbourne, three winters in Toowoomba (Aus), and most recently four winters in Auckland. Whilst there I was able to train with the New Zealand, Australia, England, West Indian, Pakistani, Indian and Zimbabwean squads as a net bowler especially during the 2015 World Cup. I was also very lucky to be sent to Kenya to coach their elite juniors back in 2007. As a player I represented Norfolk in the 3 rd tier of English cricket only retiring last year and I still currently represent Norwich in the ECB East Anglian Premier league. Over the years I have achieved many honours as a coach and as a player. Cricket has been a great way for me to meet many fantastic people and to travel the world visiting Spain, France, Holland, Barbados, Kenya, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand to either play, coach or watch cricket in. Highlight As a player winning the league in both Australia and New Zealand especially the 2 day grand final in Toowoomba for my club team taking 6 wickets and then hitting the winning runs. As a coach winning the Auckland titles with North Harbour and Westlake Boys. Lowlight: Being injured when due to play Kent and make my first class debut. Losing out on the National title due to run rate with the school team I taught. Sporting Hero s: Graham Thorpe Favourite batter as a child Kane Williamson Seen him progress from a 10 year old boy to World number 1 Test batsman. Mitchell Johnson Left arm quick bowler In next week s issue, we will look at the sporting profile of Mr Hedges. 5

U16s QUALIFY FOR NATIONAL SCHOOL REGIONALS! Huge congratulations to our U16 Girls Netball squad who have qualified for the regional round of the National Schools competition. The girls won every game in their group which put them in a strong position in the Semi. It was then make or break. Win and they made it, lose and they didn t. They were up against an incredibly strong Ranelagh team and were 7-2 down at the change of ends. What happened next was incredible, the girls rolled up their metaphorical sleeves and put it all on the line and turned the game on its head! They had done it. The first Maiden Erlegh team in living memory to make it past the abundance of private schools in Berkshire to reach the Regional round. Well done girls, Miss Grindey is incredibly proud of you. Role on January! Player of the tournament: Chisom Ezekwe 6

MIXED YEAR 9&10 DODGEBALL COMPETITION 7

NATIONAL SWIMMING SUCCESS After sitting on poolside for 4 hours at the Olympic pool before their race, our senior girls swim team finally raced the 4x50m medley relay with Olivia Neale on the Backstroke, Emily Neale on the breaststroke, Abbie Stewart on the fly and Molly Bates doing the Freestyle at the National Schools Swimming Finals. The girls did immensely well to even qualify for the final. Especially as we don t even have a swimming pool at school. Everyone swam really good times with a couple of PB s and they finished 28th in the whole country! We are incredibly proud of the girls for performing so well on the National stage once again! These girls are definitely ones to watch out for in the future! 8

COUNTY FOOTBALL REPRESENTATION Congratulations to Yr9s Lydia Vettese and Beau Burton who have both featured for the Berkshire county U14 football team in all their fixtures so far this season. Last night they hosted Essex in the National Cup and were just edged out 3-2. Both girls were excellent, Lydia was our player of the match for an outstanding defensive performance! EX PUPIL FOOTBALL SUCCESS Former student Rachel Newborough has once again been selected for the Senior Northern Ireland squad for their upcoming internationals. Well done Rachel! 9

GIRLS BASKETBALL A great start to the league season for both the Under 14 and Under 16 Girls basketball sides. The Under 14s with many players making their debut for the school put in a great performance against Sandhurst. Big thank you as well to those Year 10s who gave up time after school to help with the scoring and also cheer the Under 14s on. Nyah Reddyhough making her school debut was particularly impressive. An Under 16s side missing several key players due to trips and injuries showed great team spirit to overcome Sandhurst s Under 16 side the next afternoon. A great defensive display in the last quarter helped secure a hard fought victory. Everyone played their part but Becky Cooke led the team superbly as well as contributing several key scores. One, two, three Maiden Erlegh! 11

GOOD BYE FOR NOW Last week we said good bye to Mrs Thwaites who is now on maternity leave. We want to wish her the best of luck, we are already counting the days until she is back! GOOD BYE FOR GOOD Last week we also said good bye to our amazing TA Mrs Hiscox. She has helped the PE department so much over the years and was a key reason as to why our Multi Sports Club has been so successful. We wish her the very best for her new venture outside the world of education! 12

SENIOR KABADDI CLUB This week saw the first ever after school Kabaddi club take place with our senior boys. This sport that descends from Indian routes and is the National sport of Bangladesh is an incredibly physical and tactical game that tests both the body and mind. We had so much fun with the boys at the first session, so if any Year 12 or 13s are interested, it will take place every Tuesday after school in the gym. Come and get involved! 13

ADDITIONAL NOTICES As always, we love to hear about our students sporting success outside of school. Please keep us updated! You can email info/photos/videos to pn@maidenerleghschool.co.uk. If anyone would be interested in sponsoring this year s Sports Personality of the Year Awards Evening or one of our sports teams, please also get in touch. The first batch of GCSE and extra-curricular t shirts and tops have arrived. They can be collected from the PE office. If you would like to order one, you can also collect a letter from the PE office. Yr7/8 Boys Football & Yr7/8/9/10 Girls Netball students who have been spoken to about the end of season tour should receive letters next week. Speak to your PE teacher if you have any questions. The next Yr7 football training session will take place on Monday 27 th November after school on the astro. BERKSHIRE SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPS This year the annual county schools cross country championships will take place at Newbury Showground on Saturday 20 th January 2018. More details of this will be available in the coming weeks, but it is a date to be pencilled into the diary. We would really like a record number of Maiden Erlegh students to enter this year. This is a fantastic event not only for the experienced cross country runner, but also anyone wanting to test themselves in this discipline for the first time, so when letters come out, please do get involved! It would be great to see lots of you there! 14

GREEN PARK CHALLENGE & READING HALF MARATHON Last year we had a record number of Maiden Erlegh students take part in the Green Park Challenge and this year we want to get even more involved! The Green Park Challenge is a 3km running event that takes place the same morning as the Reading Half Marathon. This year s event takes place on Sunday 18 th March 2018. It costs 10 to enter. Each entrant will receive a free race t shirt, finishers medal, water bottle and goody bag. Every finisher automatically represents their school and schools win prizes based on how their students finish. But more importantly it gets young people to love running and encourages a physically active lifestyle. We would love for as many of you to be involved as possible! You can sign up here: www.readinghalfmarathon.com For our older students who are 17 by the 18 th March, why not really challenge yourself and attempt the Reading Half Marathon? This really is one to tick off the bucket list and is a fantastic course for a first timer (the fastest half marathon in the UK in 2016). If you decide to sign up, fantastic, let Mr Pringle know so that we can keep track of all Maiden Erlegh students taking part. www.readinghalfmarathon.com 15

RACE FOR LIFE 2018 Next summer, we will once again have a Maiden Erlegh team take part in the Race for Life to raise money for Cancer Research. We want an even bigger team than last year.
