Resort Information There are few single resorts to rival Alpe-d Huez for extent and variety of terrain. Alpe d Huez is a large, modern resort on a high, open, sunny plateau and was developed specifically for skiing. Possibly the most well known Tour de France mountain stage, Alpe d Huez in one of the French alps true dual season resorts. It is equally popular during both summer and winter with around 1 million tourists visiting during the summer months alone, including many cycling fans and those searching for some summer skiing on the glacier. Après Ski There is a decent amount going on after the lifts close in Alpe d Huez especially for a French resort. There are a wide range of bars which can get quite lively in peak season. There are a few British owned establishments some with open mike nights and live music. Alpe d Huez boasts an incredible range of skiing with just 50 km fewer pistes than both Val d Isère and Tignes combined. It is home to the longest piste in the Alps; the 16km long Sarenne, excellent off-piste, one of Europe s largest nursery areas, modern lifts and good mountain restaurants. The high altitude skiing up to 3300m ensure good snowfall.
Connecting Resorts Les Deux Alpes Les Deux Alpes is a large resort with a tall mountain and a large skiing area of 203km. It has high snow sure varied slopes and extensive off-piste skiing. There is a wide choice of affordable hotels in the town and good value is not hard to come by. The lift pass for Alpe d Huez allows you to ski for two days in Les Deux Alpes, but for a real experience you can go by helicopter. A cross valley lift is currently being carefully considered which would link the two resorts providing over 400km of pistes. Getting there Grenoble is the nearest international airport and is just 1 hour 30 minutes by car from Alpe d Huez. Chambéry is 1 hour 45 minutes away and Geneva 2 hours 30 minutes away. All have frequent services, particularly in the winter. Vaujany Situated just 40 minutes from Alpe d Huez and sharing in it s fantastic ski area, Vaujany is a small, charming and traditional village beautifully set on a sunny mountainside. Despite its size there is still plenty to do in both Summer and Winter with a swimming and spa complex, ice rink, walking, climbing, cycling and some good bars and restaurants.
Winter The Alpe d Huez Ski Area has a combined total of 250km of downhill skiing, with 135 individual pistes, served by 80 ski lifts. These ski lifts are fast and efficient getting you to the top of the mountain in good time. The lift pass for Alpe d Huez allows you to ski for a couple of days in some other resorts including Les Deux Alpes. The ski area is open from beginning December to the end of April and often provides good weather. In midwinter the runs are usually snow sure due to extensive snowmaking on the main runs above Alpe d Huez. All levels of skier ability, from beginner to expert, are well-catered for in Alpe d Huez. It provides large networks of green runs directly above the village making it a great place to start learning. Alpe d Huez is especially good for experts as not only does it have its fair share of blacks and off piste it also has the longest black in the alps which is in fact the longest of any type of slope in the alps. The Sarenne is 16km long and provides a challenging yet equally satisfying run to competent skiers.
Summer The first thing to mention about summer in Alp d Huez is of course the Tour de France which provides stage 18 of the worlds most famous bike race. It is therefore an ideal location for a fan to see the worlds best cyclists navigate the winding roads and 21 hairpin bends leading up to this dual season resort. You can, if you feel you are up to it, challenge yourself to try and replicate the stage. However if you would prefer a less strenuous activity there are 36 routes and over 250km of cycling trails across the mountains with varying degrees of difficulty to choose from. If cycling is not your thing then try There are around 230km of marked hiking trails with beautiful scenery and stunning lakes within walking distance of the resort. You can do anything from a gentle stroll to a three day hike doing it all on foot or getting some help from the lifts still in operation. If that isn t enough there is always fishing, mountain climbing, horse riding and many more activities that are sure to keep you more than busy during your stay.
