(Conte Forum) Atlantic Coast Conference Head Coach: Erik Johnson (UC San Diego, 1994) - Second Season The Hokies In its last game, Virginia Tech dropped a 70-60 decision at Hampton on January 1. The Hokies struggled in the first half, shooting less than 27% from the field and went into halftime trailing 38-23. Hampton continued its run in the second half and took its largest lead--19 points--with 14:38 left on the clock. However, the Hokies responded with a 20-3 run beginning at 13:26 when Monet Tellier completed a three-point play and Maddison Penn followed with a three-pointer on the next possession. Tech ended the run after cutting the lead to 52-50 with 6:18 to go on a layup from Hannah Young. The Hokies would not see the lead again, though, as Hampton responded to every ensuing Virginia Tech threat and ultimately held off the Hokies rally to capture the win. Uju Ugoka led the Hokies offense on the day with 16 points and nine rebounds in just 27 minutes, after being sidelined in the first half with foul trouble. Tellier also posted her second double-double in as many games with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Ugoka leads Tech on the season, averaging 19.1 points and 10.9 rebounds. The senior is one of four players in the Atlantic Coast Conference currently averaging a double-double. She ranks fourth in the conference in rebounding and third in scoring. Vanessa Panousis is adding 11.5 points and chipping in 4.5 assists. Tellier is averaging 10.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists. Virginia Tech is 2-0 under Coach Dennis Wolff in ACC openers. The Eagles Boston College cruised past Mount St. Mary s in its last game, 81-67, on Jan. 1 on the Eagles home court. Katie Zenevitch racked up a 29-point, 16-rebound performance, leading Nicole Boudreau (17), Kristen Doherty (13) and Lauren Engeln (10), who all scored in double-digits for BC. The Eagles also out-rebounded The Mount 45-28 on the day. The Hokies share a common opponent with BC during the non-conference slate in Hofstra, as the Eagles took down the Pride on the road, 80-63 in their second game of the season. Tech also got a win on Hofstra s home court, 77-72, in the Hokies second road game of the year. Doherty leads the Eagles in scoring this season with 14.9 points, while Zenevitch has chipped in 11.7 points to go with 7.0 rebounds. Engeln leads the team with 3.7 assists, while also averaging 8.2 points. The Series Virginia Tech leads the all-time series, 10-9, but the Eagles have won the last two meetings, both in Blacksburg. In last year s contest, a 53-46 BC win in Cassell Coliseum, Ugoka led the Hokies with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Tellier added 10 points. Doherty paced the Eagles with 15 points. The last game in Chestnut Hill, a January 5, 2012 contest, was a Tech victory, with Tellier racking up 15 points in the 38-35 win. Up Next: The Hokies will open their home ACC slate on Thursday, Jan. 9 against in-state rival Virginia. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va. During Wolff s second season guiding the Virginia Tech women s basketball team, the Hokies picked up a big win over a top-25 opponent, defeating then-19th ranked Florida State with a decisive 71-52 win over the Seminoles in Cassell Coliseum. The win snapped an eight game skid against FSU. Tech also improved in its overall and ACC record under Wolff s leadership. In his inaugural season with the Hokies, Wolff guided Virginia Tech to an improved ACC record that featured a milestone win over then-ranked No. 8 Maryland. Tech s win over the 2012 ACC Champion Terrapins marked the first time in over a decade that the Hokies have defeated a team ranked eighth or better and just the third time in team history. Wolff was also inducted in to the Basketball Old Timers of America Hall of Fame. Prior to accepting the women s head coaching position, Wolff served one season as the Director of Men s Basketball Operations & Assistant to the Head Coach for the Virginia Tech men s basketball program. He assisted head coach Seth Greenberg in the day-to-day operations of the basketball program and also took on additional duties to better reflect a change in NCAA rules governing the operations position. Under Wolff s guidance, the Terriers won three straight conference titles (2002-2004) and made four consecutive postseason appearances (2002-05) for the first time in school history. He was a threetime America East Coach of the Year and a two-time NABC District 1 Coach of the Year selection. I am very excited that Dennis Wolff has accepted our offer to become the head women s basketball coach at Virginia Tech, said Tech Director of Athletics Jim Weaver. Coach Wolff has a great history of successful head coaching experience, and I have had the opportunity to get to know and observe him during this academic year. I believe he fits very nicely into the Virginia Tech athletics family and that he will return our women s program to the winning ways of recent years. Wolff was 247-197 (.556) in 15 years at BU, and is the school s all-time leader in victories. Including two years at Connecticut College in the early 1980s, Wolff is 277-215 (.563) in 17 years as a head coach. Wolff arrived at BU following a four-year (1990-94) stint as an assistant coach under head coach Jeff Jones at the University of Virginia. Prior to his tenure at Virginia, Wolff spent four years (1985-89) as an assistant coach at Wake Forest and one year (1989-90) at Southern Methodist University. Wolff began his coaching career at Trinity College, a Division III school in Hartford, Conn., where he served as an assistant from 1978-80. At the age of 25, he was named the head coach at Connecticut College and guided the Camels to a two-year mark of 30-18, including a successful 16-8 record in 1980-81, his first year as a head coach. In 1982, he began his first of three years as an assistant coach at St. Bonaventure. In the last year, Wolff has been involved in the USO Operation Hardwood in Iraq and the USO Operation Hoop Talk in Afghanistan. A 1978 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Wolff was a two-year letterman under head coaches Dee Rowe and Dom Perno after transferring from Louisiana State University in 1975. A native of New York City, Wolff was a standout guard for Holy Cross High School. In recognition of his scholastic efforts, Wolff has since been inducted into the Holy Cross Athletic Hall of Fame. Wolff and his wife JoAnn have three children: Nicole, Matt, and Michael. Nicole, the 2002 McDonald s National Player of the Year, played basketball at the University of Connecticut and is currently a social worker in Boston. Matt played basketball at Boston University and now serves as a full-time assistant coach at American. Michael played ice hockey for Brown and currently lives and works in New York City.
