The Eagles had never lost to BC in Chuck Benson s tenure as head coach prior to Brevard s 63-60 win over Carson-Newman in Holt Fieldhouse last year. Prior to that, the Eagles had beaten BC by at least 20 four of the previous five meetings. - The Tornados are 0-2 in Holt Fieldhouse already this season. Brevard lost to Lander 75-63 and Southern Wesleyan 85-76 in the Carson-Newman Classic to start the season. - Carson-Newman has been a mystery wrapped in an enigma this season. The Eagles are shooting 51.2 percent from the field this season (fifth in the nation). C-N is one of 19 teams nationally with a 50 percent or better average from the field this year. Among those teams, 16 have four or fewer losses. The Eagles and Seton Hill (6-8) are the only teams in that list who have records of.500 or worse. - Brevard has lost five in a row, dating back to a 69-64 win over Coker. The Tornados have been outrebounded in each of those contests. - Demarcus Threatt has been Brevard s biggest threat this season. He has six, 20-point efforts on the year, including five consecutive at one point. He ranks third in the league in scoring with 19.5 points per game behind L-R s Keenan Palmore and C-N s Charles Clark. Threatt and Miles Leathers have hit double digits in every game this season for Brevard.

It marked the first time since a February 2011 trip to Wingate (a 71-46 final) that the Eagles had been held under 50 points. The Eagles failed to hit a threepoint attempt since Dec. 2014 and an overtime loss to Clayton State (C-N was 0-8 from three that day and 0-12 against the Bulldogs). Furthermore, the Eagles normally efficient guards were a collective 3-for-25 from the field in that game. Brooks at 1,000 Carson-Newman senior forward Carson Brooks became the 22nd Eagle all-time to hit 1,000 points for his career in C-N s loss at LMU. Brooks knocked down a 17-foot jumper late in the second half to push himself past the threshold. He now has 1,039 points in his career. Williams tears it up Sawyer Williams scored 37 points against LMU - the second highest mark of the Chuck Benson era. It s sandwiched between Ish Sanders school-record 51 against Mars Hill in 2011 and Antoine Davis 36 against Queens in 2012. Williams reset his career highs for points, field goals made (12), field goal attempts (19), free throws made (13) and free throws attempted (18). The Schedule Carson-Newman head men s basketball coach Chuck Benson debuted the defending SAC tournament champions 2015-16 schedule Saturday afternoon and Eagle fans will have 16 chances to see the Eagles within the confines of Holt Fieldhouse. The Eagles open up the season Nov. 13, playing host to the Carson- Newman Classic. The Eagles start play that Friday night with Southern Wesleyan before playing Lander Saturday evening. A third straight home game to start the year brings Johnson C. Smith to Holt Fieldhouse Nov. 18 before the Eagles play their first and only nonconference road game of the season. Carson-Newman will travel to face USC Aiken Nov. 21 after beating the Pacers by 22 last year in Holt Fieldhouse. The meeting with the Pacers, a team two years removed from an NCAA Final Four appearance, leads into the Eagles first SAC matchup of the season. Carson-Newman will go toe-to-toe with the team it beat to win the 2015 SAC tournament championship Lincoln Memorial. The meeting with the perennially-top-25 ranked Railsplitters will be the first time Carson-Newman has collided with its rivals from Harrogate prior to Christmas since the 2009-10 season when LMU eked out a 70-67 win over the Eagles on Dec. 5 that season. Sporting News Shows Love Carson-Newman s men s basketball program is listed outside the top 10 and as a school poised for a possible breakthrough for the 2015-16 campaign, according to the Sporting News in its annual men s basketball preview. The Eagles are the defending 2015 South Atlantic Conference tournament champions and return all five starters from last year s group that made its second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. C-N returns first team All-SAC and second team NABC all-region post player Carson Brooks (Knoxville, Tenn.) and all-freshman team and SAC tournament MVP Charles Clark both return to lead the Eagles. Brooks was Carson-Newman s leading scorer in his junior year averaging 15.1 points per game. Brooks needs just 67 points to join Carson-Newman s 1,000-point club. Carson-Newman Men s Basketball Pg. 2

Three-point and slam dunk champs Carson-Newman guards Christian Harris (Gold Canyon, Ariz.) and Andy Barnett (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) brought home gold hardware during Wednesday night s Mossy Creek Madness to kick off basketball practice in Holt Fieldhouse. Barnett defeated Sawyer Williams (Owenton, Ky.) in the championship of the dunk contest by a combined score of 88-85 to bring home the Golden Hammer. Harris defeated women s basketball player Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) 23-17 in a battle-of-the-sexes showdown to take home the Golden Ball. The three-point shootout looked to be Burstrom s. The senior fired in a 25 the high round of the day to get to the women s semifinals before checking in with a 19 to best teammate Kailyn Brooks (Lafayette, Tenn.) in the women s finals. However, Harris found the hot hand in the final round to clinch the win. Harris started off slow. His 13 was the lowest round of the semis to qualify for the men s title match. However, Harris began to heat up, posting a men s final 20 to get past Taylor Hawkins (Madisonville, Tenn.) and into the title matchup where he drilled nine of the first 10 shots he took to build a lead that Burstrom couldn t match. Defense and rebounding wins championships Carson-Newman laid claim to the South Atlantic Conference men s basketball tournament crown with defense and rebounding. The Eagles held LMU to 48 points on their way to the title. That s the fewest points ever scored in a South Atlantic Conference title game. On top of that, the Eagles kept the normally sound Railsplitters off the glass. Carson-Newman outrebounded LMU, top 10 in the country in rebounding margin, 51-31. It marked the first time the Railsplitters had been outrebounded by 20 since Lenoir-Rhyne did it in 2007. On the flipside, it marked the first time the Eagles had 50 rebounds since grabbing 51 against Knoxville College at the Pioneer Invite in 2012. That s also the last time the Eagles outrebounded a team by 20 or more. Carson Brooks, Sawyer Williams and Josh Rogers became the first trio of Eagles to grab 10 boards in a game this century. Clark s Star Shines Two days after being honored as the South Atlantic Conference tournament MVP, C-N men s basketball freshman guard Charles Clark (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) has been honored as the TSWA State Player of the Week. Clark averaged 24.3 points and 5.7 rebounds to earn MVP honors at the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Clark drilled 7-of-12 shots and finished with 18 points in the tournament opener against Coker College before netting a careerbest 33 points in the semifinals versus Newberry. The freshman guard made 10-of-16 shots from the field with three 3-pointers and also connected on 10-for-13 at the foul line. His field goal and free throw numbers were both career highs. Clark finished with 23 points and nine boards against third-ranked Lincoln Memorial in the championship game. It was the third conference tournament title in school history for the Eagles and the first since 2002. Clark joins junior forward Carson Brooks as the Eagles weekly TSWA honorees this season. Brooks won the honor the first week of the season after he set a SAC and school record by going 12-for-12 from the field against Barton. Double trouble with double-doubles Carson-Newman produced more double-doubles (12) than it did the last two years combined (8). That was on display in the Eagles SAC quarterfinal game with Coker when Carson Brooks and Sawyer Williams both had doubledoubles. Brooks went for 15 points and 11 rebounds while Williams had 17 and 11. It marked the first time Carson-Newman had a pair of players with double-doubles in the same game since Nov. 25, 2006 against Alabama- Huntsville when Andy Tipton and Scott Williams did it. C-N v. #1 Carson-Newman faced its first #1 ranked team in LMU since losing to Montevallo 93-53 during the 2004 season in a tournament at Kennesaw State. The Eagles are 3-12 all-time against #1 ranked teams after handling the Railsplitters 87-72. The Eagles lost to #1 Grambling in the NAIA playoffs 74-70 in 1963. During the 66-67 season, C-N did battle with top-ranked Kentucky Wesleyan twice, losing 90-57 before eeking out a 54-53 meeting in the second meeting. The 1971-72 season saw C-N face off with number ones on five occasions. The Eagles lost three times to Kentucky State and twice to Tennessee State. C-N collected its only other win over a top-ranked team during the 1973-74 season. The Eagles throttled Kentucky Wesleyan that year 110-81 to knock the Panthers out of the top spot. C-N would lose three times to Kentucky State during the 1974-75 season. It would be the last #1 Carson-Newman would face before 1984 when the Eagles lost to Charles Oakley s Virginia Union team 85-72. LMU occupied the top spot during the 2011-12 season when C-N swept the season series with the Railsplitters - however, Carson-Newman did not face LMU when the Railsplitters were the country s top-ranked team. Anderson ended the Railsplitters then 14-game win streak. Carson- Newman would beat LMU 64-61 in Harrogate four games later. Double-digit deficit overcome Carson-Newman s 14-point comeback over Lenoir-Rhyne is among the largest Eagle rallies over the last three seasons. C-N trailed by 17 in the second half against Lees-McRae before coming back for the program s 1,000th win to begin the 2012 season. The Eagles rallied from a 14-point first half deficit against Queens last year and from 14 down against Newberry and Brevard in the winter of 2013. Carson-Newman (18-14) fought tooth and nail with second-seeded and 23rd-ranked Montevallo (25-8) in the first round of the NCAA tournament but fell to the Falcons 74-69 Saturday afternoon at Tex Turner Arena. To get the conference tournament championship, to get to this stage is a monumental achievement on this team s part, head coach Chuck Benson said. We talk about giving more than is expected and I thought our guys did that throughout this year. Obviously wanted to play past round one, but our guys played with great pride and purpose today, we just came up short. An injury changed the complexion of the game for C-N. Carson-Newman led by 11 with 5:27 left in the first half on the heels of a 13-4 C-N run and a Sawyer Williams (Owenton, Ky.) layup. However, Carson Brooks (Knoxville, Tenn.) went down with a foot injury on the next possession. In his absence, Montevallo began chipping away at the Eagles advantage. By halftime, Montevallo had trimmed the Eagles lead to seven, 38-31. 3 Montevallo 74 25-8 Total 3-Ptr 04 Slaughter,Larry f 4-8 0-0 1-2 1 2 3 2 9 0 0 1 4 34 21 Fields,Malik f 1-3 0-0 1-1 2 1 3 4 3 3 2 0 0 21 03 Jackson,Shykeem g 5-9 5-7 0-0 0 4 4 2 15 0 0 0 0 38 22 May,Ryan g 4-13 2-9 1-2 2 4 6 0 11 4 1 0 1 34 25 Brown,Troran g 8-14 3-6 4-6 0 5 5 4 23 6 5 1 0 36 05 Johnson,Ibrahim 0-3 0-0 1-2 0 2 2 1 1 0 0 0 0 9 10 Key,Kimani 1-1 1-1 0-0 0 0 0 2 3 0 1 0 0 4 20 Orange,Bryant 3-7 0-0 3-4 1 3 4 1 9 0 3 1 1 24 Team 2 2 4 Totals 26-58 11-23 11-17 8 23 31 16 74 13 12 3 6 200 FG % 1st Half: 11-32 34.4% 3FG % 1st Half: 4-10 40.0% FT % 1st Half: 5-9 55.6% 2nd half: 15-26 57.7% 2nd half: 7-13 53.8% 2nd half: 6-8 75.0% Officials: R: Corey Haney, U1: Lee Kluttz, U2: Barry Fishman, ALT: Sean Technical fouls: Carson-Newman-None. Carson s absence was the turning point of the game, Benson said. Our guys gave great effort despite that. We had our fair share of injury issues this year, for him to go down so early in this game, it definitely impacted the outcome. I wish we could have finished the game with our true lineup out there. The Falcons outscored the Eagles 15-8 to begin the second half to tie the game at 46 on a pair of Troran Brown free throws. The Falcons would grab a 49-48 lead they would not surrender Carson-Newman Men s Basketball Pg. 5

Chuck Benson enters his sixth season as head coach of the Carson-Newman program and ninth season overall in Mossy Creek. Benson, a 1991 graduate of C-N, spent four seasons as associate head coach of the Eagles before being named head coach. Year five was unprecedented for Benson. The Eagles head man guided Carson-Newman to its first back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances on the strength of the Eagles first SAC tournament title run since 2001-02. Along the way, Carson-Newman crushed Lincoln Memorial on two occasions. One, when the then-number one ranked team in the entirety of the United Statew of America and DIvision II LMU Railsplitters were riding a 20-game win streak, the Eagles handed LMU its first loss of the season on the Railsplitters home court with a 77-62 victory. Then again, Carson-Newman lambasted LMU 63-48 in the SAC title game when the Railsplitters were ranked number three in the country. In the SAC title game, the Railsplitters 48 points were the fewest allowed in SAC title game history while the Eagles +20 rebounding margin was the second largest in title game history. Carson Brooks became the third Eagle under Benson to earn all-region honors while Charles Clark became the first C-N player to earn All-Freshman team honors from the SAC since 2010-11. In his fourth season at the Creek, Benson took Carson-Newman back to the promised land. The Eagles went to their first NCAA tournament in 12 years and their first in program history by virtue of an at-large bid. Utilizing a suffocating zone defense, the Eagles took home victories over a top 10 Lincoln Memorial club and had wins over teams from Anderson, Wingate and Barton who all received votes in the NABC top 25 at various points during the season. The Eagles spent five weeks ranked in the NCAA Division II top 25 during the 2013-14 season, the most for Carson-Newman in the program s history in Division II. In fact, Carson-Newman has been ranked in the NABC top 25 just five weeks total outside of the 2013-14 season. C-N was led by all-region performers Antoine Davis and Ish Sanders who both finished in the top 10 in scoring in program history. Davis concluded his career with 1,526 and Sanders with 1,922 points. Sanders is the program and conference s leader all-time leader in made threes with 343 treys. Benson also hit a personal milestone, collecting his 200th career victory with a win over Anderson. Benson has coached six individuals who have earned either preseason or postseason All-America accolades. Davis and Sanders earned such honors at Carson-Newman; Ed Perkins, Desmond Allison, Johnny Goodman and Marcus McNair picked up the accolades for Benson at Martin Methodist. In 2012-13, Benson earned SAC coach of the year honors after guiding C-N to a 12-6 mark in conference play and a 20-8 mark overall in year three. The 12 conference wins are Carson-Newman s most since 2001-2002 when it went to the NCAA tournament. Meanwhile, it was C-N s first 20-win season since to 2002-2003 year. The 2012-13 campaign was one of many firsts for Benson. The Eagles had their longest win streak to start a season (five games) since the 1997-1998 season. It was tied for the third best start in school history. Benson also helped coach two remarkable seasons by C-N stars Antoine Davis and Ish Sanders. Davis earned SAC player of the year honors as well as All-America honors from D-II Bulletin. Davis lead the South Atlantic Conference in scoring (19.0 points per game) and made field goals (170). A two-time South Atlantic Conference player of the week award winner, Davis became the first C-N player since 2003-2004 with multiple 30-point games in a single season. Davis and Sanders were both preseason and postseason first team All-SAC selections. A SAC Player of the Week award winner, Sanders turned in four consecutive 25-point performances, the longest such streak at Carson-Newman this century. He was one of three SAC players with consecutive 25-point performances, but the only player who has gone beyond two. Sanders set a season high with 33 points in a home win against then league-leading Anderson. The shooting guard went 11-for-22 from the field and 9-for-18 from three in that game. It was the fourth most threes in a single game in SAC history. In that contest, Sanders set Carson-Newman s single season record for three pointers made - the previous record was 86, Sanders finished the year with 99. In year two for Benson, the Eagles finished 15-14 overall and 8-10 in the SAC. The 2011-2012 campaigned was highlighted by a sweep of archrival and nationally ranked Lincoln Memorial. Benson s Eagles knocked the fifth-ranked Railsplitters down on the road 64-61 - ending a 30-game home winning streak for LMU - on Jan. 25 before coming back to Holt Fieldhouse and turning the trick again with a 77-69 victory on senior day. The Eagles also ended a near decade long home losing streak to Tusculum, beating the Pioneers 78-64 before nearly 900 fans at Holt Fieldhouse. Under Benson s tutelage, sophomore stars Antoine Davis and Ish Sanders each finished the year as second team All-SAC performers. Sanders locked down a SAC Player of the Week honor for the week of Dec. 12 after leading the Eagles to wins over Tennessee Wesleyan and Lees-McRae. Sanders averaged 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting an efficient 50-percent from the field. He also had an assist-to-turnover ratio of nearly 3-to-1. Davis and Sanders both finished their junior seasons with 487 points each. Benson s Eagles finished the year ranked in the top 30 nationally in three pointers made per game with 8.2, while Sanders ranked 34th in the nation and third in the SAC for the stat. The Eagles also took care of the ball, while forcing turnovers as well. Carson-Newman ranked second in the SAC in turnover margin for Benson s second year. The Eagles came on strong at the end of Benson s first season in 2010-11. After entering Christmas break with a 3-7 record, C-N turned things around to go 8-8 down the stretch, including five straight road wins. The Eagles turned heads by finishing the regular season in a tie for fourth in the conference standings with an 8-10 mark after being picked ninth in the preseason poll. C-N s season came to an end with a first round loss to No. 13 Lincoln Memorial in the South Atlantic Conference tournament, finishing the year at 11-16 overall. C-N turned in several memorable moments during Benson s first year at the helm. The Eagles claimed quality road wins at Anderson, an Elite Eight participant, and Brevard, the defending conference champion. The Eagles also defeated rival Maryville College for the first time since 2006. Freshman guard Ishmael Sanders thrived leading the team in scoring as he set a conference record with 51 points against Mars Hill and broke a school record by making 11 3-pointers against the Lions. Guard Bradley Tumer also broke the conference s single game record for assists with 19 against Newberry. Sanders and guard Antonio Sullivan each earned SAC Player of the Week honors, while Sanders was named to the SAC All-Freshman team. As a team, the Eagles proved to be one of the top defensive squads in the SAC as they finished the year as the league leader in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.322) and third in field goal percentage defense (.428). Academically at Carson-Newman, Benson has seen 88 percent of players who have played out their eligibility graduate and get a degree in five years or less. Benson s two-decade career in the collegiate ranks extends much further than Mossy Creek, including five seasons in the Southeastern Conference at the University of Tennessee, as well as building Martin Methodist College into a national contender in his seven seasons as head coach at the NAIA Division I institution. Prior to joining the Carson-Newman staff in 2006, Benson was an assistant at Tennessee from 2003-05 after Vols head coach Buzz Peterson hired him to help bolster recruiting efforts. Tennessee earned a National Invitational Tournament bid for the 2003-04 season. The 49ers were in the preseason Top 25 and earned an NIT bid during his one season as an assistant. In April of 2006, Benson accepted a position at UNC-Wilmington and served as an assistant there until he received the call from Eagles head coach Dale Clayton in August of 2006 with the opportunity to come back to Carson- Newman. Benson brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Eagles, including a seven-year stint (1996-2003) as head coach at Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tenn. The RedHawks were a part of a strong Transouth Athletic Conference, which included three schools (Belmont, Birmingham Southern and Lipscomb) that would eventually become NCAA Division I programs. During his time in Pulaski, Benson led the RedHawks program to unprecedented heights, compiling a 137-95 record. Martin Methodist averaged 20 wins a year over his last six seasons and was listed in the NAIA national rankings for 40 weeks from 1999-2003, including a No. 4 ranking in December of 2002. Benson guided the Red- Hawks to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament berths from 2001-03, including back-to-back appearances in the Sweet 16 in 2001 and 2002. Four Martin Methodist players earned NAIA All-America honors during Benson s tenure, which was a first for the small rural institution with less than 500 students enrolled. Off the floor, 16 men s basketball players graduated from Martin Methodist with Benson at the helm. He also implemented the NAIA s Champions of Character initiative as a way to emphasize character both on and off the court to his student-athletes. Aware of his responsibility to the institution as a whole, Benson served on one SACS accreditation committee and was a member of the Vice President for Academic Affairs selection committee. Prior to his start in the collegiate ranks, Benson created the Tennessee Travelers summer basketball program in 1987 and coached within the organization during his college years. Benson spent the 1990-91 season as the head boys basketball coach at Morristown Covenant Academy in Morristown, Tenn. The team advanced to the championship game in the TANAS State Tournament while compiling an 18-10 overall record. Starting in the fall of 1991, Benson spent time on staff at Lincoln Memorial University (1991-92), Carson-Newman (1992-93), and Tennessee (1993-96). While at Tennessee, Benson was a part of a National Invitational Tournament appearance (1995-96) and helped produce two top 20 recruiting classes. A native of Newport, Tenn., Benson graduated from Cocke County High School in 1987 and earned a B.A. degree in History from Carson-Newman in 1991. He earned a Master s degree in Educational Curriculum and Instruction from Lincoln Memorial University in 1996. Benson and his wife Tabbatha reside in Jefferson City. They have one daughter, Abby and one son, Jake, with another son, Cooper, who arrived two weeks prior to the Eagles opener.
