Reducing Nonproductive Time Pipe Recovery Services Solving challenges.

Pipe Recovery Services Pipe Recovery Services Halliburton offers a wide range of free point indicators, severing tools and experienced crews to help reduce NPT and extra costs caused by stuck pipe SITUATION Reduce cost of pipe recovery in every stage of a well s life Pipe recovery is a common and potentially expensive process in every phase of operating a well. When drilling, formation cave-ins, differential sticking and key seating can cause the drillstring to stick. Before drilling can continue, the stuck drillpipe must be recovered. During completion and intervention operations, tubing, coiled tubing and packers can stick, causing production delays and jeopardizing the integrity of the well. Pipe recovery is commonly used at the end of a well s life, as well. Operators may choose to recover as much casing as possible either to be recycled as scrap or for regulatory compliance. CHALLENGE Pipe recovery can be a long and expensive process The first step in recovering stuck pipe is to locate the depth at which the pipe is stuck - the free point. This is the target for further pipe recovery operations. Using a conventional free point tool, this can be a lengthy process, with frequent stops and starts to apply stretch and torque, and take measurements. Once the free point is found, a recovery plan can be formulated. This may include back-off, cutting operations or other means. For example, the Halliburton Free Point Tool (see next page) can reduce the time needed to find the free point of stuck pipe by up to 50%. And, unlike most companies, Halliburton has trucks, skids and crews dedicated to pipe recovery for quick response to a customer s needs. HAL35567 1

Pipe Recovery Services HAL35569 A REVOLUTIONARY ADVANCE IN FREE POINT INDICATORS Traditional tools require multiple starts and stops to measure and identify the free point. But the Halliburton Free Point Tool uses new technology to locate the free point with just one or two logging passes depending on the recovery method planned. This exclusive technology won the 8th Annual World Oil Award for Best Drilling Technology in 2009. Above the free point, the stretched pipe alters the magnetic field and creates a clear difference between the before and after recordings. SAVE TIME AND MONEY ON PIPE RECOVERY OPERATIONS The Halliburton Free Point Tool doesn t require multiple stationary measurements with stretch and torque applied at each stop. As a result, it can reduce the rig time required for free point determination by as much as 50%. Below the free point, the pipe cannot be stretched, so the before and after measurements match. And, unlike other free point indicators, the Halliburton Free Point Tool can be operated by a wireline technician, so there s no need to wait for a pipe recovery expert. HAL24172 AVAILABLE WHEN AND WHERE NEEDED The Halliburton Free Point Tool can operate in most downhole environments. Additionally, the tool can be deployed to operate from almost any electric line unit and is safe to transport by helicopter for urgent pipe recovery situations. Comparing Magnetic Fields While traveling downhole, the Halliburton Free Point Tool records the magnostrictive properties of the drillpipe, tubing or casing (black line). When travelling uphole, the pipe is stretched, and the magnetic properties are recorded again (red line). Improved Wellsite Safety The Halliburton Free Point Tool helps reduce exposure to rig floor hazards by requiring a single stretch and torque application to the pipe. This results in improved safety for the entire rig crew as well as reduced rig time spent working the pipe. HAL17085 2

Halliburton Offers a Variety of Free Point Tools In addition to the Halliburton Free Point Tool, Halliburton also offers a variety of traditional free point indicators. Image courtesy of GE Oil & Gas TRADITIONAL FREE POINT TOOL The most widely used free point tools use mechanical anchors and strain gauge measurements to detect pipe movement. A series of stationary measurements are taken at predetermined depths to determine the free point of the pipe. ACOUSTIC FREE POINT INDICATION The free point can also be located using a Radial Cement Bond Logging (RCBL) tool from Halliburton. This tool uses one omnidirectional transmitter and multiple receivers to record the acoustic attenuation caused by stuck pipe. BACK-OFF OPERATIONS Once the free point has been identified, the next challenge is to separate the free pipe from the stuck pipe. A back-off is one recovery method. Back-off operations range from simple straight holes to complex deviated well procedures. HAL35566 String Shot Rod The String Shot is positioned at the free pipe depth determined by the Free Point run. Detonating cord produces a shock effect at the connection. This allows the pipe to be recovered so further operations can begin. Acoustic Free Point Indication HAL24048 3

Pipe Recovery Services A Range of Explosive Cutters for Any Application HAL35561 In some cases, recovery operations require severing the pipe before the next step can begin. Some of the most common tools use explosives to cut through the pipe. This allows the free pipe to be pulled out of the well so that recovery operations on the stuck pipe can begin. These tools have a long and successful history of use in the field. Jet Cutters JET CUTTERS Halliburton offers a wide variety of jet cutters that can be used in a range of applications, from 1-inch coiled tubing to 95 8-inch casing. Each cutter is specifically designed for precision cutting of a particular pipe size and weight. This minimizes the amount of explosives needed and results in a very clean cut. Jet cutters can be deployed on electric line, slickline and coiled tubing for conveyance flexibility. Split Shot Cutters HAL35565 SPLIT SHOT CUTTER The Split Shot Cutter uses a linear shaped charge to split tubing and casing collars vertically. Split Shot Cutters are available in various sizes, lengths and temperature ratings and can be used for most tubing and casing sizes. (Split Shot is a registered trademark of Owen Oil Tools.) JRC DRILL COLLAR SEVERING TOOL The Drill Collar Severing Tool is an effective last resort for severing drillpipe and drill collars. An explosive collision device creates a high-energy blast capable of shearing large, heavyweight drill strings. HAL35549 JRC Drill Collar Severing Tool 4

Pipe Recovery Services Alternatives for Precision Cutting In addition to the cost-effective explosive cutters, Halliburton also offers high-precision options. These tools typically create a much smoother cut than explosive cutters, which helps the recovery of stuck pipe. The explosives used in these tools can be reduced or, in some cases, eliminated altogether to address transportation and regulatory concerns. CHEMICAL CUTTERS These tools use chemicals that react with fluids in the well to cut through pipe. This creates a much cleaner cut than explosive jet cutters for easier retrieval of stuck pipe. Chemical cutters are available for applications from coiled tubing to 85 8-inch casing. (Chemical Cutters manufactured by Chammas Cutters Inc. or Pipe Recovery Systems Inc.) HAL35568 HAL35546 RED Detonators for Maximum Security Many of the tools in this brochure are compatible with the RED (Rig Environment Detonator). RED products do not contain primary explosives and are insensitive to many common electrical hazards found at the wellsite, including RF communications, welding and cathodic protection. This improves wellsite safety and allows normal rig operations to continue uninterrupted during pipe recovery. Pipe recovery tools compatible with RED initiators include: String Shot Rods Jet Cutters Drill Collar Severing Tools Chemical Cutters Business card slits on pocket
