Updated 09/14/2017 Champion of Champions Handbook University of Missouri Bands October 14, 2017 Contact on October 14: Pete Zambito, MU Bands Event Coordinator (573) 268-6190 1. Adjudication Similar to BOA competitions, MU will provide a panel of four major caption judges. Scoring sheets/rubrics will be made available to you prior to the competition. The weight of this scoring system places 60% of the value on music and 40% on visual, and at the same time, 60% of the score is within the area of General Effect and 40% within the Performance area. The two Music Performance judges have their scores averaged for a total of 20 points. The two Visual Performance judges have their scores averaged for a total of 20 points. The Visual General Effect judge s score is not averaged with any other score. The two Music General Effect judges scores stand by themselves and are not averaged. A. Music Performance 20 points average of two judges in this caption Individual... one judge on the field Ensemble... one judge in the press box B. Visual Performance 20 points average of two judges in this caption Individual... one judge on the field Ensemble... one judge in the press box E. Visual General Effect 20 points... one judge in the press box F. Music General Effect 40 points total 20 points possible from each judge... two judges in the press box All judges comments will be made available via Dropbox adjudication forms will include scoring only.

2. Timing and Procedures A. Bands will be scheduled at 15-minute intervals (see Appendix A for the complete schedule). How this 15 minutes is used is at the discretion of the band director, within the following time parameters: 3. Band Arrival a. Timing will begin with the first note of music or the first step by any member of the band. The contest personnel in charge of timing will be located at the front of the field. Judging will begin after the formal announcement is made. Pre-shows are not judged, but are included in the overall timing of your show. b. See Appendix A for the list of performance and warm-up times. A. Please notify Abby Rehard in the MU Large Instrumental Ensembles Office (573-882-3439 or rehardac@missouri.edu) of your intended arrival time by October 6, 2017. This notice will ensure that your Band Guide is available to meet you and your band upon arrival. B. All bands must enter off of Stadium Drive onto Mick Deaver Memorial Drive and will stop at our Welcome Tent to receive instructions on where to park. We strongly encourage you to send your pit equipment directly to the Pit Equipment Staging Area located in Lot G after checking in at the Welcome Tent. Lot G is accessible from Champions Drive. C. Porta-Potties are available in Lots M and N, and bathroom access is available in the Hearnes Center. 4. Parking A. All buses and equipment vehicles will park in Lot M and N (see attached map in Appendix B). General parking is available in Lots C, I, J, K, O, and P. Lots A and B are available for handicapped parking. Please observe any spaces in these lots that are blocked off for MU personnel parking. B. Parking passes for the number of buses and equipment vehicles indicated on your application will be given to the director at the Welcome Tent. If this number needs to be updated, please notify Abby Rehard in the MU Large Instrumental Ensembles Office (573-882-3439 or rehardac@missouri.edu) by October 6, 2017 5. Entrance and Exit A. All bands, including pit/front ensemble, will enter the performance area from the southeast lower stadium entrance and exit through the southwest lower stadium gate. See enclosed map for details. 2

B. Bands may use a single tap to move into the starting position no cadences. This tap may only be executed on a single drum. Bands may use a percussion cadence to exit, but all sound must cease as soon as the field is cleared. C. Any vehicle transporting equipment will enter the field through the southeast entrance. Vehicles must follow the paved track around the north end of the stadium and wait in the designated area. Due to the turf on Faurot Field, NO VEHICLES are allowed on the turf. Vehicles will exit through the southwest gate with their band. See enclosed map for details. Note: It is suggested that equipment vehicles, sideline percussion equipment, and any other pre-staged materials report to the southeast field entrance 15 minutes ahead of the band. Time permitting, the Field Manager can send equipment personnel around the track early in order to aid in the pre-staging process. D. Wristbands and lanyards will be provided in the welcome packet (distributed by your band host upon your arrival). Wristbands allow your students and staff entry to the stadium. The amount of event passes provided are determined based on the numbers you submitted on your application. If you have not already done so, please review the Band Summary (previously sent via email) and notify Abby Rehard at 573-882- 3439 or RehardAC@missouri.edu of any changes by October 6 th. See Section 9 of this handbook for details pertaining to staff, chaperone, and driver admittance to the festival. 6. Field Rules and Penalties Timing Entry/Exit Boundary Cadence 0.1 point per 3 seconds or infraction, per violation 0.1 point per violation; maximum of 2 points 1.0 point per violation A. There will be no penalty for staff members, directors, or support staff, entering the performance area during their band s performance. However, such staff should only be used to support props or handle medical emergencies. Actual active participation as a player or marcher in the bands performance is not allowed. Evidence of violation will result in disqualification. B. During performance, no powered vehicles, fire batons, or hazardous devices are allowed. The penalty is disqualification. 7. Competing Directors and Staff Information A. Competing Band Directors and Staff Members may not contact any judge during the competition. Any verbal remarks or disrespect shown to competing bands will be grounds for penalty. Any warm-up (playing prior to entering the stadium, percussion included) in 3

an area other than the designated warm-up areas will be grounds for penalty. B. Any infraction or improper conduct for which no rule is given may be grounds for warning, penalty, or disqualification at the discretion of the contest director. The contest director will review any conduct that may be considered unsafe to participants, spectators, or festival staff. They have complete authority to prohibit or penalize such conduct. PENALTY: 0.1 minimum. C. Your set-up crew (parents, non-marching band members, etc.) is encouraged to sit on the field-level benches during your band s performance. Benches will be placed on the asphalt track area near the stands on the press box (west) side. Please direct all rule inquiries to: Dr. Amy M. Knopps, Contest Director University of Missouri 202 Loeb Hall Columbia, MO 65211 573-882-3439 (telephone) 573-884-5515 (fax) knoppsa@missouri.edu 8. Band Performance Information A. When you arrive at Memorial Stadium, a band guide will meet your buses, escort you throughout the day, and stay with your band until you no longer require their services. Your guide will escort you to the warm-up and performance areas, as well as assist with your exit from the performance area following your band s performance. B. You or your drum major(s) will check into the performance area at the southeast stadium band entrance gate during the performance slot immediately preceding your performance time. The Field Manager will move your band into their starting position when the band on the field has reached the seven-minute mark in their performance time. You will move into your starting set as the band preceding you is exiting the field. C. After your warm-up, the Field Manager will signal the press box, and you will hear the following announcement: The next band of the day is the High School Marching Band Are the Judges ready?.drum Major(s) is your band ready? (after a pause for the drum major salute). High School Marching Band, you may take the field in competition. You should begin your show on that command. Please notify our office (rehardac@missouri.edu or 573-882-3439) by October 6 th if you have a pre-show script or special timing requests for the announcer. 4

D. Following your performance, your band will exit from either (a) the front sideline or (b) the field right end zone (south). Your band guide will escort you from the field through the southwest field gate. After this point, only those persons with a wristband will be allowed back into the stadium without paying admission. Band members should receive their wristband from their director after the performance. The wristband will admit them back into the stadium, regardless if they are in uniform. E. Although you will be marching in a collegiate football stadium with collegiate hash marks, there will be temporary high school hash marks placed on the field in white tape. These hashes will be present every five yards, not every yard. Collegiate hash marks are 4 steps (32 total) further in towards the middle of the field. Also in reference to the numbers painted on the field, the bottoms of the numbers are eleven steps from the sideline while the tops of the numbers are fourteen steps. 9. Performing Band Regulations A. Physically handicapped personnel will not be penalized. B. A person who becomes ill or injured may leave the field, with or without staff assistance, in any direction at any time without penalty. C. Each band will be scheduled to use the Marching Mizzou Practice Field as a warm-up area (for 15 minutes) 1 hour prior to their performance time. Please note that the practice field is now located approximately 2 blocks southeast of the old practice field. D. During the 45-minute slot immediately prior to your performance, you will be escorted by your band guide to Faurot Field to assemble for your performance. Please move promptly and efficiently to the field, as the stadium is approximately 6-7 blocks from the warm-up area. Please stay with your band guide and exercise caution when crossing intersections. You must be at the gate, ready to perform 15 minutes prior to performance. E. Band Directors may use any amount of time prior to their practice field time for playing a warm-up in their bus area. Directors are encouraged to be respectful of bands on the warm-up field and to manage additional warm-up at distances as far from the Marching Mizzou Practice Field as possible. If warm-ups other than those on the Marching Mizzou Practice Field cause unnecessary interruption to the band that is scheduled for the actual warm-up area (Marching Mizzou Practice Field), the offending band will be notified. In extreme situations bands may be penalized for excessive violation, all at the discretion of the Contest Director. F. All wind players, drumline, and auxiliaries will have access to the south side of the stadium via the ramp near Truman s Terrace on the southeast side of the stadium. We strongly encourage you to use the Pit Equipment Staging Area located in Lot G prior to your performance. 5

G. Bands may use a motorized ATV, lawn tractor, or golf cart (no automobiles, trucks, or large tractors allowed) to move pit equipment to the performance area. ABSOLUTELY NO VEHICLES ARE ALLOWED ON THE TURF! All powered vehicles MUST stay on the asphalt track surrounding the field. H. An electrical power supply will be available for use on the front sideline. However, we do not provide extension cords. I. An ambulance with registered EMTs will be on duty in the southwest entrance of Faurot Field throughout the entire contest. Clinic, emergency transportation, or hospital costs will be the responsibility of the competing band. J. It is expected that each band will provide adequate supervisory personnel to ensure proper behavior of their students. This expectation includes respectful behavior in the stands during performances. K. Event passes for you, your staff, bus drivers, equipment vehicle drivers, chaperones/setup crew, and students will be given to you by your band guide upon arrival to Memorial Stadium. Directors, staff, and bus drivers will receive a lanyard. Equipment vehicle drivers, chaperones/set-up crew, and students will receive a wristband. These passes will be distributed at the ratio of 1 chaperone/set-up crew member to every 10 students, 1 driver per bus, and 2 drivers per equipment vehicle (based on the numbers provided in your application). All seating is General Admission. Please distribute all lanyards and wristbands upon arrival as they will be required for entrance to the stadium. L. Lost articles will be taken to the Ticket Office at the spectator entrance (north stadium) to Faurot Field. M. Emergency Instrument Repair will be provided by BAC Music Center. N. A director/staff/bus driver hospitality room will be available in the press box, sponsored by Meyer Music. The elevator to the press box is located at Gate 5W (section F/G). Coffee, sodas, and snacks will be available, as well as comfortable contest viewing. This area is for directors, staff, and bus drivers only (please wear the lanyard provided upon arrival) and will only be available during preliminary competition. 10. Awards Ceremonies A. For 2017, there will be one preliminary competition awards ceremony at 4:30 PM. During the Marching Mizzou exhibition performance at 4:15 PM, representatives from all participating bands should proceed to the southwest corner of Faurot Field (the exit gate for performing bands) for the awards ceremony. B. If two or more bands have a tie in their final score, the higher placement will be awarded to the band with the higher raw score (subtotal before penalties). If after using this criterion a tie still exists, the highest General Effect total will be used to determine 6

placement. This procedure will only be applied in class champion and finals competitions. When bands achieve the same (tie) score in prelims, and when such score causes a placement tie for the last position advancing to the finals competition, each band with the tied score will advance. C. Score sheets, judges comments for prelims (provided via Dropbox), and a prelims recap sheet will be available on the field after the preliminary competition awards ceremony. We ask that each band send a director/staff member to the front of the field following the preliminary awards ceremony to pick up packets. If you are unable to pick-up your sheets, they will be mailed to you after the contest. D. Finals competition sheets and judges comments will be available on the field during the Finals awards ceremony. Finals packets will include recap sheets from finals. E. The preliminary awards ceremony will include the following, in this order: 1. Announcement of band rankings and scores in each division. For 2017, bands in MSHSAA Class 2A, 3A, and 4A will be considered one division. 2. Announcement of bands qualifying for finals competition. Bands will be listed by classification, in alphabetical order. No scores will be announced. Directors of bands qualifying for finals competition will be asked to meet briefly on the field following the preliminary awards ceremony to draw for finals performance times. The five lower scoring bands advancing to finals will draw for the first five finals performance time slots. The five higher scoring bands advancing to finals will draw for the last five performance time slots. 11. Finals Procedures A. The first place band in each division (of at least three bands) automatically qualifies for finals. Divisions are determined by your school s MSHSAA classification; schools from outside Missouri will be placed in the MSHSAA classification based on enrollment. Classes with more than seven bands are divided into separate but equal divisions. For 2017, those in MSHSAA Class 2A, 3A, and 4A will be considered one division (i.e. the top scoring band from these three combined classes will advance to finals) and Class 5A will be divided into 5A Black and 5A Gold. B. Additional bands will be included based on the top prelims scores, regardless of classification/division. C. During the last finals band s performance, representatives from finals bands should report to the southwest corner of Faurot Field (the exit gate for performing bands) to assemble for the Finals Awards Ceremony. D. The Finals Awards Ceremony will award trophies to all Finals participants, beginning with tenth place and concluding with the announcement of the Champion of Champions Overall Grand Champion. Caption awards will be presented for Music Performance, Visual Performance, Music GE, and Visual GE. 7

12. Tickets, Merchandise, Video & Photo A. General Admission seating is located in the west stadium seating area only (press box side). VIP Admission is available in the enclosed 5th level of the Press Box. Please note that no food or drink (except for water) may be brought into the stadium. Admission tickets allow exit and re-entry throughout the entire day. ALL DAY EVENT TICKETS General Admission $10.00 VIP Admission (very limited number) $25.00 B. Additional DVDs of performances will be available for purchase from mrvideoonline.com. Order forms will also be available at the event. E. Concession stands will be open in the main concourse of Memorial Stadium throughout Prelims and Finals performances.
