NEWSPAPER GUILD LOCAL 82: PACIFIC NORTHWEST NEWSPAPER GUILD COLLECTION Papers, 1937-1985 (Predominantly, 1950-1976) 6.5 linear feet Accession Number 1600 The papers of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in March of 1994 by the Guild and opened for research in September of 1996. The papers of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild [Newspaper Guild Local 82] reflect the growth and activities of newspaper unionism. Its earliest records as Seattle-Tacoma Newspaper Guild, Local 82 date from audits beginning in 1937. In 1972, the local changed its name to Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild. The minutes of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild are broken down into three different types: executive board minutes, chapter minutes and membership minutes. The bulk of the collection is the strike negotiations, beginning in 1947 and ending in 1978, the largest being the years from 1971-1974. Negotiations material includes meeting minutes, inter-office memos explaining bargaining maneuvers, strike bulletins, and research that goes into a collective bargaining session such as monetary gains, health insurance, mileage, job classification and discrimination. The collection also contains the 1972 Seattle- Tacoma Newspaper Guild, Local 82 vs. U.S. Bureau of Prisons suit. This suit, with the help of the ACLU, was brought on by prisoner unrest and the demand by journalists to seek interviews with prisoners. Important subjects covered in the collection are: ACLU Suit Collective Bargaining Discrimination Washington Post Strike Among the important correspondents are: Charles A Perlik Jr. Wesley Bubb Shirley Caldwell Charlie Perlich Contents 13 Manuscript boxes 2 Negative Photographs Series I, Financial Records, 1937-1985, Boxes 1-3.
