July 29 Free Flight Ed Hardin (TN) mightily winding his Old- Timer Rubber model. David Mills photo.

Free Flight The expected good weather conditions held for Tuesday, although the heat did spike higher than expected. By midafternoon it got quite hot. The forecasted showers never materialized, but the humidity did. No mishaps were reported, though. Everybody was flying smart and staying hydrated. The winds were out of the east and moderate. The only off-field excursions were the usual ones from duration flights of several minutes. Most of those landed in the corn and beans, and fliers enjoyed those travails As always, many Gas Power events were flown. C Gas drew 10 fliers and Bob Hanford led the way with a score of 900 seconds. Jim Demeritte and Dick Covalt trailed behind with 740 and 737. A NosGas drew a large field of 22 fliers. Roy Smith led by a comfortable margin with 960 seconds, followed by Bob Sowder with 806 and Dave Edmonson with 768. One Design Combo drew its usual large field with 17 fliers. Glenn Schneider led the pack by a large margin with 840 seconds, followed by Jim Bocckinfuso with 657, and Hank Sperzel with 600. The F1C fliers had a good day and put on a clinic for ballistic climbs and angelic glides. Faust Parker took the win with 1,260 seconds, trailed by Gil Morris with 1,223, and Fast Richard Mathis with 900. Mulvihill, the grandfather of the Rudy Kluiber (OH) launching his Gas ROW model that s Rise-Off-Water. It s harder than it looks. Rubber events, produced a real battle with 23 fliers, and conditions made it a real slog. John Shailor reprised his previous victories with a whopping 2,640 seconds, well ahead of his fellow fliers. Joe Williams and Ed Hardin, no strangers to the podium, followed with 1,620 and 1,537 seconds respectively. Every year Mulvihill upholds the old Free Flight adage that at some point it becomes a retrieval contest. The Junior contestants joined in, and Kyle Gerspacher won with 448 seconds, followed by Hailey Mattson with 302, and William Reuter with 194. The other Rubber fliers also had a big day. Old-Timer (OT) Rubber Cabin drew five fliers, and Jim O Reilly topped his buddies with three maxes worth 360 seconds. Both Ed Sneed and William Carson followed by only a hair with 358 seconds, tying for second. The rocket scientists enjoyed the Jetex event, and puffs of sturm und drang abounded. Chris Matsuno won with 241 seconds, followed by John Oliver with 161, and Experten Bill Reuter with 143. The Glider people kept busy with F1H and OT Catapult. The latter drew an impressive 24 fliers! And it was won by a ton by Tim Batiuk with 577 seconds. Dick Peterson trailed with a respectable 332 seconds, likewise Bill Schlarb in third with 309. F1H went into an evening flyoff and will be covered tomorrow. The electric-power events are becoming popular, and Electric B s turnout of 22 fliers proved it. Dale Elder won with an excellent score of 1,299 seconds, followed by Dick Ivers with 1,068, and Ralph Ray with 912. Tuesday was ROW day Rise-Off- Water and it offered three events. Launching off the water is always an unnatural and dramatic thrill. John Diebolt won Rubber ROW with 257 seconds. Rudy Kluiber won Hydrostar ROW with 297 and the exciting ROW Gas with 293 seconds. Well done, Rudy! Bob Stalick and the Oregon fliers hosted a special E-20 event. Jack Murphy won it going away with 224 seconds. Others enjoying the fun were Drake Hooke with 139, Hayden Ashworth with 114, and Chuck Powell with 112. It appears that Jack set a new standard for this fun electric contest. Wednesday will offer a new slate of events and comparable thrills, and Don DeLoach takes over as your NatsNews reporter! The weather might prove interesting as a cold front is coming through and might drop some rain on the field, as well as lowering temperatures. Look for the start of the Flying Aces Club events. E-36 and Catapult Glider will vie for the most popular this year, and Wednesday will decide. There s a good assortment of Gas, Glider, and Rubber Duration events, too. Thanks, everybody, for your help out there on the field. I m going to fly some model airplanes! David Mills Photos by the author.

Doug Marsh (IN) prepping his Gas model. Jack Murphy (UT) is prepping his E-36 for Wednesday.

Guy Scott (IN) takes a well-deserved break. Free Flight is hard work. Charles Caton (AL) readying his Gas model. Absent for many years, he s back with a vengeance. Chuck Marcos (IL) takes a break from his labors. Jerry Murphy (CO, nee TX) is holding forth. I didn t catch his club affiliation. Claiborne Wilson (GA) adds some impetus to his Gollywock. He s leaving next week for Georgia Tech! 4 NatsNews 2015

Mark Freeland of Retro RC is also the new owner of Campbell s Custom Kits. Good luck, Mark! George Bredehofe, the proud owner of Volaré Products, is doing a brisk business. A very composed David Sechrist. Dan Berry (AR) launching his Gas ROW model. Takeoff is always suspenseful. Bob Hanford (OK, nee TX) gives his big Gas model a rest. Jack Marsh (IN) and his big gas-powered Maverick. Jack flies them in all sizes.

Mike McKeever (CA) is the F1A winner and the Tulsa Glue Dobbers Trophy holder. John Shailor (MI) is the proud and exhausted winner of Mulvihill. His final time was 2,640 seconds, no less! Winners of the special E-20 event. Electric B winners. 6 NatsNews 2015
