World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2018 March 5 11, 2018 Sofia, Bulgaria FIRST INFORMATION

WELCOME TO SOFIA BULGARIA is honoured to welcome skaters, officials and guests from ISU Member countries at the occasion of the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2018 to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria from 5 th to 11 th March, 2018. BULGARIA BULGARIA is situated in Southeastern Europe, in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. It covers an area of 110 993.6 square kilometres and its population numbers about 8.5 million. Founded in 681, Bulgaria is one of the oldest European states. The Bulgarian nationality with its standard language, common culture, and state tradition has existed for more than 13 centuries. It developed in the course of time as an amalgamation of Thracian, Slavic and Proto-Bulgarian tribes. Bulgaria's landscape is variegated - low, medium and high mountains, hills and plateaus, low lands and plains, valleys and meadows, gulfs and beaches. Rila and Pirin are alpine mountains. Their height exceeds 2900 m above sea-level. Stara Planina is the longest mountain; it divides the country into two parts: Northern and Southern. Called also the Balkan /range/, it is the "name-giver" of the whole peninsula. For more information, please refer to the below listed web sites: http://bulgariatravel.org/en/ www.travel-bulgaria.com 2

The City of Sofia SOFIA, the capital of Bulgaria, is situated in the centre of the Balkan Peninsula where the main roads from Western Europe to the Middle East and from Northern Europe to the Mediterranean cross. Sofia lies in the southern part of the Sofia valley, which has an area of 1180 km² and an altitude of 350 m above sea level, just at the foot of Vitosha Mountain. The majestic chain of the Balkan Range surrounds it by the north. Sofia has a history that goes back thousands of years. Through the centuries, many people have inhabited it and added to its rich and diverse history. The St. Sofia Church, a three-nave basilica, built in the late 5th century AD Serdica was the name of the central dwelling of the ancient Tracian tribe known as Serdi. It bore that name when it became part of Bulgarian state at the beginning of the ninth century and was soon recognized as one of the most important feudal towns, acquiring the Slavic name Sredets. The modern city of Sofia was named in the 14 th century after the basilica St. Sofia. The decline of Sofia during the ottoman Empire was followed by the rejuvenation after the liberation in 1879, when Sofia was chosen as the capital of Bulgaria at the first National Constituent Assembly. Rapidly the city's image changed from an Oriental, to a European. Today many streets, buildings, parks, and even whole neighborhoods preserve the architectural style from the turn of the century. Being so close to the Vitosha Mountain, Sofia offers a variety of entertainment, sport, rest and excursions. Traveling to Sofia By plane The National Art Gallery Sofia International Airport is located 10 kilometers (six miles) east of the city centre. Recently renovated, it is now bright, modern and smoke-free (except in designated café areas). Sofia International Airport (ITAT Code: SOF) Tel: +359 2 937 22 11/12 E-mail: public@sofia-airport.bg Website: www.sofia-airport.bg 3

Airport facilities include several 24-hour bureaux de change and an ATM, located in the customs building some distance from the main entrance, as well as left-luggage facilities, bars, fast-food outlets and rent a car facility from Avis and Hertz. By Rail The main European railway route pass through Bulgaria. International trains link Sofia with many European capital cities and domestic rail network ensures access to all large settlements. Central Railway Station is Sofia s main station. The website of Bulgarian State Railway is: http://www.bdz.bg/en/ By Road European roads are prefixed by the letter E while internal motorways and main roads are indicated by numbers only. Place names, signposted along main roads, are in both Cyrillic and Latin script on minor roads they may be in Cyrillic only but road signs are international. Petrol stations are found on the main roads in largest towns and every 30-40km along the motorways, while on minor roads these can be few and far between. Speed limits are 140 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on country roads and 50 km/h in urban areas. A Green Card and Motor Insurance are obligatory. UK driving license and EU pink-format license are valid in Bulgaria. All accident should be reported to tell: 112.
