Nathan Graham, University of Michigan Nathan Graham, caddying began simply as a way to earn some extra money. Nathan s friend, Will, suggested that the two apply to caddie at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills. With a friend to help pass the time, Nathan patiently waited hours in his first year in the caddie house to get loops. About a month into caddying, Nathan s patience began to pay off. About a month into the season, we were both identified as candidates for the Rookie of the Year Award, given to the rookie with the most loops, Nathan remembers. From then on, my competitive nature overtook me and I made sure I was working longer than the other candidates. Evans Scholar Nathan Graham caddying for Jason Hanson at Oakland Hills Country Club. Nathan s hard work paid off when he was eventually named the Rookie of the Year following his first summer. Nathan continued to work hard as a caddie at Oakland Hills, and he came to appreciate that he was getting a lot more out of caddying than just some extra spending money. Caddying at OHCC has given me the opportunity to meet some impressive and successful people, Nathan says. The lessons I ve learned from asking golfers their story and why they are successful has been invaluable. Then, in 2009, the recession hit Nathan s family hard. His father was laid off from his job and his mother s employment at Chrysler was up in the air as a result of the recession. Then, in his senior year of high school, Nathan was awarded the Evans Scholarship to attend the University of Michigan. Being awarded the Evans Scholarship meant that I would still be able to pursue my dream of becoming a physician, Nathan says. It meant that I would be able to attend and thrive at the best university in the world, which would prepare me for the rigors of medical school. Nathan Graham and fellow Three years later, Nathan s dream of becoming a physician is going strong. On top of his academics, Nathan has continued his hard work as a leader within the Evans Scholars Program. Nathan is serving in his second year as Executive Vice President of the Michigan Evans Scholarship House. Living in the Evans Scholarship house and serving as an executive officer has provided me with invaluable experiences I otherwise may have not had, Nathan says. The Evans Scholarship relieved the financial burden on Nathan s parents, but he believes that the true value of his experience as an Evans Scholar goes much deeper. The program has been a greater support system than I ever could have imagined, Nathan says. I look forward to paying it forward and being a resource for the Scholars in the graduating classes following me. University of Michigan Evans Scholars give back at annual Blood Drive.
Chick s Dream What began as a dream for Charles Chick Evans in 1929 to send deserving caddies, like Nathan, to college, has grown into the nation s largest college scholarship program for golf caddies. Currently, 935 students are enrolled at 20 universities across the nation, including 145where the Foundation operates a Scholarship House. In recent years, successful fundraising efforts have allowed leaders to grow the Program, with a goal of sending 1,000 caddies to college annually by the year 2020. Each Scholar goes through a comprehensive selection process and is evaluated on four main criteria academics, financial need, caddie record, and character and leadership. Evans Scholars are campus leaders in academics and extracurricular activities. The program boasts a cumulative GPA of 3.2 with a graduation rate over 95%. The Alumni, 10,000 strong, pay it forward each year in annual contributions. Last year alone over $10 million was donated back to the program. The Scholarship Houses at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan continue the excellent traditions of the program while preparing the young men and women for what lies ahead. So, we invite you to help keep Chick s dream alive by participating in Michigan s premier golf event The Evans Scholars Golf Classic. We return to on Monday, July 10 for our 28th year.
