CELEBRATING 26 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Philadelphia Chapter - American Singles Golf Association January 2018 From the President How many days until Spring? I hope you are all packing for winter vacations, staying warm or practicing your putting indoors. We ve decided to exhibit at the golf show this year, February 9-11, in Oaks. You will be seeing an email request for volunteers to staff the booth. If you can help out, great! The Denver chapter has had great success growing its membership using the show so we are going to give it a try. In addition to the golf show email, you will be seeing a survey about our chapter, with questions covering golf, social, membership and other topics. Please take a few minutes to give us your opinions on these topics so that we appeal to current members and new ones too. If you think something needs to change, tell us through the open comments on the survey. Also, you can always email any of the board with your thoughts on all things ASGA. We ve lined up several social events to stay connected outside of golf. They are spread out geographically so be sure to read the details. The old complaint that everything is too far from me has been heard. So now the challenge is on. If you see something of interest not far from you, reach out to Maria to offer your help. There are many things you can do, as little as being the point person who shows up early to save a few seats at the bar. Happy New Year, everyone. Looking forward to great golf and fun times off the course with your ASGA friends. ~Karen Eckert, specialk312@msn.com Social Chair The weather is cold and golf isn't on the agenda unless you're heading to Florida, Myrtle Beach or other warm climes this month. So, for those with a little spare weekend time, let's get together this month. Watch the ASGA website and email updates for details to attend dinner and the Comedy Club in Valley Forge on January 12, dancing in Media or Bensalem on January 19, and bowling on January 21. If enough members are interested, there's a NYC bus trip we can join on January 27. We might try using our Meetup Group for one of these events to test that as a communications method too. This year, we're looking to run two Super Bowl parties to reduce drive times, one near King of Prussia and one in the Eastern burbs. It can be at a restaurant, somebody's house or a clubhouse too. If you'd like to run the west/kop event, please contact me. I'll be running the East event either at my house or a restaurant/bar near the turnpike. Who wants to plan for the West event? February will be packed with socials each weekend starting with the Super Bowl parties. Group dinners the weekend of the 10th, Dueling Pianos February 17, and Conklin's Comedy Buffet February 24. You'll need to sign-up for the February Upcoming Multi-Chapter Events (see SinglesGolf.com/events) 7-Night Western Caribbean Cruise - March 24-31, 2018. Take the Celebrity Equinox out of Miami, Florida, stops in Key West, Puerto Costa Mayo and Cozumel, Mexico, George Town, Grand Cayman and back to Miami. We're planning for three rounds of golf, which are optional. Full details at www.singlesgolf.com/cruise ASGA National-Sponsored Spring Fling Early, 2018. Date and location to be determined. This won t be held in Florida, however, we re seeking a location in the mid-atlantic region, somewhere midway up the East Coast. Open for ideas! ASGA in Ireland / Northern Ireland July, 2018 - Just a thought at this point but we haven t been to Ireland since 2014. We ve experienced Scotland twice and Spain once. We ll do a national survey soon about your desire to travel to the land with no snakes. Tom Alsop will be doing site visits in December, selecting hotels, courses and restaurants. Some general information posted at www.singlesgolf.com/ Ireland - - however, please do not make any plans, reservations, etc. until event is confirmed. Regular Meeting Date Second Tuesday of each month Next Meeting TBD Meeting Location Chesterbrook Embassy Suites Our Chapter Website www.philadelphia.singlesgolf.com (See next page for list of officers and board members.) When tickets are needed, ASGA can't hold a seat unless you buy your tickets online. Don't be surprised if you see Friday happy hours pop-up each week but in different spots of each county. We need your help and input on our survey especially on how to get the word out besides our monthly newsletter as we can't list all the details here. See you all soon at one of our socials and remember that we always need volunteers to host or setup some of these events. ~Maria Zuliani, Maria_zuliani@hotmail.com Golf Chair Update Happy New Year!! I know it doesn t look like golf weather, but we re already planning for a wonderful 2018 golf season. Soon a survey will be sent out, requesting your comments and suggestions on ways to improve your golfing experiences, including new course locations. We are very interested in expanding our coverage for golf course locations, especially in the Bucks/Montgomery County areas, and need suggestions from those members who live up there and can make inquiries of courses in those locations. Another idea is that it may be more convenient to have co-chairs for our weekly outings. That way, the responsibilities are split up and, if one chair has a conflict, the outing can still happen. We are very appreciative of the coordinators who have planned some fun and interesting outings in the past, but we are also in need of new faces to help with the outings this year. We would also like to plan at least two weekend-long golf trips this year. Suggestions as to locations/dates/coordinators are welcome for these trips. Finally, for those of you who may be thinking about going on the National trip to Ireland the deadline is January 15, 2018, for your $150 deposit to qualify for a $250 credit towards the trip. ~Joanne Kendall, jkendall@comcast.net Membership Update Well, today (January 4) sure lets us know we are in the midst of winter, no golf for a while with snow, 50 MPH wind gusts creating white outs. That and sub-zero with the wind chills? NO THANKS! Generally, membership questions/new applications pretty much stop during the winter so things are pretty quiet right now except for ongoing renewals. On that note, the board has decided to participate in this year s Philly Golf Show Feb. 9-11! A separate correspondence will be coming shortly about just this event with an explanation and request for volunteers. More to follow. ~Sally Thompson-Bell sally.thompson-bell@gmail.com Treasurer s Report Hello everyone, As of December 20, 2017, we have $6,067.96 cash on hand. We wrote two checks. Check #1042 for $23.00 to the Philadelphia Golf Association for a handicap fee collected earlier in the year and check #1043 for $100.00 to Paul Corby for reimbursement for the DJ s tip. Should you have any questions feel free to ask. Thank you! ~Troy Newell, Treasurer, tnewell371@verizon.net November 21 December 20 Beginning Balance $5,260.37 Income Christmas Party Fees $2,575.00 October Dues $20.00 Expenses Double Tree Balance remaining for the $1,664.41 Christmas Party Checks Written (2) $123.00 Ending Balance $6,067.96

Communications Update I thought it could be fun to publish photos in this newsletter of ASGA Philly members playing golf in their winter getaways. Send me photos of you and your pals at a golf course in the next three months. Get it to me in the last week of the month to make it into the next edition. Tell us who is in the photo, where you are playing and any other fun facts about your winter escapes. We ll print as many as we can collect. Hope the Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, Florida golfers will share their fun with us. ~Chris Brady, c.b96@comcast.net Here s one to start out: Gerry Chalphin and me with our caddy Rudy at the Sandals/Upton Golf Course in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
