Jonathan Smith rushed for a career high 160 yards and Chris Bruhn added 118 yards on the ground as WSU made head coach Bill Doba s coaching debut a successful one with a 25-0 shutout of the Idaho Vandals. The game was played before 50,113 partisan WSU fans in the Seahawk Stadium. Smith and kicker Drew Dunning provided all of the WSU scoring, with Smith scoring on runs of six and two yards. Dunning connected on field goals from 46, 42, 29 and 35 yards. Meanwhile, WSU s defense recorded its first shutout since the 1999 season. WSU relied on the running of Smith and Jermaine Greene (48 net yards) for three quarters, then turned the duties over to Bruin, a junior college transfer. In all, WSU rushed for 339 yards, the most since gaining 373 yards at Illinois in 1988. It was also the first time WSU had two running backs over 100 yards since 1993. WSU s shutout was the first in a season opener since 1965. Matt Kegel, making his first start since the 2001 season, was just what the WSU coaches expected. He hit 12 of his 21 passes with just one interception. Troy Bienemann and Trandon Harvey each caught three passes. With Dunning leading the way, WSU s special teams play was solid, with Smith returning one kickoff 38 yards and Sammy Moore bringing back two punts 45 yards. Kyle Basler averaged 34.7 yards with his three punts, but only allowed eight return yards. Defensively Erik Coleman and Will Derting each had five tackles. Virgil Williams picked off two Idaho passes and Don Turner had one interception. Aaron Wagner and Mkristo Bruce each had sacks, while Don Jackson and Will Derting combined on a third sack. Cody Boyd blocked two Vandal field goal attempts. WSU 26 (OT) September 6, 2003, Notre Dame, Ind. Washington State builit a 19-point first half lead, but was unable to hold on as Notre Dame kicker Nicholas Setta booted a 40-yard field goal in OT to give the Fighting Irish a 29-26 victory over the Cougars. WSU gained the early advantage with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Matt Kegel to Sammy Moore, and a pair of Drew Dunning field goals in the first quarter. Defensive end Isaac Brown extended the lead to 19 with a 16-yard scoop and score fumble recovery. The Cougars sacked Irish quarterback Carlyle Holiday five times in the opening stanza. Entering the final quarter, Notre Dame still trailed 19-6, but used the running back combination of Julius Jones and Ryan Grant, who combined for 175 rushing yards, to climb back into the game. The Irish made the score 23-19 on a 19-yard run by Jones. They added to that lead two minutes with a 47-yard field goal by Setta. With 3:03 remaining on the clock, Kegel began a nine-play, 80 yard touchdown drive that ended with a acrobatic 34-yard scoring strike to Moore for his second touchdown reception of the afternoon. Kegel finished the day with a career-best 274 passing yards The score sent the two teams into overtime, where Setta gave Notre Dame the victory on the team s first possession of the extra period. 2003 GAME SUMMARIES WSU 47 AT #17 COLORADO 26 September 13, 2003, Boulder, Colo. The Cougars never trailed at Colorado, but it was a 24-point explosion in the third quarter that put WSU in command. Matt Kegel threw for a career high 310 yards and tossed touchdown passes to Devard Darling, Sammy Moore and Scott Lunde. WSU used the big play to gain the win. In the first quarter Kegel and Moore hooked up on a 74-yard pass and score play, then Lunde got in the act with a 77-yard pass from Kegel. WSU led 23-13 at halftime, then put the hammer down in the third quarter. First Moore bobbled the kickoff to start the second half, picked it up and went 97 yards for the score. WSU then drove 63 yards for another touchdown, scored on a short 12-yard drive after recovering a Colorado fumble and then tacked on a Drew Dunning field goal after an interception. In less than seven minutes WSU jumped to a 47-13 lead, then turned the game over to the subs. Erik Coleman led WSU s defense with an interception and eight tackles, while Jason David scored on his 11th career interception. NEW MEXICO 13 September 20, 2003, Pullman, Wash. WSU amassed 433 yards between the 20 yard lines, but did little inside the 20, so Drew Dunning stepped up and kicked a school record five field goals as WSU defeated New Mexico 23-13 before 32,344 fans. After Dunning had staked WSU to a 9-0 second quarter lead, the Lobos came back with two quick scores, one a throwback to the quarterback and the second on a diving 50-yard pass play, giving the visitors a 13-9 lead and silencing the stunned WSU crowd. A fourth Dunning field goal pulled WSU to within one point, 13-12, at halftime. In the second half WSU s defense never let UNM get untracked, holding them to 78 total yards over the final two quarters. Meanwhile WSU dented the Lobo endzone with a QB sneak by Matt Kegel and a fifth Dunning field goal, this one a 49-yarder. Kegel had career highs with 42 attempts, 29 completions and 346 yards. He had no interceptions nor TD passes. Devard Darling was his favorite target, hauling in nine passes for 113 yards. WSU notched four sacks and seven TFLs while limiting the Lobos to 22 yards rushing. UNM s longest run was nine yards. Scott Davis recovered the only turnover of the day and also led WSU tacklers with six stops. 2003 GAME SUMMARIES COUGAR HISTORY 2003 IN REVIEW WSU OPPONENTS PLAYER PROFILES WSU COACHES 2004 OUTLOOK #21 WSU 55 AT #10 OREGON 16 September 27, 2003, Eugene, Ore. Washington State put away its conference opener early, using seven first half turnovers by Oregon to jump to a 38-2 halftime advantage and holding on to win 55-16 at a sold out Autzen Stadium. Sammy Moore gave the Cougars an early lead, getting behind a pair of UO defenders and hauling in a 41-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Kegel. WSU deepened Oregon s hole just over three minutes later by scoring 10 points in a span of 26 seconds. Drew Dunning connected on a 41-yard field goal, which was followed up by a Jeremy Bohannon interception on the Ducks next possession. Kegel helped the Cougs convert immediately, using a flea flicker to find receiver Devard Darling alone in the endzone for a 38-yard touchdown. WSU added a touchdown on a blocked punt just 21 seconds before the half to extend its lead to 36 points. The win was WSU s second in as many years over Oregon and the widest margin of victory for the Cougars in 80 games against the Ducks. ARIZONA 7 October 4, 2003, Pullman, Wash. Washington State s defense limited Arizona to just 198 yards of offense while quarterback Matt Kegel threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns as the Cougars cruised to 2-0 in the Pac- 10 with a 30-7 victory. The Cougar defense held UA without a third-down conversion on 13 attempts and allowed the Wildcats to cross the 50 just once. Kegel and backup Josh Swogger distributed the ball to nine different receivers, including Devard Darling, who hauled in an 84-yard scoring strike in the first quarter. Cornerback Jason David sealed the victory with 9:02 remaining in the fourth quarter by intercepting a pass from Wildcat freshman quarterback Kris Heavner and racing 34 yards for a touchdown. Running back Jonathan Smith made it 30-7 with 7:38 to play with an 11- yard touchdown pass from Kegel. Senior middle linebacker Don Jackson recorded a team-high eight tackles.
