President s Report Firstly, a big congratulations to all the participants in our 30th Anniversary Annual Large Koi Show. It can truly be said to have been our best and most successful koi show to date, at a really great new venue. This year the quality of the koi was again exceptional and with over three hundred koi on display, it was a wonderful exhibit. Without the strong support of Members entering their koi into our shows we would very quickly diminish as a club and I urge those that missed out this year to make every effort next and participate in this great event. I also wish to offer my formal thanks to Harry Beckx and Pang Hon Seung for travelling such a long way to act as our judges. Also a special thank you to Gerard McDonald and Allan Bennett who once again supported us with their judging skills. The AKA is very fortunate indeed to be able to call upon such koi friends with such high judging experience to officiate with the difficult task of selecting koi that meet the necessary koi conformation criteria. Thank you, judges! Special congratulations go to Heinz Zimmermann for taking out the coveted Grand Champion with a beautiful Sanke, to Terry McNeil and Lex for Reserve with a very high quality Matsukawabake. Also I would like to formally thank Dianna Banning for the co-ordination of the Show and to all who helped make our 30th Anniversary so special. The weather is now starting to quickly cool, so it is time to watch your pond s water temperature, reduce your koi feeding and when the water reaches 10-12 degrees C, cease feeding completely. Your fish will not have the need for food in this temperature range and it is believed it also assists with the building of a stronger bone development. Also some believe it helps reduce the risk of tumours, as a koi s ability to digest food when low water temperatures are experienced is severely reduced. Therefore it is strongly recommended to stop completely and wait till water starts to warm in the spring. At our May meeting we held our Annual Dave Pogson Breeders Trophy and a special congratulations to Graham and Lee Fameli for breeding the magnificent Kinginrin Showas and taking out the event. No doubt some of these beautiful koi will make their way into our future koi shows. Finally, a big congratulations to Kate McGill and Ian Andrews (below) for recently taking out the coveted Grand Champion award at the KSA s 34th Annual Show with their Koromo Sanke. Well done. Yours in koi, Paul Miglionico President April 2011 May 2011 3

2011 Dave Pogson Memorial Breeders Trophy At our May general meeting we held our Annual Dave Pogson Breeders Trophy, with a high number of entrants exhibiting ten koi from their last breeding season. What was particularly evident was the number of very high quality koi on show. Most tanks had at least one show quality koi and many exhibitors had more than one. The Award was set up to remember one of our hardest working, most knowledgeable and original founders of our club, Dave Pogson. He would have been very pleased with the koi on display and by the interest in the large number of attendees the night attracted. This year again with the overall high quality, the decision was difficult for our judges. However Ron and Max Farrugia, after much deliberation, presented the Award to Lee and Graham Fameli for their fabulous bowl of Kin Gin Rin Showas. The runner up award went to Terry McNeil and Lex for their bowl of stunning Parachinas (Platinum Ogons), which exhibited excellent shine so important in young ogons. Congratulations to all our breeders your efforts in striving to improve the quality of your koi will contribute to the long term betterment of koi in Australia. Thirty years young The AKA Annual Large Koi Show 2011 Sunday 3 rd April 2011 heralded the 30 th anniversary of the Australian Koi Association s annual large koi show, a memorable occasion. For this very special show, months of research resulted in the discovery of a new and very attractive venue, the Cumberland State Forest Nursery at Castle Hill. It is difficult to describe why this venue is so special, but with the lovely mature trees, forest walks and very attractive architecture of the nursery and forestry demonstration buildings, it has an ambience all its own. A large grassy area and an adjacent space set to bark around a magnificent blackbutt tree, (the largest in the district), provided ample space for all the show vats. Everything was available for an excellent show setting, even flag poles and fencing to hang the international flags and koi posters on the day. The site had a café and a well-stocked nursery, full of interesting native and hybrid Australian plants. Both offered additional entertainment for visitors who wanted a rest from looking at the koi. There was even a barbecue and picnic area, so for the first time, all the hungry show set up staff were able to have a good cooked breakfast. Gordon Kilborn, Ken Newton and Ros Lindberg did sterling service as chefs. We were very lucky to find and secure this site for the show although the nursery benefited also, because of all the extra visitors the show attracted to the site. Extensive advertising before the show and even an illuminated sign on the main road maximised publicity for this very special show, which attracted over 300 koi entries and a large crowd on the day. Leading up to the weekend, the weather was poor with a lot of overcast and rain the previous fortnight. Everyone looked at this positively, rainy periods in New South Wales do not generally last longer than a few days. It couldn t possibly rain on show day after such a wet fortnight! Sure enough, even though the Saturday set up day was overcast and windy, show Sunday dawned clear, still and bright with the promise of 27 C. We could not have hoped for better, a perfect Australian autumn day! To judge the show for us this year, two, overseas Assistant Certified ZNA judges were 8 The judging team: left to right, Harry Beckx, Gerard McDonald, Allan Bennett and Pang Hon Seong. invited and accepted. Mr Pang Hon Seong from Singapore and Mr Harry Beckx from South Africa. To assist them were Australian Assistant Certified judge Mr Gerard McDonald (Sydney) and ZNA trainee judge Mr Allan Bennett (Western Australia). The AKA take their hospitality duties very seriously with respect to looking after visitors and this year was no exception. Ming Van very kindly took first time Australian visitors Mr and Mrs Pang on a tour of Darling Harbour and the Rocks area of Sydney on the Saturday, while local Gerard McDonald entertained old friends Allan Bennett plus Harry and Yvonne Beckx on a pond tour. After the show on Monday, Mr and Mrs Pang were shown more of Sydney s sights by John Ling, including a visit to the zoo, in a magnificent setting with views over Sydney Harbour. Harry and Yvonne Beckx have visited Sydney several times, so an alternative tour was arranged for them on Monday by to visit some of the beautiful south coast and Southern Highland scenery. I accompanied them, because even after four and half years in New South Wales, this State is so huge, I have as yet seen little of it and welcomed this opportunity. Mr and Mrs Pang returned home on Tuesday, while Ian Andrews and I took Harry and Yvonne to see the famous Jenolan Caves in the Blue Mountains. Before they left Sydney on Thursday Harry and Yvonne were also taken on a tour of Canberra by Terry AKA REPORTER

The crowd starts to gather and Wally McNeil. Show aside, with additional evening events scheduled every day, the week was one long party! Show day was hectic for everyone involved. Being a one-day event, the koi have to be benched very early in the morning to allow judging to commence at 8.30 am. Ian and I began our day at 5 am and Ian was on his way to the show-ground with our entries before 7 am where I joined him a little later, transporting spare chairs and other forgotten items for the show. My role for the day was assistant, with Betty Ludbrook, to show coordinator Dianna Banning, in looking after all the judging and results paperwork, a bit different from actually judging koi, but very interesting, none the less. I don t think anyone that has not actually volunteered as crew for a show can have any idea just how much work is involved. However, it s a lot of fun too and an excellent learning experience for any koi hobbyist. The show ground was a brave sight when everything was ready, flags flying, bright posters everywhere and of course, the koi! We really hoped for a superb turnout of entries this year for the 30 th anniversary show, and no one was disappointed. Just over 300 koi were shown, a large proportion being size 4 and above. Every year an improvement in quality of koi has been obvious, but this year the difference was incredible. Particularly memorable was a young size 4 Sanke owned by Ming Van, winner of best in variety. The outstanding quality and definition of colour on this koi was worthy of a Sanke in Japan and this variety is well-known for being one of the most difficult of all to produce to an excellent standard. A Sanke also took Grand Champion this year, owned by Heinz Zimmermann. This too is a lovely Sanke, with a superb mature size 6 figure. Heinz certainly knows how to produce large well-shaped koi, also winning the non-go Sanke Grand Champion B with his huge Gin Matsuba! First time exhibitor at the AKA show, Steve Levi, took out a hat trick of awards for Go-Sanke size 5 with some magnificent adult koi. It would be impossible to talk about every wonderful koi at the show but they were a real treat to enjoy. All the size categories had some very special koi on offer and I heard many of the visitors exclaiming over the entries with delight and our judges were openly impressed. All in all, perfect weather, a lovely site, beautiful koi, very definitely, a day to remember. Kate McGill April 2011 May 2011 9
