Hope that everything has been well and do visit the club now that the school holidays are near. I hope by the time you read this, the haze has cleared. We had to cancel some events like the Mid Autumn festival lantern walk for the children due to the haze but was lucky that many events could continue with venue rearrangements. In this issue, we report on our recent Townhall meeting, where members were happily informed that the Changi golf course construction will be completed on schedule and will open for members play on 1 Dec 2015. A new smartphone app was also launched with many features. You can now perform many functions such as online bookings, checking Cat 1 status and calling the club outlets by tapping the phone number displayed on the app. Do try it out. Kranji hosted our Captain s Cup competition this year and participants had a great day of golf, dinner and a fruits buffet. This is the first time we had a fruits buffet and it certainly added flavour for the golfers! Another first is that we had hired full time service staff at Kranji golf terrace to improve service for our members. Do visit Kranji to golf and patronize the golf terrace. After nine months of hard work, the new 9-Hole will be completed and will be ready for play; we take a look back at how far we ve come since the Army Course was closed. We also caught up over coffee with Quincy Quek, one of our ex-junior golfers who is now a prominent professional golfer and he spills some beans on his life after joining the professional ranks. Facilities-wise, new billiards tables are now available at the social wing and the driving range operating hours will be extended for golfers. The club will be organising an Open House with attractive membership promotions will be available. Do inform your friends about it and encourage them to sign up if they are interested. Happy holidays, Sze Wah resort view 3 theeditorspeaks Notice of Omission: Mr Lim Tian Leong was omitted from RV Sept-Oct s Hole-in-One listing. We sincerely apologise for the error. His Hole-in-One was scored on June 3, 2015 at KSGC.

seen&heard seen&heard resort resort view 4 resort view 5 An Intimate Affair last-minute relocation to the Leaders A room due to the haze added a touch of cosiness to NSRCC s Oktoberfest celebration that was organised for the second year running. Despite the change, spirits of the merrymakers were not dampened, and they partied the night away. Erdinger beers in hands and food in bellies, the night started with a nail-biting bingo game, where cash prizes stood to be won. Many close calls were had, as potential winners crowded around the stage, all ready to claim their prize if their winning numbers were called. Partygoers were entertained with a hilarious performance by a very special guest that got them roaring with laughter and scrambling for their cameras, as some of our attendees very gamely demonstrated their booty shaking chops. Several sporting gentlemen also participated in some drinking and strength games as well. Those who were content to watch at their seats had their share of thrills during the lucky draw segments, which saw Ms Florence Khemlani, Convener (Family Recreation), Resorts & Facilities Committee, and Mr Patrick Too, Vice Chairman, Resorts & Facilities Committee, giving away prizes. A big thank you to all attendees for having fun with us!

seen&heard seen&heard resort view 12 resort view 13 Quincy Quek: From Junior Golfer to Pro T The 28 year-old was introduced to the game by his father, who brought him to a driving range. He recalls the experience as one of his fondest golfing memories, The first time I actually hit the ball, I still remember. My dad had actually gone out with his friends; they went to the driving range. He came back home, and brought me off to the driving range. He was just telling me that he tried hitting some balls, it s quite fun, so he wanted me to try it out, with a junior set for me. It was about that time I was watching a fair bit of golf, I was watching Greg Norman, Nick Faldo Later on, when Tiger came on in 97, that s when I pretty much followed him all the way. Since then, Quincy has continuously worked on improving his game. It was not easy playing as a junior; equipment for juniors was not common, and to keep costs low, the family would head to Malaysia during weekends. The rarity of juniors and dominance of adult players also created conflict, We got a lot of stares like, What s this young kid doing here, does he really know how to play, can someone call a marshal and check his handicap, stuff like that. People didn t really like the idea of juniors coming out on the golf course, and there was no junior programme of sorts. Things changed when Quincy s father became a NSRCC member, and Quincy was able to work on and improve his game; he participated in the few junior Quincy Quek has come a long way since he first tried hitting golf balls at 10 years old. The professional golfer currently splits his time playing on the Asian Tour, Asian Development Tour, and PGA Tour China. tournaments that were available and monthly medals hosted by the Club. As he went on to join the national team, the Club was able to support him by offering him opportunities to practise; this has continued till today. Whatever the club has extended to me, it s much appreciated. Even now, since I turned pro, they ve continued to support me, which is one of the things I was sort of a bit worried about. Going out after everybody s gone, maybe stay on one hole or stay on two holes, I think that s a lot more beneficial than spending five hours playing 18 holes. It s been great that I have this option. said Quincy. Indeed the transition from being an amateur to pro golfer was a challenging one, especially with the financial considerations involved. Doubt sets in sometimes: There s been quite a few times I ve been thinking, Is this the right decision? Maybe I should go back to school, finish up my degree, get a normal job. Thankfully, his family s unwavering belief and support keep him focussed on his goal of playing against the top players in the world. Quincy is hopeful that it is an achievable goal, I think with golf, it s, in a way, quite fair. You don t have to be a certain build to be able to succeed. Golfers they come in all shapes and sizes, and I felt that I had a good enough amateur career, I thought I ll give it a shot. His first professional win was at the Asian Development Tour s Orchard Golf Championship in the Philippines in 2012. Quincy is currently working towards breaking into the American golf scene, and if the two Hole-in-Ones he achieved within two weeks (see page 11!) are any indicator, he has very good reasons to be hopeful. Photo courtesy of Quincy Quek. H eld at KSGC on September 5, our Club Captain, Mr Tan Kah Han, hosted Captain s Cup 2015 and a very special guest: MG Perry Lim, our new Club President/Chief of Defence Force. Golfers were greeted with a special fruits buffet with a feast of fruits to replenish their energies for the day of great golfing to come. And off they went! The weather cooperated and all golfers enjoyed an uninterrupted game. Someone in particular had a better day than others: our very own GM, Mr Ng Heng Chew scored a Hole-in-One on Armed Forces Course Hole # 5! He received his certificate and trophy from Captain during the prize giving presentation at dinner, where participants tucked into a sumptuous meal to end the day on a truly satisfying note. He further mentioned that since March 2015, when the extensive reconfiguration of the Army course began, hard work was put in day and night by the Management and Redevelopment Committee to ensure that plans were on track, leading up to the new 9-hole course being able to open for play from 1st December 2015. Mr Teo also expressed his appreciation to all our members for their unwavering support and patience during the redevelopment phase of the new 9-hole course. He mentioned that MINDEF has worked closely with the Club during this period to ensure that the upgrading works were carried out smoothly, so that inconveniences to our members were kept at a minimum. A large part of the development costs have also been primarily funded by MINDEF, while he also mentioned that the balance would be taken from the Club s Reserves. During the session, Mr James Sua also provided members with a hole-by-hole visual walk-through of the new 9 holes. Key highlights included: The new 9-hole course at NSRCC Changi is a Par 36, measuring 3,081 meters from the back tees. The new course has 4 ponds that are able to store a total of 60,213 m3 of irrigation water that could last up to 17 days during drought. Signature hole 3 incorporating a 4 metre high water fall feature as part of the landscape Signature hole 8 close proximity to sea front with scenic view. There are five bridges on the new 9-hole course reminiscent of the Victorian era. The current green fee rebate and free membership extension that the Club offered as mitigation for the inconvenience to members, will continue till June 2017. By then, prices will be reverted to the rates before the rebate. It was also shared during the session on the upcoming expansion of Social & Recreational facilities that will be oriented towards NSmen and their families. Mr Stanley Ho mentioned that the Club is at present in negotiation over the proposed piece of land that it will be built on. Some potential challenges on height limit due to aviation safety and shore erosion were also shared during the session. To provide easier access for our members to the NSmen Hub, the Club is potentially looking at a sheltered walkway that will provide a link between NSRCC and the new hub. Another exciting announcement during the Town Hall session was that the Club launched its long-awaited mobile application. The app will enable users to make golf and bungalow bookings, as well as allow them to access information on-the-go on operating hours of our facilities and contact information. Our golfers would also be to have instant CAT-1 notifications sent to them. It was also mentioned that these apps are exclusively available for download on Apple itunes Store and Google Play store.

seen&heard seen&heard resort view 16 resort view 17 7 Hole-by-Hole Description of our new 9-hole course 1 2 4 3 The New 9-Hole: Then and Now Seems like nine months have passed in the blink of an eye since the closure of the old Army Course, but it has taken a great deal of effort and coordination by various parties for the new 9-Hole to be built and ready for play in the span of that time. Here s a look back at how far we have come! 8 9 10 11 Hole 2 The rear tee is located near to the current hole A6 island tee. The fairway cuts through the nature area between existing A8 green and A9 trees. The new fairway will rise from current A9 tee area to the turning point (driving target area). The fairway crosses existing hole A2 and A1 fairways to a greensite near the middle of the current driving range. Large bunkers will guard the right approach to the green. Hole 1 Tees for the starting hole are located on the right of the existing driving range area, and slightly elevated. Existing trees currently dividing existing hole A1 from existing hole A3 will be retained. This will be a particularly challenging hole considering its length and the encroachment of lake across the playline between the drive target zone and green. Two wide areas of fairway permit shorter hitters to follow with a full or shorter pitch to the large green. 1 Hard to imagine that nine months is all it took to dig up a golf course to this state, and build another one! 2 Earth work and contour to shape the course. 3 Existing foliage had to be cleared for the works. 4 Water features had to be drained as well. 5 After the bunkers are shaped, waterproofing sheets are laid down to prevent them from getting waterlogged. 5 6 6 Beneath the golf course, there is a complex network of drainage pipes to channel and collect water. 7 As a large part of the course is made of sand, a hard casing around the tee box keeps it in shape. 8 A lot of work goes into the building of retaining walls, which are essential for the structure of the island greens. 9 Curbs of the buggy paths in the new 9-Hole are made using a special machine instead of the usual pre-cast pieces, for smoother curves around corners. 10 One of the main features of the new 9-Hole is this waterfall. The lake which it flows into is flanked by holes 3, 4, and 5, and have the capacity to provide up to 17 days of water for the course. 11 Another new feature in the 9-Hole: pedestrian bridges. 12 Bales of grass imported from Thailand are applied in patches to bare ground, and then given time to grow. When the course is opened for play, they will be dense and beautiful. 12 Hole 3 The classic risk and reward short Par 5 hole witll be the Signature Hole. Tees will be located at current driving range and current levels along the play line will generally be retained. The arm of the lake cuts across the hole at 270m from the back tee and a wide landing area is available around the 240m mark. There is an option for long hitters to try and reach the green in two shots but bunkers will be on the line of play and close proximity to the lake on this line, make the choice high risk.

resort view 18 resort view 19 seen&heard seen&heard Hole 4 This is the existing A6 hole slightly shortened by discontinuing the use of the island tee and with the tees located left of existing group in order to allow for future relocation of Navy 8 Tees. Bunkers will be reshaped and the fairway at the 200 meters range from the back tee raised to provide an enhanced view of the green from that location. The green will be reconstructed identical to the existing. Hole 7 All boundary trees and tree groups along the entry road and entering into the course area will be retained. The fairway will be undulating with the green elevated slightly above the fairway at the turning point location. Fairway bunkers will be added each side of the drive target area to make demands on accurate placement. Steep slopes down to the rear left of the angled green will impact the slightly drawn approach shot. Hole 5 This hole is played from the existing A7 tees and the pond just beyond, to a greensite currently occupied by A3 green. The pond right of the existing A8 tees is in-filled but the narrow stretch of water just short of the greensite retained as a strategic feature of the hole. Water encroaching close to both sides of the fairway near the drive target area will encourage precise driving or preferably the use of a three wood or utility club from the tee. Hole 8 Much of the fairway proposed for this hole is occupied by the tree and bush covered ridge separating the short course from the Air Force Course. Clearing and earthworks will result in a receptive fairway. Several rows of trees will be retained to separate this hole from the par 3 sixth hole. Over-conservative approaches to rear pin position may end in the large shallow bunker. Hole 6 Hole A6 is played from the existing A/F 1 tees to a green located near the existing fairway bunkers location. A long par 3 with a long green angled to the playline and guarded by large bunkers to the left front and right rear. There are difficult pin positions at the left rear of the putting surface whereas the front right half of the green is particularly accessible. The narrow entry from tees to fairway will be retained. Hole 9 This hole follows the routing of existing hole Air Force 9 from roughly the drive target area to the greensite. Advice is that the channel to the right may be widened up to 10m in the future. This can be achieved at the time by incorporation of a retaining wall beside the access track possibly without removal of existing screening trees. A green identical to the existing green with a relatively wide front and narrow rear pin positions is ideal for the new par 3 hole situation.

The brand also supplied tables for this year s SEA Games. will now be able to enjoy a smoother, more even playing surface. This follows the renovations done earlier this year, from 4 to 13 May, where the flooring and counters of the room were replaced. With the upgrades, the Billiard Room has truly gained a new lease of life! Putting the tables together. The revamped counter and new carpets. Running is one of the most accessible fitness activities; just get a good pair of shoes and you are good to good! Whether your goal is better cardio fitness, improved heart health, or weight loss, regular running is a great way to counter the damage done by our sedentary lifestyles. Here are some tips to train for a marathon (42.195k) that are also applicable for a variety of distances: 5k, 10k, a half marathon (21k). Tip 1: Set a Goal Training for a marathon requires a great deal of discipline to sustain through all trainings. Having a goal gives you a focus and meaning to your training! Tip 2: Build a Solid Base As a seasoned runner or a newbie, the key aspect in training for a marathon is building a solid mileage base. Do that by clocking more kilometres on your runs! The three types of Foot Arch It is easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer quantity and variety of running shoes out there, so let s cut through some of the clutter! You should always start with identifying your foot type in order to select the right shoe. Broadly speaking, there are three types of feet Flat, Neutral and High Arched. For more serious runner, you might want to do a running gait test to determine the best fit for you! Before After Tip 3: Progression Do not increase more than 10% of mileage on a weekly basis, allow at least one rest day in between trainings for recovery. Remember: Less haste, more speed! Tip 4: Running Psychology Mental barriers are often tougher than the physical ones. When the going gets tough, remember your goals and visualise yourself as the athlete that you want to be. Tip 5: Cross Training Spice up your training! Running at different speeds, terrain and surfaces during the week will allow your body to adapt and strengthen. You can try cross-training, e.g.: cycling, swimming and weight training etc. Tip 6: Hydration Condition your body and prevent dehydration by taking fluids after the first 20minutes of your long run, then keep drinking small amounts (<150ml) at regular intervals of 10minutes. Tip 7: Rest & Recovery You need to realise that your body needs rest and recovery. Experiment with different rest intervals to find out what works for you. Using sports tapes, such as Acti-tape or sports massage is a great way of preventing injuries or aiding recovery. Medium Arch (Neutral) Most common foot type that lends itself to a wide variety of shoes. Flat Arch (Overpronation) Look for a shoe with stability features to prevent pronation (rolling of the feet inwards). High Arch (Supination) Tendency to supinate (rolling of the feet outwards). Look for shoes with a flexible, cushioned sole. How to Choose the Right Shoes The three most common categorisations for shoes are daily trainers, lightweight trainers and racers. As a guide, the thicker the outsole of the shoe, the more cushioning it has. Racer Minimal cushioning. Ideal as a race day shoe and best suited to runners with an efficient running style. Lightweight Trainer Substantially less cushioning. Ideal for an injection of speed and tempo runs. Daily Trainer Maximum cushioning. Ideal for high mileage and daily use. 5 Lucky players will be selected randomly by computerised Jackpot System daily to enter X MAS LUCKY PICK to win NO minimum bet required NO specific machine to play The more frequent you play, the higher chance you will be selected! Powered by the wind, one must conquer and acquire skills needed to handle one boat well, such as psycho-motor skills, judgmental skills and knowledge of the boat. If you enjoy sports that test not just your physical ability but also your intelligence, sailing is perfect. Stand Up Paddling (SUP) Stand Up Paddling is a very literal name for the very obvious sport; you stand up on a board, and paddle. However there are very good reasons for its rise to popularity around the world; it is a great full body workout that takes you places, from shallower waters where you can get closer to nature or on the waves when you become an expert. The low impact activity is a good cross training option as it helps to improve aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility by engaging your core and challenging your balance. It is also suitable for all ages, making it a family-friendly activity. Whether you are a canoeist / kayak enthusiast or simply just an outdoorsy individual out to try something new, SUP will satisfy you. Kayaking You cannot go wrong with kayaking for a relaxing day on water. Whether you are part of a group or out alone, there are few things better than a tranquil time out on the water; think of it as taking a walk, but on the sea. However, kayaking can also be a good workout, as you are only as fast as how hard you paddle. This activity is suited for children and adults of all ages, and you do not need to be an experienced paddler to enjoy the amazing outdoors. Even beginners who are new to the sport can enjoy a well-deserved break. Book a kayak today and you will find that your family will remember this trip as one of their favourite family outdoor adventures. Constant Wind conducts PPCDL lessons to equip you for the MPA Theory and Practical test. This will be an entry to the boating world of sport. Charter boats are available for rental to practice for the test, and inexperienced newbies with new licences can engage experienced guided drivers to explore around Singapore waters. Equipment Rental Rates Windsurfing As its name suggests, windsurfing is something like windpowered surfing; a sail is attached to the windsurfing board, and the wind propels the windsurfer to speed through the waves. While similar to sailing, the lighter weight of the equipment allows the windsurfer to perform stunts like jumps, inverted loops, spinning manoeuvres, and other "freestyle" moves that cannot be matched by any sailboat. Constant Wind s experienced racing windsurfing coaches conduct beginner, intermediate and racing lessons; they also have equipment for sales and rental. For a sport that combines thrills and skills, windsurfing is definitely one sport to try!
