M AY 2 0 1 7 T H E P R E S E R V E PA G E 4 Kellyann Smith RIVERCREST FOOD & BEVERAGE MANAGER CLUBHOUSE UPDATE On behalf of the entire Clubhouse staff, let me tell you how excited we are that spring has arrived and the Clubhouse is again bustling with activity. I d like to take this opportunity to offer a sneak peek into some of the fun evenings and fantastic programs we ve got in store for you this season. C L U B H O U S E I N S T A G R A M P I C O F T H E M O N T H Friday Night Happy Hours Last year, we were very pleased with both the feedback and attendance of our Friday Night Happy Hours. These casual events are geared toward experiencing new food and drinks while socializing with your fellow members. The Firepit has been dusted off and the kick off for the patio season begins this Friday with our Cinco de Mayo Happy Hour featuring Blackened Fish Tacos, Short Rib Nachos plus our signature margaritas and Sangria. In addition, all flatbreads are $5 on Fridays during happy hour! Keep your eyes on the calendar for some of our other themed happy hours which include Mussels & Beer, Cuban Cuisine and, of course, the return of Chef Anthony s Famous Burger Bar, featuring our excellent burgers and a diverse array of accoutrements. Craft Beer Dinner We are very pleased to announce our inaugural Craft Beer Dinner scheduled for next week featuring delectable pub fare dishes paired with handpicked beers has been well received. The event sold out within a few days so we are in the process of planning another one later in the season. On the craft beer front, Josh and Ricky, our Bar Manager, have done a nice job with the selection and rotation of our weekly craft beer offerings. They are in tune with what s hot and are having fun bringing in beers weekly to satisfy all our Members who truly enjoy these tasty beers. Sunday at the Crest Night On Sunday May 21st, we will host our first Sunday at the Crest family dining night. Enjoy a great night on the Terrace featuring a buffet for the kids while the parents can order off the menu. To keep the kids occupied, entertainment will include Judy the Clown, a glitter tattoo artist and yard games on the Terrace lawn. We created this evening to offer a relaxed environment for the kids while the adults can enjoy a great meal. Reservations are required and will begin at 4:30pm. So reserve your table on the Terrace by making a reservation online or with Brooke at the host stand. Sunday Brunch I ve been asked by many Members about Sunday Bruch which made me realize that many of you may not be aware that we offer a la carte brunch every Sunday throughout the year. Starting at 11am, a brunch menu is available including all your breakfast favorites as well as many lunch items something for everyone. Also, a $5 bloody mary s bar is included, even more of a reason to stop by! The Clubhouse staff is excited to embark on another great golf season offering rotating craft beers, seasonal cocktails and events for both adults and families. I m always open to ideas, so please let me know if you have a thought on a great event or new offering you think our Membership would enjoy.

M AY 2 0 1 7 T H E P R E S E R V E PA G E 5 RECENT & UPCOMING EVENTS LADIES MEMBER-MEMBER Ladies Member-Member is fast-approaching (Thursday, June 8th), and this year proves to be the year you don t want to miss. For the first time ever, the Ladies event will mirror the same flight and playoff format as the men. The field will be evenly split into flights based on team handicaps (so we encourage ALL skill levels to play), and then compete in the normal better ball, scramble, alternate shot formats. After those 27 holes, the winners in each flight will enter into the playoff, which will be played on holes 16, 17 and 18 in alternate shot format. One or more teams get eliminated after each hole based on aggregate score, hopefully creating a two-team race down the 18th fairway. This playoff format is always a must-see for the men s majors, and we are excited to bring this to ladies golf as well. Register online on the event reservation calendar today! MEMORIAL DAY EVENT HONORING MR. DAN LEJEUNE Saturday, May 27th On Saturday, May 27th the Club will be having a special Memorial Day Saturday Event to honor the life of Mr. Dan Lejeune, the founder of RiverCrest who passed away in February. Dan was born on May 27th, 1941 so he would have celebrated his 76th birthday the day of the tournament. The Professional Staff is creating a unique format called The 41 that we think Dan would have enjoyed. The event will be a four-person scramble with groups starting with a total of 41 clubs amongst themselves (10 per player, 1 person with 11). The clubs that are not selected may not be used during the round. After each hole the foursome will eliminate any 2 clubs from the 41 and those clubs may no longer be used. After 9 holes the group will have eliminated 18 clubs and be left with 23 amongst the foursome. On the back 9 groups may share each other s clubs, but must still eliminate 2 clubs per hole. On the 18th hole the group will have 5 clubs left to use, so hopefully the group has chosen wisely. It might sound confusing, but the Professional Staff will help each group before they begin play. We will have several fun touches during the event to remember Mr. Lejeune by. Groups playing in the event may make starting times beginning May 1st by calling the Professional Staff. Please join us in remembering a great man on the dream that he built, RiverCrest! Senior Opening Day The RiverCrest seniors kicked off their 2017 season with an Old School themed team shamble event on April 19th. The weather was brisk with a 100% chance of knickers. Players had to use older modeled clubs from the early 1900 s as well as 1960 s persimmon woods on certain tee shots. At one point every player had to putt with Sam Snead s infamous side saddle style putting stroke. The team of Terry Fair, David Saunders, Jack Bukowski and Fran Mascaro took the title firing an impressive score of 111 in the 2 best balls of 4 format. Two April Hole in Ones Craig Labarbera, who had an Ace this month. Craig aced the 130 yard par 3, 5th hole using a Pitching Wedge on April 9th. Anna Blasko-Conti made a hole-in-one on April 29th on the 5th hole from the green tees. Many happy members were awaiting her arrival on the terrace! Congrats to both Craig and Anna on their shots! Memorial Day Mixed Golf Join us on Sunday, May 28, for some mixed golf fun. The Memorial Day Mixed Tournament will be a variable better ball of 1 Best ball on Par 5's, 2 Best balls on Par 4's and 3 Best Balls on Par 3's. Each team of will be made up of 2 Men and 2 Ladies. The cost is $20 per player. Sign up for this event today! DEADLINES Senior Qualifying ends on May 31st: Senior Handicap Championship Senior Better Ball Championship Super Senior Handicap Championship.

RIVERCREST DAY MEMBER GUEST SIGNUPS ARE OPEN ONLINE! The first RiverCrest Day One-Day Member Guests is scheduled for Thursday, May 18th. Signups have already begun online and are starting to fill up. The field is limited to 104 players so don t wait too long. This is a fun event for your guest to come out and see the course. A Member may bring either one or three Guests to participate. The format is 2 Best Balls of 4 with a 1:00pm shotgun start and lunch starting at 11:30am. Following golf is a dinner and an awards presentation. You do not want to miss the first RiverCrest Day of the year! JUNIOR LEAGUE READY TO RUMBLE The RiverCrest Junior League will be back at it this month as they begin preparation for the summer season. Our Club League will consist of about 40 juniors ages ranging from 7 to 16 years old split up onto two teams. We will also have two PGA Junior League Travel teams of 12 juniors each playing against some of the local golf clubs, such as Spring Ford, Spring Hollow and Indian Valley. Look for our brightly-colored young guns walking around the premises this summer and cheer them on! GAP MATCH SEASON IS HERE! The final week of April has brought about the beginning of Men s and Women s GAP matches. If you are not familiar, this is an interclub league where many Philadelphia Section golf clubs and golf courses play against each other in individual and/or better ball matches. The three Men s teams of RiverCrest will compete in divisions A, C and E for 2017 with three matches each, while the three Women s teams are competing in Cups 10, 18 and 21 with five matches each. The top two Men s teams began with a couple of tough losses, but team 3 came through with a great victory. The Women opened up with three large victories on day one, and look to continue that dominance as they go through the rest of their divisions. Good luck to all and thank you for representing RiverCrest! Decision 34-3/10 Standards for Rules Committee to Limit the Use of Video By Jamie Komancheck, PGA Head Golf Professional Holy Rules Changes Batman! We didn t see that one coming (well actually we did see it on video, which was the problem!) Last month Colby and I watched the final round of the LPGA ANA Championship. The one where Lexi Thompson got a 4-stroke penalty and lost in a playoff! Universal disbelief followed. The past year has seen a multitude of bizarre scenarios involving the rules of golf. And unfortunately none of them have made the game of golf look good. From Dustin Johnson s ball moving in the US Open, to a few grains of sand moving in the Women s US Open, to an improperly replaced ball on the putting green and incorrect signing of a scorecard, they all seem so insignificant in the scope of the competition. Colby immediately called for a timeout! What did you just say Dad? Insignificant? This coming from a PGA Golf Professional who is supposed to uphold the Rules of the Game? Mommmmmmmm! Dad s lost it! I had to calm Colby down, and tell him besides golf I m also a big sports fan. And in all the other sports you would never see something like this happen, where a person could review video and call in a mistake that was made, either by a player or by an official. How many football, basketball and baseball games have I watched and the announcers and replay video show that an error was made. The game moves on and the outcome stands. Colby chimed in, But Dad, golf is supposed to be held to a higher standard. Players call their own penalties; it s a game of honor and integrity. I told Colby I agreed completely with him, especially the part about players calling their own penalties, and not someone viewing a video somewhere else. To my astonishment, in record speed, golf s governing bodies the USGA and R&A have written a brand new decision that may now be used to alleviate the video scenarios that have recently played out. The new Decision 34-3/10 implements two standards for Rules committees to limit the use of video: 1) when video reveals evidence that could not reasonably be seen with the naked eye, and 2) when players use their reasonable judgment to determine a specific location when applying the Rules. Therefore, as the Rules Committee at RiverCrest, the Professional Staff can refuse to allow video evidence to affect a ruling on the course. Colby laughed, Dad, who s videotaping golf at RiverCrest? No one I told him, but the decision also allows the USGA, R&A, PGA and LPGA to follow the same decision in their Championships as well. And that is good for the game of golf!
