Dennis Gilfoyle A Senior Achiever Helping kids Grow By Karl Ohrman Denny Gilfoyle is a giant in the Western Pennsylvania business world. He moves among the area s business elite because of his position as president and CEO of Junior Achievement of Western Pennsylvania, better known as JA. JA has helped so many young people ( me) to understand and appreciate business economics. Many people have an incorrect opinion the business world and JA works hard to change that attitude. Anot is that both of us left home at age 14 to enter the seminary to study for the priesthood. Neither one us made it. JA is the world s oldest and largest youth development organization. The Pittsburgh JA program was the first regional program established 1939. JA empowers young people to own their economic success and has inspired over 2 million children in Western PA in its history. Denny s role as CEO focuses on fund development, board development and branding. He started with JA in 1984 as a Program Manager, worked his way up the ladder to VP of Development in 1995 then left to take the CEO position with JA in Jacksonville, FL for 2 years. He returned to Pittsburgh in 1997 with JA as Executive VP then became President & CEO in 2007. 2

Denny has received numerous national JA leadership and performance awards in his tenure, most recently 5-Star Award recipient in 2013 & 2014, Smart Business Magazine- Pittsburgh s Top 50 Award in 2016, and Baldwin Whitehall School District Champion of Character Award in 2015. Denny has a long Rotary involvement. Because of job changes he has been a member of the Pittsburgh club starting in 1992, Jacksonville club in 1995, Pittsburgh Club in 1998 and finally landing in the St. Clair-Bethel Park Rotary since 2012. Denny has been involved in a number of Rotary projects such as a committeeman for the first Chuck Tanner Awards Dinner held by Pittsburgh Rotary. His current favorite project is the USC-BP annual Chicken BBQ. Denny is a Paul Harris 2. He likes the networking and fellowship in rotary and wishes that more people would see the benefits of rotary and join up. Denny grew up in Crawford County near Conneaut Lake. He graduated from Indiana University of PA in 1981 with a major in fine arts. He met his wife Cindy at a JA conference in Colorado Springs. They have five children (ages 32-18) and three grandchildren with one on the way this July. Denny is an avid sports fan. He has season ticket for the Pirates and Penguins. He enjoys golf with his children, landscaping, and music. He s a part-time church musician for a few Catholic churches in the South Hills. And he claims to be the family pool boy. 3

May, 2017 Greetings Fellow District 7300 Rotarians, Hopefully, you have all been advised by your club officials of your club s status in regard to your annual contribution to The Rotary Foundation. As you know, it is required that every club has a minimum average contribution of $100.00 per person in order to qualify for a District or Global Grant. As we would not want anyone to miss out on the wonderful opportunity of applying for either of these grants, I strongly urge all clubs and their members to participate in this endeavor. In addition, note that another requirement for qualifying for grants is to have at least one member of your club attend a District Grant Seminar. We have had several of these training seminars; but one last chance for this training will be presented at the District Assembly to be held on June 3, 2017 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Green Tree, PA. The District Assembly will start with registration and continental breakfast at 7:30 am and run through 12:30 pm. For any incoming Presidents who have not attended PETS (a requirement of Rotary International) there will be a PETS session immediately following the closing of the District Assembly. So, this will be the last chance to fulfill the requirements and be ready to start the new Rotary year on July 1. Lastly, let s not forget about our Polio eradication efforts. The Rotary Foundation has requested that all clubs make a donation to the Polio Plus effort in the amount of $2,600.00. This amount was determined by RI in honor of the 100 th Anniversary of The Rotary Foundation and its original donation of $26.50. With our annual, polio, and endowment contributions we are aiming for total annual contributions to The Rotary Foundation for the 2016-2017 Year of $1,000,000.00. We can do it let s make District 7300 proud. I am looking forward to seeing you at the District Assembly and, of course, the District Conference. In the meantime, Happy Memorial Day and let s get this summer in gear. Sue, Kelly, PDG District 7300 Foundation Chair 4
