Travel letter 1-2005 Wintering festivities in the River Tiber about our stay in Fiumicino at the Il Girasole yard. As you may assume, we have had a great time with each other and we organised the Christmas dinner on the "office boat" on our yard and all the other hibernators were there. 28 people from 7 different countries made the 4-course dinner. They were so creative and cooked so well that we have had the Christmas diner of our life! Christmas at office boat in il Girasole We had music from a portable radio set, heat from an ancient electric heater, a real plastic Christmas tree with peak and balls as well as paper Christmas table- and wall decorations. We have had a great evening. In the quit parts of the river lived a lot of beaver rats. That sound horrible but as soon as you have seen them with their young ones, they find a soft spot in your heart. That means that all the overdue veggies and bread were shared with the beavers. Usually one approach when you arrive at their favourable spot and as soon as they are aware of the food also the young ones will take something out of your hand, the pictures will show you the whole family and some of the little ones. Feeding the musk rats New Year's Eve we have spent on Zeezwaluw because of a small internal problem what was bothering Riens. He had to be in a range of 5 meters of the head! But the New Year started well and at that time the weather was still good compared with Holland. 1

Rome, Rome and Rome again During the winter period, we have visited Rome at least once a week but often twice. Even now we haven't seen all the specialities of this beautiful town. Palatino Hill where Rome started St Peters Basilica Pantheon Circus Maximus in mystique morning Coliseum Vatican museum inside Of course we have seen the St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican museum, the Sistine Chapel, the high walls of Vatican town, Trevie Fountain, the Coliseum, Circus Maximus and the Palatino hill where Rome started. The "old stone heaps" like Forum Romano the social centre of ancient Rome are very special as well as the other old ruins you will find throughout the whole city of Rome. 2

We have made many long hikes mostly about 10-15 km throughout the city and we are in need not only for new shoes but also for new legs! It is very difficult to describe the many beauties of Rome so we will give you an overview of the most famous ones through our photos. Forum Romano Forum Romano Via Sacra the ancient Stone path St Peters Basilica Pieta in St Peters Basilica San Giovanni in Laterano We were and still are amazed by the beauty and quantity of the churches. Not dare to talk about the enormous wealth inside the most famous ones. We were told there are over 300 churches! Trevie Fountain We assume the churches became so wealthy due to lots of poor old widows given their last coins to the church! We feel sorry for all those robbed poor people! 3

Being in Rome, you have to read the novel "Angels and Demons" of Dan Brown. We did and we checked if Dan did a good job in describing all the special places mentioned. We made an effort and visited all the places and dragged our winter visitors with us! In a special addition we show you through pictures what Dan Brown wrote in his book, click here! Home sweet home Zeezwaluw at Il Girasole So, January was for Rome, 2 weeks in February we have spent in The Netherlands. After 2 years cruising we loved to go home and see the family and some friends. We were lucky because Ryan Air flies from Rome to Eindhoven (NL) for a low price, special for sailors on a budget! We were lucky we could use the camper of our neighbours in Fiumicino, Riet and Berend of "SY Riet", also Dutch sailors. We travelled a lot in the Netherlands from South to North and West to East but we have had a wonderful time with all the loved ones. One night we parked the camper on a camping place and spent the night (-5 C) there. Hooked up to electricity, the heater on, reading a good book and sipping a nice glass of wine it was as cosy as inside Zeezwaluw. We returned home to Fiumicino in quit a storm. The plane had to land on the other airport of Rome than was scheduled. For lots of travellers a pain in the.., but we were very happy about it! After a delay of 3 hours at the airport Eindhoven in Holland we were wondering if we would be able to reach Zeezwaluw by public transport from Scampino Airport. But the airport we were landing at was next to Fiumicino, 10-min ride by taxi! We think we were one of the few happy people in the plane! Planning the sailing season View at the River Tiber March was for preparation; Zeezwaluw and us. We had to transfer her from a "winter houseboat" into a sailing boat again. Also had to make the decision where we were going to in the next cruising year. It wasn't a difficult one this time. We enjoyed Sardinia last year and we only saw the northern part of it. So, back to Sardinia, to Arbatax the East Coast to start with. There we will haul out Zeezwaluw to do some bottom work after 3 years in the water. We consider being on the hard for 2 weeks and after the job is finished and be back into the water again, the real cruising life will start. 4

We plan to sail along the West Coast of Sardinia to Corsica and Elba and then back to mainland Italy. Starting with the coast of Tuscany we will hop along the coast southward again to the Aeolian Islands. Followed by circumnavigate Sicily and back to the heel of the mainland Italy. Than North again along the East Coast the whole way up to Venice! Venice will consume a few days (or more) and when we have had enough of culture Zeezwaluw will precede sailing along the Croatian coast southward again. We don't know how long this voyage will take or if there will be changes in plans during summer. So we can't tell you by now where we will be next winter, but that's cruising life, isn't it? Left already You won't believe it but.. we have already set off from Fiumicino! We left the yard early Thursday morning, March 31, 7 am and Don and Pricilla (a little bit sleepy, but.) were standing at their yard near the bridge to wave us goodbye and wish us a good passage to Sardinia. They will follow in our wake in a few weeks time. Our first sailing trip this year was about 160 nautical miles so we started with an overnight sail in beautiful weather. At the start we had to use the engine but at 2 pm the wind increased and we could sail under full mainsail and big Genoa. The rest of the trip we enjoyed 10-25 kn. of wind from an angle off 30-170 degrees over starboard (NW-NE) that was lovely! During the sailing trip we found our sea legs back and after 32 hours at 3 pm we reached Arbatax marina. To be honest, we were a little bit exhausted after the first sailing trip and very happy to be in the marina. Just before entering the marina the wind increased to NE 5 Bft and the pontoons were downwind. But anyway we were able to more Zeezwaluw without a scratch, and if there is a new one you won't see it because off the already existing ones alongside the pontoon. We are safely moored at the pontoon and picked up and fixed 3 mooring lines at the other side (to keep us off the pontoon) so we are really save now. Wait until hauling out time Friends, that's how the situation is at the moment. After this weekend we will be informed if we can be hauled out on Tuesday or 10 days later. In the first situation we can (have to) start the hard work ourselves. In the second situation we will explore the south coast of Sardinia in the next days. What's left are our best wishes for all of you and say goodbye for now (for some, see you soon) and we will keep in contact by e-mail, text message or phone. To be continued in: Angels and Demons. Riens and Ineke at SY Zeezwaluw /) 5
