THE TSM MONTHLY POST TSM SERVING THE SANTA MONICA BAY AREA SINCE 1955 The Official Team Santa Monica Swim Club e- Newsletter September 20, 2013 Coach s Corner Welcome and welcome back! New season, new opportunities. As we stare down the start of the 2013-2014 season, I like to take a self- appraisal of the last season. Many of our older athletes have gone through a similar exercise as a precursor to setting goals. The things that came out of these m eetings have been very productive especially when the need for change becomes clear. After more than 20 years coaching hundreds of athletes to a national level and beyond, I have noticed some simple but grave triumphs and pitfalls swimmers find themselves facing. Today I want to cover one of the most important: Remember, your coach and coaches want you to be successful. There is not a single decision, direction, or piece of advice that is formulated without first and foremost focusing on helping you get faster when it counts. Our job is to m ake the best swimmers; by best, I mean ultimately the best. Our responsibility is to help you swim to your potential when you are m ost capable of that ultimate level of performance. Age group championships must never be a distraction from developing the skills you will need as a senior level athlete. Many of the fastest age group swimmers have a skill set far short of what s needed for high performance at the senior level. Most of you already know a few age group phenoms who just could not convert high achievement to the open level. Our highest priority as a program is toward your journey to your own personal level of excellence. Stay focused on the process, and remember there s no fast track to success in the pool. Your weekly, monthly, seasonal progression is more important than a particular outcome on a given day. We wouldn t use a stopwatch if times weren t important, but singular races along this journey should not be our primary concern; we re on a rollercoaster together and must expect ups and downs. This is a process! It s hard and it s rewarding. With that in mind, we want your TSM practices to be the focal point for your learning and development as a swimmer. We believe you learn best under the stress of practice conditions alongside your teammates, not in isolation. And we want to keep the message about your improvement clear, simple, and consistent. If you receive different direction about your swimming in another setting, please ask your TSM coach to clarify! We don t want any swimmer frustrated or confused. Do coaches have favorites? Absolutely. Our favorites are those who do most fervently what we ask of them. The desire and effort to get better - even on a bad day - trump any degree of talent or luck. I would also add that we never tire from coaching amazing swimmers: not necessarily international medalists, but young capable people like you with great character and drive. W hether or not you make it to the Olympics, your swimming career will be full of experiences with some of the most amazing people on the planet. Good luck and remember to value every day as it is your last. Eventually, it will be. - Coach Dave Kelsheimer
