BULLETIN th September Summer ANDERSON WINS SUCCESSIVE ENGLAND FTI MVP TITLES Jimmy Anderson has won the title of England s Most Valuable Player for the second successive summer, but the rest of the Rankings suggest a subtle changing of the guard, with youth coming to the fore. Anderson was England s standout bowler this summer. He bowled 9 overs, taking wickets across Tests and ODIs and although this was more overs than last summer, the concern about excessive workload never materialised for the -year-old. The Lancastrian took wickets from seven Tests at an average of.9..% of his overs were maidens. Unlike, when he started with a flurry of wickets but then fell away, Anderson maintained his pace - he took wickets across the last three Tests of the summer, exactly the same number as he took in the first three. Anderson also crafted a career best 8 with the bat at Trent Bridge, helping Joe Root reach in a remarkable new Test record th FTI MVP SUMMER TOP Points Ballance, Gary 8 9 9 Fixtures & FTI MVP Explanation...page wicket partnership of 98. Root scored over a thousand runs across all formats, of which came in Tests. This helped him finish second in the Rankings, ahead of Moeen Ali and Gary Ballance. Moeen, county FTI MVP in, began the summer as something of a part-time spinner and finished it like a spin-wizard, with all the Indian batsmen under his spell. His batting highlight came at Headingley, where his 8- ball vigil against Sri Lanka produced a maiden Test century. Jos Buttler held off James Tredwell to take the ODI FTI MVP. Buttler scored ODI runs, took catches and completed two stumpings, compared to Tredwell s runs, wickets and miserly economy rate of. runs per over. Alex Hales took the t FTI MVP with scores of and against Sri Lanka and India respectively at the impressive overall strike rate of. Hales contributed % of England s runs across the two matches. Unlike other rankings they combine calculations from all domestic competitions and across all aspects of a player s game. However they can also be broken down to focus on individual competitions and specific playing roles. The formula behind the rankings was devised by PCA members, who took into account their own match experiences and the relative achievements of bowlers, batsmen, wicket-keepers and fielders. By combining all those disciplines the FTI MVP Rankings add up to the newest benchmark in the game. The FTI MVP Rankings are powered by data from Opta, the global leader in sports information. They are updated following the conclusion of every game from the county circuit. The FTI MVP concept has now become integrated into the fabric of English cricket. Background During the PCA undertook an extensive review of all player performance data in the game. We found: > Too much focus on individual elements of the game averages, run rates, wickets taken. > A need for more relevance to all aspects of the game. > A need to reflect a player s total contribution to the team. So we set out to devise a system that rewards players who are skilled in multiple disciplines taking wickets, scoring runs, holding catches and effecting run-outs. The Design Challenge During the season the PCA s Cricket Committee including a cross section of players - carried out the following steps: > Conducted an overview of existing player data. > Designed the MVP concept and identified the objectives. > Devised a formula to process a player s contribution to any match. > Logged the scores for the first half of the season, reviewed the data for players and then refined the formula. > Conducted an end-of-season review, focusing on comparing performances. Current and former players from the domestic game and the international arena were involved every step of the way to ensure the end result truly reflected the views of the people in the thick of the action. The Formula The FTI MVP Rankings are based on a cumulative points system that rewards players for every run scored, every wicket taken and every catch held. In simple terms the points gained for batting, bowling, fielding, captaincy and winning across every competition add up to a player s total FTI MVP points. Batting Batting points are based on runs scored plus percentage of a team s total. Bonus points for reaching a century, achieving a benchmark run rate, scoring more than % of a team s runs. Bowling The basis for are points for batsmen s order in the line-up minus economy rate. Bonus points for achieving a benchmark economy rate, taking more than five wickets in an innings, bowling maiden overs. Fielding Points are accumulated for holding catches, effecting run-outs, stumpings. Bonus points for five fielding dismissals in an innings. All members of a winning team receive a bonus, and additional bonus points are awarded to the captain of a winning team.
