Our children are at risk. Please help make streets around our school safer for kids. STOP FOR SAFETY SAM LIVINGSTON SCHOOL TRAFFIC SAFETY TIPS Without patrols, street safety is now up to you.

During pick up and drop off in an average week at Sam Livingston, at least: 75 cars speed 139 cars stop or park illegally 75 people jaywalk 16 cars make illegal turns. TAKE TIME FOR SAFETY Talk to your kids about traffic safety and show them how it s done. SLOW DOWN. CROSS SAFELY. PARK LEGALLY. FOLLOW THE RULES. Build extra time into your schedule so you are not tempted to cut corners where safety is concerned. Walk your kids to school or have them take the bus. Avoid backing up - children are small and unpredictable.

Your child s view of traffic Children have yet to develop the skills they need to be safe in traffic. Until around the age of eight, it is hard for children to tell whether a vehicle is moving, or judge speed and distance. Children believe that if they can see a car, the car s driver can see them. Kids are often too small to see around parked cars, bushes and other obstacles - and it is hard to spot them. Children are not able to tell whether there is enough time to safely cross the road before a vehicle passes, especially as speeds increase. Their field of vision is a third narrower than that of an adult. They cannot anticipate how a car may move in traffic. They are easily distracted, focusing on one thing at a time. Children think cars can stop instantly. Most pedestrian traffic injuries in five to nine year olds happen when crossing in the middle of the block. Ten to 14-year-olds are more likely to be hurt at intersections. Adapted from The Pedestrian Crossing Control Manual for British Columbia and information distributed by the Canadian Institute of Child Health, November 2001. Source: www.shapeab.com

Speeding penalty: $57 and up Passing penalty: $172 and two or more demerits School Parking Lot The parking lot is strictly reserved for staff. No stopping, parking, dropping off or picking up is allowed. Turning into the lot or backing out between school buses is also prohibited. Without patrols, street safety is up to you As of autumn 2010, the safety patrol will no longer be in place at Sam Livingston School. Whether driving or walking, please take care. Teach your child to stop, look and listen when crossing streets or alleys. Cross in a group whenever possible. Children will do as you do - think twice before jaywalking, crossing against the light or between parked cars or buses.

SAM S SAFE STREETS PLEDGE Help protect our kids by making this commitment to traffic safety at Sam Livingston School. When driving or walking children to and from school: We will choose safety over convenience. We will obey all traffic signs and laws. We will always use crosswalks. Even when late, we will model good behavior and not take unsafe shortcuts, make u-turns or let children out in bus zones. We will support recording license plate numbers of those not following posted signs and traffic laws. COURTESY OF SAM LIVINGSTON SCHOOL COUNCIL
