The Tigers earned a win against Edward Waters to start the week before getting swept at Georgia Tech and in a OVC series against Eastern Kentucky. TSU dropped a midweek contest to Middle Tennessee to extend its losing streak to six. Senior Lindsey Burgess was hit by a pitch twice on the week, giving her 28 over her career. The total is good for the top spot on the TSU career list. Joselynn Yates earned two hits against MTSU on Tuesday, collecting multiple hits for the third time this season. The Bon Aqua, Tenn., native opened the season with 31 at bats before registering her first single. Stephens has 13 hits in 72 at bats and is batting.181, but has a.417 slugging percentage. Welcome Back... Seniors Lindsey Burgess and Lauren Dreitlein returned to the Tiger lineup after missing the first weekend of the season. Sophomore Cariona Hassell sat the first two weeks, but has returned to the field putting the Tigers at full force on the field. Junior Courtney Gearlds has missed three games due to injury, but will return for this weekends series. Joselyn Yates returned on Tuesday after missing the weekend series due to illness. Lauren Powell and Whitney Ennis missed the MTSU contest due to illness, but are likely to return on Friday. Senior Taylor Green is the lone Tiger not to see any action in 2016 after having season ending surgery. Making the Grade Tiger Softball accounted for 19 of the 128 student-athletes who were recognized by the Athletic Department for their excellence in the classroom during the fall semester. The 19 was the second highest of the 11 teams at TSU, behind football who placed 43 members. Softball posted a 3.45 team GPA and trailed only Women s golf (3.53) and men s tennis (3.51). To be recognized, the student-athletes had to maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher during the 2015 Fall semester.

Returning Home for A First Redshirt freshman Randi Marshall notched her first collegiate hit against Georgia Tech on Mar. 16. The Jonesboro, Ga., native colected the first hit in her home state. Invitational Honorees TSU placed three members on the All-Tiger Invitational. Lindsey Burgess also earned adidas Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors for her performance during the Invite. Burgess batted.583 (7-for-12) with four runs, a double, the game winning three-run home run in the final game of the invite and five RBI. Lauren Dreitlein scored four runs, hit two doubles, a home run and plated five while batting.417 (5-for-12). Courtney Gearlds earned her second straight All-Tournament team selection by going 6-for-15 (.400) and recording five runs, two doubles, an RBI and three stolens. Classic Performance Courtney Gearlds scored four runs, picked up her second triple of the year, drove in a run, earned three walks, was hit by a pitch, swiped three bases and tallied a.412 On Base Percentage to earn a spot on the All-Tiger Classic team. Freshman Lauren Powell made the squad by tossing 13.1 innings in three appearnces and walked out 1-0 with a 2.62 ERA and held opponents to a.222 average. 2016 Tennessee State Softball Chelsea Buchanan played the 2015 season at TSU with former high school teammate Amber Galyon In 2016 Buchanan will be joined by former East Hickman High School teammates Abi Stephens and Maddy Clark. Opdenbrouw has spent the last four seasons as the Director of Operations for the TSU football program. Prior to his stint with the Tigers, he served as an assistant softball coach for two seasons under Joyce Maudie. During his time as football s director of operations, Opdenbrouw also served as the an assistant softball coach at Ensworth High School and head coach at Nashville Christian School. Opdenbrouw came to TSU after holding the head coach position at perennial NAIA power, Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky. Opdenbrouw left the Blue Raiders after posting over 200 wins. He guided LWC to three consecutive 30-plus win seasons over the last three years. Under his tutelage, the Blue Raiders won two Mid-South Conference Championships in addition to two runner-up finishes. LWC earned three bids to the Regional phase of the NAIA National Championships. Opdenbrouw s commitment to excellence on the field and in the classroom is evident in his coaching of 14 Regional All-Stars, 42 Mid- South Conference All-Stars, 10 Disney Academic All-Americans, and 67 MSC Conference All-Academic team members. Prior to his post with Lindsey Wilson, Opdenbrouw served as an assistant coach for the NCAA III SUNY Utica/ Rome softball team in Utica, N.Y. Opdenbrouw helped the Wildcats set their school record for wins. In addition to his coaching duties, he served as the recruiting coordinator for all women s sports and as the athletic academic coordinator for at-risk students. Opdenbrouw s first collegiate coaching experience was garnered at SUNY Oneonta in Oneonta, NY. He was an assistant for six years as the Red Dragons became one of the NCAA s most successful programs of the 1990 s. They won the NCAA National Statistical Award for double plays turned in a single season in 1994 as well as the school s first ever New York State Collegiate Championship. His passion for the game earned him a coaching position representing the United States in a good will tour against the top teams of Australia in 1996. Prior to college, Opdenbrouw served in the US Army where his performance was highly decorated. His experience includes tours in Desert Shield, Desert Storm, as well as the unification of Germany. Opdenbrouw, originally from Hyde Park, New York, earned a bachelor s degree in elementary education with a speech communication concentration along with a New York state coaching certification from SUNY Oneonta in 1996.
