As the American Football League celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2009, it is appropriate that the league s initial franchise will face the 10th and fi nal team to fl y the AFL banner, the Bengals. Lamar Hunt founded the league, anchored by his Dallas Texans franchise in 59, before moving his team to Kansas City in 63. Meanwhile, Paul Brown s club began play in 68. It s been 25 years since the Chiefs last registered a victory in Cincinnati, a locale Kansas City has visited just three times since Jon Mackovic s squad produced a 27-22 victory at Riverfront Stadium (9/9/84). Coach Todd Haley s squad will be seeking the club s fourth win of 2009. The Chiefs enter the game after suffering a 41-34 loss vs. Cleveland (12/20). Coach Marvin Lewis squad is 9-5 and is in the midst of the AFC playoff picture. Cincinnati has already posted a perfect 6-0 record against its division foes and needs one more victory or a loss by Baltimore (8-6) to clinch the AFC North title. However, the Bengals have lost two in a row and are coming off a last-second 27-24 loss at San Diego (12/20). Cincinnati has suffered a threegame losing streak each of the past three seasons. Cincinnati fi nished the 2008 campaign with three consecutive wins. The Chiefs would to establish their own victory streak in fi nal two games of the 2009 to carry some momentum into the off-season. RB Jamaal Charles has given the club an offensive jolt, scoring at least one TD in each of the last six games. Charles has posted back-to-back 100-yard rushing performances, including a career-high 154 yards vs. Cleveland (12/20). Meanwhile, QB Matt Cassel is also coming off his top performance of 2009 after registering a season-high 331 yards against the Browns. Defensively, KC has forced nine takeaways in its last three games and has allowed a combined 139 net passing yards in its last two contests, the club s lowest passing total in consecutive games since 98. Kansas City closes out the regular season at Denver (1/3), while Cincinnati fi nishes its regular season slate at the N.Y. Jets (1/3). The Bengals won last year s meeting by a 16-6 margin at Cincinnati (12/28/08). Kansas City won a 27-20 decision in the last contest between the two squads at Arrowhead (10/14/07). The Bengals are 2-0 against Kansas City at Paul Brown Stadium, snapping a nine-game Chiefs victory streak to start the 2003 campaign by a 24-19 count (11/16/03). KANSAS CITY VS. The Chiefs and Bengals have split their last nine meetings. Kansas City s most recent victory in Cincinnati was a 27-22 decision at Riverfront Stadium (9/9/84). The home team has won fi ve of the last six meetings in this series. The Chiefs initiated their all-time series against Cincinnati with a pair of contests in 68 when the Bengals entered the AFL as an expansion franchise. The Chiefs registered wins in four of the fi rst five games in the series before Cincinnati proceeded to win fi ve straight contests from 72-77. The two teams have never squared off in the postseason. The Chiefs are 5-6 all-time in Cincinnati. Perhaps the most signifi cant game in the Chiefs-Bengals series came in 69. With starting QB Len Dawson already hurt, back-up QB Jacky Lee was injured vs. the Bengals, pressing third-string QB Mike Livingston into service. Although Kansas City lost 24-19 at Cincinnati (9/28/69), Livingston rallied the club for wins in his next fi ve starts during the Chiefs storied Super Bowl IV season.

A Longhorn Showdown Set in the Ground Game A pair of former University of Texas standouts will be on display on Sunday as Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles and Bengals RB Cedric Benson will be in the spotlight in the ground game. Both players are arguably the key ingredient for both teams offensive recipes. While Benson ranks seventh in the NFL with 1,118 rushing yards, Charles has averaged 101.2 rushing ypg and 184.2 combined net yards (rushing, receiving and returns) over the last six games. In his last six starts, Benson has averaged 97.8 rushing ypg and 104.2 combined net yards. Charles has produced seven TDs over that six-game span, including a 97-yard KO return TD vs. Pittsburgh (11/22), a 76-yard TD run vs. Buffalo (12/13) and a 47-yard TD run vs. Cleveland (12/20). Charles has three 100- yard contests this season, including a career-high 154-yard effort vs. Cleveland (12/20). Charles owns at least one TD in each of those six contests. In the season s fi rst eight games, KC averaged 3.6 yards per carry and didn t register a rushing TD. In the last six games, KC has averaged 4.5 yards per carry and has fi ve rushing TDs. Charles has 18 runs of 10 yards or more this season and has accounted for 28.0% (7 of 25) of KC s touchdowns in 2009. The Bengals are 5-0 this season when Benson registers a 100-yard rushing game. Dating back to 2003, Cincinnati is 27-5 (.844) when the club has a 100- yard back. In Benson s last six starts, he has accumulated 145 carries for 587 yards with two TDs. Thanks to Benson, the Bengals currently rank ninth in the NFL, averaging 131.4 rushing ypg. Benson has been held without a rushing TD in four straight games and was limited to 53 rushing yards in a 27-24 loss at San Diego (12/20). Benson is sixth in the NFL with 27 runs of 10+ yards. The Bengals rank third in rushing defense, allowing 85.2 ypg. Only Pittsburgh (83.1 ypg) and Green Bay (83.6 ypg) are better. Cincinnati is 9-26 (.257) when allowing a 100-yard rusher under Marvin Lewis, but the Bengals have allowed just one 100-yard effort this season, a 121-yard performance by RB Jerome Harrison at Cleveland (10/4). RB JAMAAL CHARLES VS. RB CEDRIC BENSON, LAST SIX GAMES Rushing Totals Rushing Per Game Combined Net Yards Charles 112-607, 5 TDs 18.7 atts, 101.2 yds 143 atts, 1,105 yds, 7 TDs Benson 145-587, 2 TDs 24.2 atts, 97.8 yds 150 atts, 625 yds, 2 TDs Chiefs-Bengals Scoring Stats The Chiefs will face a Cincinnati defense that has permitted just 116 points (14.5 ppg) over the past eight games. Only Baltimore (95-11.2 ppg) has relinquished fewer points over that span. The Bengals rank seventh in the league in terms of actual offensive points allowed (excluding return scores), relinquishing just 230 points (16.4 offensive ppg). The N.Y. Jets (172-12.3 ppg) lead the league in that category. Kansas City has registered two of its three victories on the road this season, but the Chiefs have averaged just 17.2 ppg in their six away contests. Cincinnati has won its last four home games and has held each of those opponents to 13 points or less, permitting just 9.3 ppg in those four wins. The Bengals have permitted 127 points (14.1 ppg) in their nine wins. Cincinnati is 24-4-1 (.845) at home under Marvin Lewis when holding opponents to 21 points or less, including a 5-0 mark in 2009. Putting points on the board early will be a priority against a Cincinnati squad that ranks ninth in the league by outscoring its opponents by a 55-point margin (176 to 121) in the fi rst half. The Bengals typically don t fare well if they fall behind early. Cincinnati has lost 17 of its last 20 games when trailing at halftime. The Chiefs have led at halftime in two of their three victories in 2009. KC s defense has permitted 40 points (13.3 ppg) in those three wins. The Chiefs led by a 24-20 margin vs. Cleveland (12/20), marking the highest fi rst-half point total by KC since registering 24 points vs. Miami (12/21/08). A Pair of USC Passers Square Off in the Air: Cassel vs. Palmer A pair of former USC teammates will be under center on Sunday when Chiefs QB Matt Cassel makes his fi rst career start against the Bengals. Cassel owns a 5-1 record as a starter when he posts a rating of 100.0 or better (min. 20 atts.), including a 27-24 OT win vs. Pittsburgh (11/22) when he threw for 248 yards with two TDs, compiling a season-high 100.4 rating. Cassel threw for a season-high 331 yards vs. Cleveland (12/20), his fourth career 300-yard game and his fi rst as a member of the Chiefs. Cincinnati is 2-25 (.074) when allowing an opposing QB to post a 100.0+ rating (min. 20 atts.) dating back to 2004, including a string of 10 straight losses. Cassel has been especially sharp in the Red Zone, completing 29 of 57 passes for 185 yards with 12 TDs and no INTs, good for a 97.6 Red Zone passer rating. Cassel and Packers QB Aaron Rodgers are tied with an NFL-high nine fourth-quarter TDs. Palmer threw for a season-high 314 yards at San Diego (12/20), snapping a 29-game drought without producing a 300-yard passer. Buffalo (52) owns the NFL s longest active stretch without a 300-yard QB. Over his last eight starts Palmer has completed 63.4% (144 of 227) of his passes for 1,580 yards with 11 TDs and four INTs, numbers that translate into a 92.8 rating. KC s defense has allowed an average of 69.5 net passing yards in its last two games, allowing zero completions of 20+ yards in those contests. The Chiefs are seeking to register an INT in three straight games for the fi rst time this season. Palmer suffered two INTs in a 27-20 loss at Arrowhead (10/14/07). He also tallied 320 yards and two TDs in that contest.

THE LAST TIME Bengals 16, Chiefs 6 December 28, 2008 Paul Brown Stadium 63,984 KANSAS CITY............ 0 0 0 6 6 CINCINNATI.............. 3 10 0 3 16 The Kansas City offensive attack was held to just 220 yards against the Bengals as QB Tyler Thigpen completed 19 of 36 passes for 191 yards and the Chiefs running game produced just 31 yards in a 16-6 loss at Cincinnati to round out the 2008 campaign. The Chiefs got the ball first and QB Tyler Thigpen hit his first two passes, but the drive stalled and P Dustin Colquitt booted the ball away. Cincinnati s first drive picked up three first downs, but the Chiefs defense stiffened and held on a fourth-and-six play when CB Brandon Flowers knocked down a pass from QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to WR Glenn Holt. The next time Cincinnati got the ball, it moved 63 yards on 11 plays with four first downs. Again, the Chiefs defense stopped the march towards the end zone and K Shayne Graham hit a 38-yard FG to give the Bengals a 3-0 lead. The Bengals started a drive early in the second quarter that produced the game s first TD. Fitzpatrick led the Cincinnati offense on a six-play, 87-yard march with five first downs. RB Cedric Benson eventually scored on a two-yard run over right tackle, pushing the Cincinnati lead to 10-0. The Chiefs offense couldn t get anything going in the second period, as they had the ball three times and twice went three and out. Cincinnati got the ball back and Fitzpatrick moved his group 81 yards on 16 plays, picking up five first downs. Facing first-and-goal at the 10-yard line, the Chiefs defense held the Bengals to a two-yard loss on three plays. Graham kicked a 30-yard FG and the Bengals held a 13-0 halftime lead. After the teams traded three punts to begin the second half, the Chiefs moved into Cincinnati territory for the first time. They ended up turning the ball over on downs, when a Thigpen throw to Darling fell incomplete. The Bengals added three more points in the fourth quarter, set up by a fumbled exchange between Thigpen and RB Jamaal Charles. Graham turned the turnover into a 43-yard FG to put the Bengals ahead 16-0. The Chiefs offense turned around and finally got something going, moving the ball down the field and picking up six first downs along the way. Head coach Herm Edwards challenged a ruling on the field that put WR Dwayne Bowe out of bounds short of the goal line, but the play was upheld, setting the Chiefs up with firstand-goal at the one with 4:00 remaining. A TD pass from Thigpen to Bowe on fourth-and-goal from the one was then nullified by an offensive pass interference call against Bowe. The Chiefs were given new life on fourth-and-goal from the 10 when the Bengals were flagged for defensive pass interference against TE Tony Gonzalez. On second-and-goal from the five, Gonzalez then hauled in a TD from Thigpen to make the count 16-6 in favor of the Bengals. Thigpen s two-point pass attempt fell incomplete. The Bengals recovered Kansas City s ensuring onside kick. Cincinnati then gained two first downs and was able to run out the clock for the Bengals third consecutive victory. CIN Graham, 38-yard field goal (11-63, 5:53). CIN Benson, 2-yard run (Graham kick) (6-87, 3:39). CIN Graham, 30-yard field goal (16-81, 7:46). CIN Graham, 43-yard field goal (4-9, 1:52). THE LAST GAME Browns 41, Chiefs 34 December 20, 2009 Arrowhead Stadium 53,315 CLEVELAND............. 10 10 7 14 41 KANSAS CITY............. 3 21 0 10 34 In a game filled with big plays and drastic momentum swings, Cleveland ultimately prevailed by a 41-34 margin thanks to two kickoff return TDs by WR Josh Cribbs and a franchise-record 286 rushing yards by RB Jerome Harrison, who scored three TDs. QB Matt Cassel led the Chiefs on an eight-play, 58-yard TD drive to tie the game at 34-34 with 2:20 left to play, connecting on a 12-yard TD pass to WR Mark Bradley on fourth and six. Cleveland answered as Harrison broke off a 28-yard TD run to give the Browns a 41-34 lead with 0:44 left in the contest. Cassel finished the game with a season-high 331 passing yards and led the Chiefs to Cleveland s 26-yard line before his final pass attempt fell incomplete. After Cleveland opened the contest with a 12-play, 46-yard scoring drive that culminated with a 47-yard FG by K Phil Dawson, Kansas City was driving before RB Tim Castille lost a fumble. But the Chiefs defense returned the favor as CB Brandon Carr grabbed an errant QB Brady Quinn pass and returned it 31 yards to the Cleveland 49-yard line. Kansas City would be forced to settle for a 30-yard K Ryan Succop FG to tie the game at 3-3. Cribbs took the ensuing kickoff back for a 100-yard TD, pushing the Browns back into the lead, making the score 10-3 with 3:56 left in the first quarter. After a Chiefs punt, the Browns tacked on a 30-yard Dawson FG increasing Cleveland s lead to 13-3 with 12:32 left in the opening half. The Chiefs would answer with a nine-yard TD pass from Cassel to WR Chris Chambers, trimming the Browns lead to 13-10 with 10:04 left in the first half. After a Cleveland punt, Cassel hit TE Brad Cottam for 24 yards. Three plays later, RB Jamaal Charles broke loose for a 47-yard TD run, giving the Chiefs the 17-13 lead with 4:10 left in the first half. Charles would finish the day with a career-high 154 rushing yards. The Browns next possession stalled and an errant punt snap was recovered by LB Andy Studebaker in the end zone, giving the Chiefs a 24-13 lead with 2:44 left before intermission. But Cleveland would regain the momentum almost immediatley as Cribbs returned the ensuing kickoff for a 103-yard TD, cutting the Chiefs advantage to 24-20. After Kansas City was forced to punt on its opening possession of the second half, Harrison broke off a 71-yard TD run to give the Browns a 27-24 advantage. CB Brandon Flowers registered an INT to halt another Browns scoring drive, but the Chiefs failed to capitalize. Early in the fourth quarter, Harrison extended the Browns lead with an eight-yard TD run making it 34-24 with 12:09 left to play. The Chiefs added a 27-yard Succop FG, narrowing the Cleveland margin to 34-27 with 8:08 left in the game. After Dawson s subsequent 52-yard FG attempt came up short, the Chiefs took the ball on their own 42-yard line with 4:26 remaining. Cassel then orchestrated a game-tying drive as his 12-yard TD to Bradley made the count 34-34. Harrison put the final dagger into the Chiefs with his 28-yard TD run with 0:44 left to play. Cassel attempted to put together one final drive for the Chiefs, but there wasn t enough time as the Browns left Arrowhead with a 41-34 victory.
