The Working Lines... The Big Investment Part 2 Many of the sires that have a lasting influence on the industry will have long and productive careers as sires. Zippo Pine Bar is the all time leading sire of Register of Merit show horses. He is the sire of over 1585 foals with 656 ROM to his credit. Zippo Pine Bar is 28 years old, but will have an influence on the modern Quarter Horse for many years to come. The legendary sire of speed Domino sired only 20 foals and yet his blood flows through the veins of thousands of Quarter Horses. He died at the age of six. He sired 8 stakes winners from the 20 foals, which is 42% stakes winners from foals. Many race sires PHOTO BY PAMELA SNOW...what a bright future this sire had before his untimely death in 1986 at the age of six. are happy siring 10% stakes winners from foals produced. Domino was foaled in 1891. Commando by Domino is another example of a stallion having a limited sire record. Commando died after siring only 25 foals at the age of eight. Commando sired ten stakes winners, which is 40% stakes winners from foals. Commando was foaled in 1898. The blood of Domino and Commando can be seen in such famous Quarter Horse sires as Leo, Three Bars and Top Deck. So through these great stallions the blood of Domino and Commando has had a lasting influence on the modern Quarter Horse, despite their limited careers is sires. The Big Investment has an average of 56 points per performer. By Larry Thornton This month s Working Lines is going to take a closer look at the sire record of The Big Investment. Last month we saw that The Big Investment brought a new style to the modern pleasure horse. A style that was based on this wonderful conformation. This month we will look at what a bright future this sire had before his untimely death in 1986 at the age of six. Then we will look at one of the reasons why the influence of The Big Investment may continue through his offspring. The Big Investment sired only 129 foals with 93 of them being born in his 1986 and 1987 foal crops. He sired 74 AQHA performers with 66 point earners that have earned 63ROMs and 27 Superior Awards. This gives him an average of 89% point earners/ performers. This gives him 48.8% ROM from foals produced. He has an average of 56 points per performer. Here is an interesting side note on The Big Investment s sire record. The McWhirters have retained 20 daughters or 15% of The Big Investment s foals as broodmares. Most of these mares have not been shown. During our interview, Steve Heckaman had this to say about The Big Investment s sire record, Had The Big Investment lived to be the same age as Zippo Pine Bar, he may have rewritten the record books. The 1990 AII American Quarter Horse Congress Three Year Old Snaffle Bit Futurity will put H e c k a m a n s s t a t e m e n t i n t o perspective. The Invester and his son The Big Investment accounted for 6 of the top 10 finishers. Investment Asset was third; Principle Investment was sixth; Investment Creditor was eighth and Vested Glory was tenth. These four horses were sired by The Big Investment. Impulsions was first in this class with Investor Cluso finishing ninth, both sired by The Invester. PAGE 36 SOUTHERN HORSEMAN FEBRUARY 1997

Prepotency is the ability of a stallion or mare to make their colts uniform in such factors as conformation, color and markings. Investor Cluso is a full brother to The Big Investment. We learned last month that one of the factors that made the decision to buy The Big Investment easy was his ability to mark his colts. Carol McWhirter described it this way, We were confident because we could see from the beginning he was prepotent. His colts all looked alike, real pretty headed, real pretty over the back, real pretty in the front legs. A little bit upright in the pasterns, but beautiful in their tailset. They looked like cookie cutters, all standup pretty colts in the same mold. Prepotency is the ability of a stallion or mare to make their colts uniform in such factors as conformation, color and markings. Prepotency is at its best when the stallion or mare can produce this uniformity when crossed on a variety of bloodlines. The Big Investment s Superior performers give us an interesting view of this sire s ability to get foals from a variety of bloodlines. The leading point earner was Hesa Cute Investor. This good show gelding has earned Superiors in Amateur Hunt Seat Equitation, Amateur Hunter Under S a d d l e, Y o u t h H a l t e r a n d Showmanship to go along with his 783 AQHA performance points. He was an AQHYA Reserve World Champion in Hunt Seat Equitation and an AQHA Champion in the open and amateur divisions. The dam of Hesa Cute Investment was A Cute Copy. A Cute Copy came from the Leo sire line. Her sire was Old Copy Cat by Old Tom Cat by Robin Reed by Leo. This mare was actually 4 x 4 Iinebred to Leo. This made Hesa Cute Investment 5 x 5 x 5 linebred to Leo. Investment Ms was another Superior Pleasure Horse whose dam came from the Leo sire line. Her dam was Leo King Babe by Leo King by Leo. This made Investment Ms 5 x 3 Iinebred to Leo. lnvestment Ms is the dam of the young colt sired by The Invester that the McWhirters are retaining as a replacement for The Invester. Principle Investment was out of Tiger Serena by Tiger Leo. Principle Investment was a Superior Performer as well as the leading money winning NSBA pleasure horse in 1989. Tiger Serena was by Tiger Leo by Leo. This makes Principle Investment 5 x 3 linebred to Leo. Investment Style was an NSBA money winning full sister to Principle Investment. She also earned 19 AQHA performance points with a ROM in the youth division. Secured Investment was an AQHA Secured Investment, 1986 chestnut gelding by The Big Investment shown by Jody Gaylean, placed 4th in the Congress two-year-old Pleasure Futurity. Superior Pleasure Horse. This horse was out of Sugar Walton by Sugar Bars by Three This makes Secured Investment 4 x 3 Iinebred to Three The dam of Sugar Walton was Bar Y Bonita by Silver Cash by Spot Cash. The dam of Silver Cash was Sassy Nick by Nick W. This gives Secured Investment Wiescamp breeding on both sides of the pedigree. Love To Invest was Superior in Western Pleasure. This horse was out of Scoots Reflection by Impresser by Impressive. Impressive was Iinebred to Three The dam of Scoots Reflection was Miss Bar Scoot by Bar Scoot by Royal Bar by Three Love To Invest, 1987 bay mare by The Big Investment with owners Berleen and Barry Pashby winning the three-year-old Pleasure Futurity Championship at the California Congress. This makes Love To Invest 4 x 5 x 6 x 7 x 5 linefeed to Three Investment Creditor s full brother was The Big Asset. This show gelding was Superior in Youth Western Pleasure. King s Bambi was the dam of The Big Asset and Investment Creditor. Her sire was Sonnys Dyn O Mite by Sonny Dee Bar. Sonny Dee Bar was sired by Win Or Lose by Mr Bar None by Three This makes The Big Asset and Investment Creditor 4 x 6 Iinebred to Three King s Trinket was the dam of King s Bambi. King s Trinket was an own daughter of King P-234. The dam of King s Trinket was Flying Diamond, who was out of Miss Hankins by King P-234. This makes King s Trinket 1 x 3 inbred to King P-234. Gilt Edged Lady was a Superior Halter Mare. Her dam was Butler s Tona Reed by Good Booger Bar. Good Booger Bar was sired by Hunt s Good Bar by Good Bars by Three The dam of Good Booger Bar was Sugar Booger Bar by Sue s Sugar Bar by Sugar Bars by Three This makes Gilt Edged Lady 4 x 5 x 6 Iinebred to Three Investment Venture was Superior in Amateur Hunter Under Saddle and Amateur Western Pleasure. His dam was Eternal Nellie by Eternal Sun. Eternal Sun was sired by Eternal War (TB) and out of Sierra Glitter by Silver King. The dam of Eternal Nellie was Poco s Willa by Poco Pine. The dam of Poco s Willa was Margie Leo by McCue Leo by Leo De May by Leo. This makes Investment Venture 5 x 6 Iinebred to Leo. Investment Asset was a Superior performer that was out of Miss Rebel Rita by Top Rebel. Top Rebel was sired by Rebel Cause by Top Deck. PAGE 37 SOUTHERN HORSEMAN FEBRUARY 1997

The six foals that come from this cross (by The Big Investment and out of Zippo Pine Bar s mares) have an average of 53 points/performer. The dam of Miss Rebel Rita was Rita s Orphan by Poco Baron, a grandson of Poco Bueno. Rita s Orphan was put of Miss Leo Rita by Leo Tom by Leo. This makes Investment Asset 5 x 5 Iinebred to Leo. Vested Glory is Superior in Amateur and Open Western Pleasure. She is out of Jag s Velvet Ann by Mr Jag by Jaguar by Custus Rastus (TB). The dam of Mr Jag was Leo Liz by Leo. The dam of Jag s Velvet Ann was Quincy Ann by Cuellar by King P-234. Quincy Ann was out of Leo Ann by Leo. This makes Jag s Velvet Ann 3 x 3 Iinebred to Leo and Vested Glory 5 x 4 x 4 linebred to Leo. As we review these Superior performers sired by The Big Investment, we see that the most common name in the pedigree is Leo. Leo appears Leo appears on both sides of the pedigree in some form in 6 of the horses discussed. But we don t see any specific broodmare sires dominating the matings until we get to the Superior performers Investors Skippy and Investors Maiden. Both of these horses are out of mares sired by Zippo Pine Bar. Investors Maiden earned a total of 112 points and Superiors in Youth Western Pleasure and Open Western Pleasure. She was out of Sura Shady Maiden by Zippo Pine Bar. Investors Skippy earned 62.5 points and a Superior Western Pleasure. She was out of Zippos Skippy by Zippo Pine Bar. The success of these two show horses in reinforced by four more foals by The Big Investment and out of Zippo Pine Bar s mares. They are Investors Jack with 15 AQHA points, Investors Zipper with 78.5 points, Invest Ina Legend with 27 AQHA points and Zippos Lost Desire with 25 AQHA points. The six foals that come from this cross have an average of 53 points/performer. The success of The Big Investment cross on Zippo Pine Bar was profiled in two stories related to me by two different people. Carol McWhirter and Steve Heckaman related similar stories on the quality that seems to come out in The Big Investment/Zippo Pine Bar cross. Both stories begin with Zippo Pine Bar s former owner Norman Reynolds. Reynolds was one of the first breeders to send mares to The Big Investment. They were daughters of Zippo Pine Bar. Carol McWhirter told me that Darrel Saul s involvement with The Big Investment began with his annual visit to Norman Reynolds place to buy pleasure prospects by Zippo Pine Bar. Saul owned and showed the great pleasure horse Mr Zippo Pine. It was Saul s practice to buy a large number of Zippo Pine Bar foals each year. On one of his trips, Saul saw several foals by The Big Investment that were out of Zippo Pine Bar mares. Saul apparently liked what he saw and he went to the McWhirters to see The Big Investment. He then bought into The Big Investment Syndicate. Steve Heckaman made a similar trip to Nebraska to look at Zippo Pine Bar colts with one of his customers, Bob Perry. Heckaman told the story this way, When Bob Perry bought Zippo Pine Bar, I went with him to Norman Reynolds to pick out some colts by Zippo that he could take to his ranch. Heckaman continued, Norman ran a pen of stud colts in. These was one colt that just stood out beyond the rest in conformation and movement. I picked that colt out and asked Norman what he was, and he said, You don t want him, he s by The Big Investment and out of a Zippo mare. So he ran a pen of fillies up, added Heckaman, and I picked a filly and the filly struck me the same way the stud colt did and Norman said, You don t want that one, she s by The Big Investment and out of a Zippo mare. The success of Zippo Pine Bar over the years is a very fine story in its own. Let s take a closer look at this stallion s career. Zippo Pine Bar came out of Nebraska to become the all time leading sire of ROM show horses. He is the AQHA s perennial leading sire, indicating the true quality this stallion has produced over the years. In addition to his 656 ROM show horses, he is the sire of 214 Superior Awards winners and 11 World Champions. His foals have won in excess of $567,000 in Incentive Fund money and they have earned in excess of $1,000,000 in NSBA earnings. Zippo Pine Bar brings together the blood of Three Bars, Leo, King and Joe Moore in his pedigree. His sire was the NSBA Hall of Fame stallion Zippo Pat Bars by Three Bars and his dam was Leo Pat by Leo. Dollie Pine was the dam of Zippo Pine Bar. This great mare was an AQHA Champion and an outstanding producer. She was the dam of 14 foals with five ROM and our AQHA Champions. Her AQHA Champions were Scarborough Fair, Pat Dollie Pine, Two Eyed Dollie and of course Zippo Pine Bar. Dollie Pine was sired by Poco Pine, the second leading sire of AQHA Champions and a very successful sire. Poco Pine was sired by Poco Bueno and he was out of Pretty Rosalie, dam of three AQHA Champions. Her sire was Pretty Boy by Dodger. The dam of Dollie Pine was Hobo Sue. Hobo Sue was sired by Hobo and out of Home Gal by Mr Pardner. Hobo was sired by Joe Moore. Hobo Sue was the dam of 13 foals with four AQHA Champions. Her foals include Dollie Pine s full brothers Pine Bo, AQHA Amateur Superhorse and Mister Big Pine, an AQHA Superior performer in Open Western Pleasure, Youth Western Pleasure and Youth Horsemanship. As we can see, the pedigree of Zippo Pine Bar gives him the credentials to be a great sire. Zippo Pine Bar has proven to be a good sire with a variety of bloodlines. His foals include Mr Zippo Pine, Zippos Mr Goodbar, Zippo Cash Bar, Zippo s Shasta, Zippos Social Bar, Melody Zipper, Zips Chocolate Chip and Zippos Heaven Sent. Mr Zippo Pine and Zippos Mr Goodbar are full brothers out of Tamara Wess, a daughter of Blondy s Dude, a grandson of King P-234. Mr Zippo Pine has earned over $200,000 in western pleasure and Zippos Mr Goodbar is the earner of more than $50,000. Zippo Cash Bar was out of Wiescamp bred mare. She was sired PAGE 38 SOUTHERN HORSEMAN FEBRUARY 1997

Zippo Pine Bar brings together the blood of Three Bars, Leo, King and Joe Moore in his pedigree. by Dollars Cash and out of Nick s Busy Bee by Nick W. Zippos Cash Bar was a Superior Halter Horse and an AQHA Champion. Zippo s Shasta was a Superior Halter Horse as well. Her dam was Social Shasta by Social Reward and she was out of Skip Shasta by Skipper s King. The dam of Skip Shasta was Shasta by Buck H by Nick. Zippos Social Bar was another Superior Western Pleasure Horse. His dam was Social Kitty by Social Reward and she was out of Kitty Bar by Seven Social Reward by Skipper W. Social Reward was out of Sock Bar by Bar Mount. More of that Wiescamp breeding. Melody Zipper was one of the all time great show horses. His greatest title was the AQHA Amateur Superhorse title in 1983. He was also a two-time Amateur All Around Champion with about six Amateur High Point titles to his credit. When we first look at Melody Zipper s dam Jaguar Sue, we see that she is Iinebred to King. But her sire is King Jaguar by Jaguar by Custus Rastus. Zips Chocolate Chip was the 1989 AQHA World Champion Junior Western Pleasure Horse. His dam was Fancy Blue Chip by Custus Jaguar by Jaguar by Custus Rastus. Zippos Heaven Sent was a NSBA High Money winner and a Congress Pleasure Futurity winner. His dam was Heaven Sent by Custus Rastus, the sire of Jaguar. Now that we have seen some of the good crosses for Zippo Pine Bar, let s look at some pedigree factors that may contribute to The Big Investment/ Zippo Pine Bar cross. We will start with The Invester, Zippo Pine Bar and The Country Girl. Last month we saw that The Country Girl was the dam of several very good show horses. Her first foal was The Big Investment by The Invester. The Big Investment has a limited but good show record with his ROM and 11 Invest Ina Legend, 1987 sorrel gelding by The Big Investment (left, shown by Dan McWhirter) winning the Nebraska Breeders Futurity Two-Year-Old Championship. Investment Ms, 1987 sorrel mare by The Big Investment (right, shown by Kevin McDavitt) in the same class, won the Reserve Championship. western pleasure points. Then she was the dam of The Country Bar by Zippo Pine Bar. The Country Bar earned 113.5 AQHA performance points. The next foal we will look at out of The Country Girl is Investors Cluso. Investors Cluso is a Superior Western Pleasure Horse with 55 open points. His sire was The Invester. The last performer out of The Country Girl will be Zip To The Country with a limited show record of 2 western pleasure points. He was sired by Zippo Pine Bar. The Country Girl s produce record indicates that this mare was a good cross on Zippo Pat Bar s greatest sons, Zippo Pine Bar and The Invester. The Country Girl was sired by Lad s Zero by Lad s Image. The sire of Lad s Image was Skipper s Lad. The dam of Lad s Image was Shasta Star by Bar Mount and her dam was Shasta Nick by Nick W. The dam of The Country Girl was Jodie Durant by Skip Beware by Skipper s King by Skipper W. The dam of Skip Beware was Shawnee Maid by Shawnee Shiek by Nick W and her dam was H J Skipagain by Skipper W. Several of the horses sired by Zippo Pine Bar were out of mares that carried the blood of Hank Wiescamp s breeding program. They included Zippo s Cash Bar, Zippo s Shasta and Zippo s Social Bar. Zippo s Shasta was out of Social Shasta by Social Reward. The dam of Social Shasta was Skip Shasta by Skipper s King and Skip s Shasta was out of Shasta. The sire of The Country Girl was Lad s Zero by Lad s Image by Skipper s Lad. Lad s Image is out of Shasta Star, who was out of Shasta Nick. Shasta Nick was out of Shasta, the dam of Skip Shasta, the dam of Social Shasta. Zippo s Social Bar was out of Social Kitty. Social Kitty was sired by Social Reward by Skip s Reward by Skipper W. Zippo s Social Bar was a full sibling to Zippos Skippy. Zippos Skippy was the dam of Investors Skippy, by The Big Investment. Investors Skippy was a Superior Pleasure Horse. Three horses that gave Zippo Pine Bar a lot of notoriety as a sire were Zips Chocolate Chip, Zippos Heaven Sent and Melody Zipper. These three show the ability of Zippo Pine Bar to cross with the blood of Custus Rastus. PAGE 39 SOUTHERN HORSEMAN FEBRUARY 1997

Vested Glory by The Big Investment was a great show mare, earning her Superior in open and amateur western pleasure. This mare is out of Jag s Velvet Ann by Mr Jag by Jaguar by Custus Rastus. We saw that The Country Girl has the ability to cross with both The Invester and Zippo Pine Bar. This brings the discussion to crossing these two fine stallions which constitutes inbreeding to Zippo Pat Inbreeding to a great horse can be both rewarding and troublesome to the breeder. The breeder always hopes for the best. One of the best out of The Invester/Zippo Pine Bar cross would be Vested Pine. This consistent pleasure horse was the Champion of the 1996 AII American Quarter Horse Congress Limited Open Maturity. Vested Pine is sired by The Invester and out of Zippos Bay Lady by Zippo Pine Bar. This makes Vested Pine 2 x 3 inbred to Zippo Pat The six Big Investment/Zippo Pine Bar crosses we discussed earlier are all 3 x 3 Iinebred to Zippo Pat This is a common linebreeding pattern. The horses that carry this pattern are Investors Zipper, Investors Maiden, Investors Skippy, Zippos Lost Desire, Investors Jack and Invest lna Legend. The definition of Linebreeding makes the influence of Zippo Pat Bar on this c ross an i nteres ting f a vor. Linebreeding is the breeding system used to keep a high relationship to some outstanding common ancestor. In this case, the outstanding ancestor is Zippo Pat Our discussion of Zippo Pine Bar s foals started with the full brothers Mr Zippo Pine and Zippos Mr Goodbar. The dam of these two were Tamara Wess, by Blondy s Dude. When Zippos Mr Goodbar was crossed on Gold Seal Investment by The Big Investment, they got the good looking stallion Good Terms. Good Terms won over $12,700 as a three year old in Western Pleasure. Good Terms is 3 x 4 linebred to Zippo Pat The crossing of a son of Zippo Pine Bar on a daughter of The Big Investment gives us an indication that The Big Investment/Zippo Pine Bar cross has a future. Here are some more examples of this cross having an ongoing place in the pleasure industry. Good Obsession, 1994 sorrel mare, by Good Asset out of The Big Obsession by The Big Investment, shown by Patricia Woodrick placed 8th in the 1996 World Championship Show Two- Year-Old Pleasure Class. The Big Investment colts that Steve Heckaman saw at Norman Reynolds place has stuck with him over the years and he has bred his Zippo Pine Bar mares to Principle Investment and now with Potential Investment. His faith in this cross is indicated by the Principle Investments listed below. Principle Investment is an up and coming son of The Big Investment and several of his foals indicate his success with Zippo Pine Bar mares. These foals include Principle N Interest, Unprincipled, The Principle Zip, Principle Player and Principle Payment. AII of these show horses are out of mares by Zippo Pine Bar except Principle Payment, who is out of a granddaughter of Zippo Pine Bar. Investment Asset is proving to be a good siring son of The Big Investment. His foals include Esteemed Investment and These Eyes Adore You. Both are out of Zippo Pine Bar mares. Esteemed Investment is out of Zippos Tammy Te, a 3/4 sister to Zippos Mr Goodbar. AII of the Principle lnvestment/ lnvestment Asset foals listed above were World Show entrants in 1996. They show a linebreeding pattern to Zippo Pat Bars of 4 x 3 or 4 x 4. Good Subsidy was sired by Good Asset, the McWhirters son of Zippos Mr Goodbar. Good Subsidy is out of Investment Subsidy by The Big Investment, Good Subsidy was a 1995 Congress Limited Open Two Year Old Futurity Finalist. Good Subsidy is 4 x 4 Iinebred to Zippo Pat Good Obsession was in the 1996 World Show Two Year Old Western Pleasure Class. She is sired by Good Asset and out of The Big Obsession by The Big Investment. The dam of The Big Obsession was Zippos Sandy by Zippo Pine Bar. This gives Good Obsession 3 crosses to Zippo Pat Bars with a linebreeding pattern of 4 x 4 x 4. Good Obsession finished eighth at the World Show out of 73 entries. Touched By Asset is sired by Investment Asset and was a Two Year Old Western Pleasure entrant. His dam is The Light Touch by Zippo Jack Bar by Zippo Pine Bar. The dam of Zippo Jack Bar was Fair Eyed Jack, a daughter of Scarborough Fair, a full sister to Zippo Pine Bar. This gives this filly a linebreeding pattern of 4 x 4 x 5 to Zippo Pat Another 2 Year Old Western Pleasure entrant was lnvestment Award. This horse was sired by Zippo A Ward by Zippo Pine Bar. The dam of this horse was Investors Skippy, the Superior Western Pleasure mare we discussed earlier. She was by The Big Investment and out of Zippos Skippy by Zippo Pine Bar, This gives us a 3 x 4 x 4 linebreeding pattern to Zippo Pat Bar. It will probably be a long time before we truly know the full impact of The Big lnvestment on the modern pleasure horse. But this great stallion seems to have the inside track to having a lasting influence. He has set the standard by which the McWhirters have developed their breeding program.
