The Horizon League Champion Oakland women s soccer team (8-5-7, 6-1-2) will face No.3 seed Notre Dame (13-4-1, 6-4-0) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Notre Dame, Ind. at Alumni Stadium. HOW THEY GOT THERE: With the season on the line, Oakland defeated Wright State in overtime 1-0 to claim the Horizon League Championship and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Senior Sarah Reynolds scored the golden goal in the 95th minute off a corner kick from fellow senior Joan Sieja. The win gave the Golden Grizzlies their first Horizon League Championship since joining the league in 2013. TOURNAMENT HISTORY: Oakland will make its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance with the last coming in 2012 when the Golden Grizzlies defeated No.4 Ohio State in penalty kicks in the first round, then dropping their second round match up to Texas A&M. The Golden Grizzlies are 0-6-1 all-time in the tournament. SAURIN S NCAA RESUME: Golden Grizzlies head coach Mags Saurin is making her first NCAA Tournament appearance with Oakland, but is no stranger to the tournament spotlight. As a coach at her Division II alma mater Christian Brothers, her team appeared in the tournament in 2003, making it to the regional round. As a player for the Buccaneers, Saurin won a national title in 2002 and was runner-up in 2001. ALL-LEAGUE SELECTIONS: The Golden Grizzlies landed four players on the all-league teams as Oakland s Joan Sieja and Alice Palmer were named to the All-Horizon League first team, while Emily Zweng and Maria Zandi were selected to the all-freshman team, as voted by the league s head coaches. STARTED FROM THE BOTTOM: In September the Golden Grizzlies found themselves ninth in the league standings and winless in their first nine games. Since, the Golden Grizzlies are unbeaten in their last 11 games, going 8-0-3 and claiming the Horizon League Championship. In that time, they have outscored opponents 15-2 and have recorded seven-consecutive shutouts. A LOOK AT THE FIGHTING IRISH: Despite finishing sixth in the ACC and missing out on the conference tournament, Notre Dame will be making their 23rd straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Irish s four losses all came in league play against No.9 Clemson, No. 1 Florida State, Miami (FL) and No. 15 North Carolina. They are led by a trio of seniors, Anna Maria Gilbertson, Katie Naughton and Cari Roccaro, who all garnered All-ACC Second Team honors, while Natalie Jacobs was named to the league s all-freshman team. Notre Dame has won three national titles, the last coming in 2010. ZWENG EXCELLING: Oakland goalkeeper Emily Zweng has not lost a game in her early career, going 7-0-3. In 12 games, Zweng has made 34 saves allowing just two goals, equaling a save percentage of.944 and a goals against average of 0.17. She was also named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 5 and notched an assist against Valparaiso, becoming the first Oakland goalkeeper to record an assist in the Division I era.
